Sacred Heart Cathedral Varsity Basketball Schedule

Only 1 home game on 12/3 and the next home game a month later on 1/7?
Hoping SHC would host a tourney or schedule more home non-leagues this season.

Either that or drop the first tournament and schedule 4 home games.

SH to my recollection has scheduled this way for the last 5+ years. I think doing out of the area tournaments does more in building team continuity even in losses than scheduling a bunch of AAA or lower tiered PAL teams in the beginning of the season. Very interested in seeing how Coach Mackay implements his style on these kids and if the parents this coming season stay out of the coach's ear.

SHC is obligated to schedule games against AAA or PAL teams if they had their own tournament?

A bunch of away games early in the season usually means administration doesn't want to
Work home games during thanksgiving or Xmas break.

Im excited about Coach Mackay...being a WCAL product and coaching in college etc, he brings a lot of experience. I think those parents that have been vocal will tone it down because this man has all the credentials. Does it mean he will win more than Barbour is another question. Hopefully, he brings instant postitives and unit cohesion because the last couple of years' Barbour was not able to translate his style of defense or philosophy SHC is known for playing on the current group of players. Having said that I have a lot of respect for Barbour. If Mackay turns out like Russell, this will be a blessing for SHC.

It'll be interesting to see how SHC fares this year with Coach Mackay at the helm. Will the remaining kids in the program buy into his system and/or be a good fit for said system. Barbour didn't leave the cupboard completely bare as there is still some talent there to work with for Coach Mackay.

I expect the WCAL to be below average this year as both St Francis and Serra should be way down this year although Logan Johnson is a BEAST and Coach Rapp always coaches them up. Bellarmine, SI and Mitty have a fair amount of returning talent. Predicting the order of finish this year in the WCAL will be a challenge to say the least.

If Logan Johnson can somehow get a not-so-smart NBA GM to fork him over $50M, his family will be set up pretty well. Oh wait, that happened.

With Williams-Sheppard graduating, Hollins, Hillman, and Smith all gone, Coach Mackay will have his work cut out for him. If he can make Carter fulfill his potential that would help the depleted squad immensely. The still have Nathan Robinson and Dunbar returning (maybe some transfers as well). They went from being the most talented team in the league to around the middle of the pack IMO.

Serra will not be "way down" this year as they have more talent returning than people realize, plus Coach Rapp. St. Francis on the other hand...that's who I'd describe as way down. Even with Logan Johnson. St. Ignatius by FAR has the most talent and deepest roster in the league this year.

I hadn't heard about Hillman and Smith transferring. Anyone know where they transferred to? When I made the Serra comment I had discounted their 7' center and I know that James is a good junior but don't know a lot about the other returnees. Lastly, I know better than to ever count out a Coach Rapp led team.

I'm sorry but what's this talent you speak of regarding Carter? You must have seen something the last 3 years that somehow resembles talent.

Ic any interesting freshman at SHC that will be playing basketball?? Rumor had it that some big kid from Stockton came to an SF school.
Andre Kelly 6-7 (2018) from Stockton enrolled at Riordan last Spring, but had a change of heart and went back to Stockton. Apparently, he played very well at the recent NorCal Select Showdown. SI and Bellarmine appear to return the most players. Never underestimate Serra with Coach Rapp at the helm. Mitty returns some talent and won't be surprised if they add a transfer or two.
Riordan has some incoming frosh players with height, but not good enough to crack a varsity spot at this time. Guard play will be the Crusaders strength, but they will be severely vertically-challenged. Looking forward to seeing the Irish as talent remains (tapped or untapped). Why the departure of some of their returning players? Never heard of Coach Mackay, but hear he comes with great credentials.

Always somethin'...

Sean McKay was an assistant at SJCC and graduated from USF, and earlier from St. Francis in 1995, so he knows the league. He was also head coach at San Leandro from 2008-2013.

Hollins I knew left, definitely a loss... Hillman not sure, and Smith was a freshman. Senior Hillman improved a lot last year so if he is gone, I do wonder.. Smith was a project as a freshman with some talent, just my opinion, but I didn't care for his aggressive body language toward other players or reading his lips (profanity) on the court. Maybe, Im old school, but freshman should be seen not heard. Two examples of this, I recall seeing the Mahoney game or the St. Francis game last season. Im sure they will make do with what they have. I am happy that Nate Robinson is still there, he will be the face and attitude of the team as SHC goes forward.

Riordan has an incoming freshman who is about 6'1 who I've heard will most likely play on varsity. There's a skinny 6'6" freshman but he'll probably play for the freshman team. As Jordan states the Crusaders will definitely be vertically challenged but have a lot of good underclass guards including Chun and Ubaja. Their sophomore class is pretty strong but once again guard heavy but they have at least one 6'4" kid (two actually but I've heard that one of the two isn't playing this year).

Jordan you may know more than I but I don't think he enrolled at Riordan. He was also was at SI, Serra and Valley too looking to transfer. He played with Wilson and Santos on his AAU team

Serdaprs, a Riordan parent whose son is in the same class and got to know the family told me. If in fact he took a look at all 4 schools definitely shows he had a change of heart.

I don't know if Hillman transferred...But apparently Smith is attending El Cerrito? I last heard but this is unconfirmed, but he is not at the school.

Valley Christian has added a transfer, 6'8" Jay Allen Tovar. He's only a sophomore but has some nice ability. That's a huge pick up for VC. Can't remember the last time they had an impact big man. Looks like they will be out of the cellar this year.

Mr. Direct, J2, 1DNA, are you guys familiar with Jelani Clark 2019 @ Riordan? Apparently he was at the NorCal Select...Did not see him on any of last year's rosters.

That's because he's an incoming freshman class of 2020 :). My son played against him at the AAU level the past few years and is a friend of his so I know him / his game pretty well. He was the freshman that I alluded to in my earlier post. He played for the Oakland Rebels as well as Oakland Soldiers. Good kid, very athletic and attacks the rim and is one of the faster guys with the basketball that I've seen in his class.

Is this the kid who went to MLK, started at Galileo, transferred to Mission, then transferred to Riordan. Believe a sophomore.

If this is the kid I'm thinking about he started at Francisco MS before transferring to MLK. Riordan would be his 5th school in the last 5 years.

My kid graduated 2 years ago, so I dont have insider knowledge any longer and haven't seen Buck since last season. Regardless, they need something to infuse that program.

Ok. I got 2019 based on a tweet from Class of Hoops mentioning Jelani participating @ the NorCalSelect last week. I also understand a SF Prep Hall of Famer/Riordan Hoops grad's son is also an incoming Crusader frosh?

What year did he play at Riordan? It's always good to see legacy players.

Let's just say Hillman was not invited back. Booted!

So did he do something he wasn't suppose to or maybe grades etc...or is it more of the new style or new regime from the new Coach coming in and just won't fit?

Any insight on how this new team will look? Any Freshman possibly on the team?

I know of at least one incoming SHC freshman who is a very good player - Bryce Monroe. He's a little under 6' but is one of the most competitive, confident and fearless guards that I've seen on the AAU level. Teammate with Jelani Clark (Riordan) on Oakland Rebels AAU teams. I've heard he is playing up on varsity this year or at least that's the plan. He'll fill in nicely for Kamiri Smith if he's moved on.

He did something he wasn't supposed to do. My insight comes from one of the basketball dad's. Dad seemed pretty optimistic about the team. Also mentioned I believe Emmet Neal, a freshman who played jv's last year as a player who is impressive.

He's listed on the frosh football roster. Wears #4.

Bryce is apparently a darn good football player as well - heard he scored three TDs vs Riordan freshman in 20-19 SHC win.

Emmet Neal is looking good as well - I've seen him up close and personal recently working out for his AAU team. He's slasher not a back to the basket big or exclusively 3 point outside shooter so it'll be interesting to see how he's used at the high school level.
