Salesian-O'Dowd

That was a great game... Certainly a nominee for my personal "NorCal Game Of The Year" award.

Exactly one week after my other nominee thus far, the Sheldon-Vanden OT thriller.

thanlfullybthe game was streamed live because I wasn't going to drive to Napa. Both teams were very sloppy and was not really impressed by either team. The 4th quarter and OT were compelling and action packed but most of the game was disappointing. I expected more from 2 open-caliber teams.

Youseechief you're probably right about the quality of the game. I should have said it was exciting down the stretch.

I didnt think the game was that sloppy, i think both teams are just very evenly matched. And both teams get after it on defense. Although I will say NorCal basketball is down from years past for sure. Salesian is good but 5 years ago theres no way they are the #1 team in norcal.

This Salesian team doesn't compare to the 2011-2013 Salesian teams. There were several schools in that time that are better than anyone now

Smooth- Agree. Not nearly the type of teams. Just think how good Mitty was as well.
Salesian had Jabari Bird, Mario Dunn, Freddy Tagliao. There 2011-12 team smoked everybody on the way to an easy win over Price in state champ. They only loss to Montverde Academy I believe. This years Salesian team plays great D but has no size. That will come back to bite them.

I thought the end of the game was fun to watch, but overall was pretty sloppy. The guard for O'Dowd makes the game really hard, he throws constant no look passes to nobody.

Markel Leonard was also a strong guard for them. They did also lose to Blanche Ely.
Do you remember when you got your first look at Freshman Bernard Ward on that team? Swear to god, when he came out for the first time in Gridley, I thought he was the ball boy:)

O'Dowd should have won that game with their size and other mismatches. Salesian's guard play was phenomenal and won it with grit and heart. Both teams got after it defensively the entire game. Definitely more entertaining to watch than Prolific Prep and a bunch of D1 prospects dominating lesser teams without giving any effort at all. I'd pay to watch that O'Dowd/Salesian game before I'd pay to watch PP play again... Just my 2 cents.

Normally I would not comment but everyone see's basketball differently. Some are basketball purists and some are more progressive with their views/opinions on the way the game is evolving. But sometimes what your eyes are seeing and what comes out of your voice does not match. Maybe below will help for those who weren't in attendance

As for the Saturday opponent (which you were referring to), you need to do your homework "damim". Trinity Prep is ranked #5 by Maxpreps for the State of Nevada and an extremely well coached team. We would of rather played the #1 team, but they declined to participate in the event. Trinity Prep has a win recently vs. Westtown, which is the #1 ranked team in PA. That team includes multiple top 5 ESPN Ranked kids in the country (Mohamed Bamba, Cameron Reddish, and Brandon Randolph). Two of those kids are pretty much lock NBA talents. Go ahead and youtube those individuals.

Furthermore, one of the teams we beat by 60 points this weekend, just last month, was tied with Oak Hill Academy with 5 minutes to play in the game (in Kentucky). Variables such as travel, bad chemistry week for the opponent, injuries, play a role in teams winning or losing. In this situation, we probably played the best defensive game of the year and held them to 39 pts. Unfortunately for us, Gary Trent Jr. had his worst shooting night of the season, and Paul Scruggs (Top 25 in country) did not play for us all weekend as well, and we were still able to win comfortably. Coach Billy McKnight needs to get more credit for the amazing job he is doing at Prolific Prep. He is definitely one of the great basketball minds out there and prepares his team at a very high level.

Salesian vs Bishop O'Dowd game was a great battle between two great coaches/players/programs. Next year, we will continue to add local teams with National Caliber teams to increase the exposure and opportunities for players/coaches in the area. Thank you for those that attended.
