SF Chron All Metro BB Team + Regional POY's 4/10/16

Not a big surprise with Serra winning the state Div II title and Killingsworth having 2 big games first against EL Cerrito & then SoCal Poly. Here is the link showing the Mercury News selections for 1rst, 2nd & 3rd team selections for CCS.

Killingsworth well deserved!
Rapp Coach of the year!
Darren Sabedra leaves Eddie Stansberry and Alfred Hollins off 1st, 2nd and 3rd team.
Both 1st team all WCAL selections. Both Will play D1 in college.

The picks were interesting...

Nobody on that first team selection is a Center. He went purely by just stats/scoring? Then there are two C's on 2nd team all league (who might give that 1st team selection a hell of a run with Stapes, Swidler, and Wickliffe.

Hollins being left off doesn't make sense to me.

The SJ Mercury news does not cover the city schools that is why they are not on the list.

Mercury News has always included the SF schools and why the teams are always included in the rankings weekly. One of the SHC girls made the Merc girls all star squad.

Distance definitely doesn't make the heart grow fonder in Darren & Co's case.... I think they should just draw a line at the 92 freeway and only include players south of that line. Will Emery (St Ignatius) not even listed is twice the player of most of those Santa Clara county public school hacks :)..... Not a single player from the AAA or BCL leagues either.

The Merc doesn't cover the AAA or BCL.

Hmmm, calling Mercury News All Star selections "hacks" simply beause they come from publics [guessing poster has never seen most if any of them even play [??]. Homerism is alive & well among SI fans it seems.

FYI among the Merc selections the WCAL was the most well represented league of any in CCS [ie: the "Merc" can't be blamed simply because every WCAL player was not chosen - 5 of the 8 first team WCAL selections were indeed on the Merc's list]. Congrats Will Emery of SI for first team All WCAL selection.

I would almost argue that some of those 2nd team players may have deserved a spot on 1st team all league...

Why would they?

The Merc not covering those leagues makes the point that the list is NOT all inclusive at least when it comes to the AAA and BCL. The exclusion of Emery underscores the Merc's regional bias towards South Bay players which is to be expected given their readership.

My Santa Clara public school hack comment was "kind of" meant tongue in cheek and why I included the smiley emoji. You're right in that I haven't seen any of them play which factors into my admitted bias towards the WCAL and City teams.

SF_Mikey: like I said the Merc selections favored the WCAL with the most players selected of any league in CCS, so not sure how much bias there is on their part. I will concede I think the Merc does give a bit more consideration to south bay publics than those in the mid-peninsula and SF while at same time recognizing the strength of the WCAL schools/schedules.

All is not lost however regarding the exclusion of SI's Will Emery [ie: 1rst team ALL WCAL Selection not selected on any of the SJ Merc's teams].
I am waiting for the SF Chron's "ALL METRO HS Basketball Team" selections which will include the greater bay area including all the leagues east bay & further. This will be "THE" list of the best of the best and to even make honorable mention is noteworthy. The SF Chron ALL METRO selections will tend to be more accurate of the best talent in the bay area and will feature the "cream of the crop" so to speak. Thinking it will be out this weekend.

Hard to believe that DFAL MVP Eddie Ionescu was left off even the honorable mention list while 5 other DFAL players were honored.

A lot of great players on (& off) those lists, and some tough choices had to be made. I never saw Geraci play, was he better than Calcaterra?

Ionescu had no business being named mvp of that league over grabow, samra, or falls.
very funny that none of them even crack the 4 teams and falls makes honorable mention
really that tells me whoever did the voting didnt see much dfal basketball.

So far just a couple of responses in on the "ALL METRO" selections and the posters responses are in stark contrast to each other.
I wiil say from past history that the SF Chron selections are fairly well respected and not too many arguments in past over the selections.
Readers have to remember this is from the greater bay area & includes several NorCal sections, which means an awful lot of schools [just one section the "CCS" has 92 schools alone. So far from my knowledge of the CCS I am not seeing anything glaring or anyone athlete deserving who has been excluded [ex: Alfred Hollins of SHC in SF was largely ignored on the San Jose Merc's All Star selections, yet was Regional POY for SF by SF Chron as well as 2nd team as a junior [which is HUGE] and is considered among the best juniors in CA currently [so props to SF Chron for recognizing Hollins].

That's a terrible job by the chronicle. I wonder if they ever watch games. I've seen San Marin this year, Geraci isn't close to Calcaterra. While I understand putting a list like that together is very difficult and someone will always be upset, that was a total disaster. How Pridgett from El Cerrito wasn't rated higher is beyond me. D2 runner-up and the reason that team was relevant this year.

I don't think we were in stark contrast. I agree Ionescu shouldn't have been the DFAL MVP, and that Grabow, Samra or Falls would have been better choices. But the fact remains that he was named MVP and then completely omitted from the Chron list. That is the stark contrast.
