I'm not looking for a rehashing of different points, but I'm curious what this commuity feels should be the next steps for a football season.

This was a personal preference opinion question. However, if I am gauging socio-political environment correctly, the HSFB season, that never was, is over already. A serious question: does anyone think the 2021 season is in jeopardy too?

Next steps? Prepare for a Fall 2021 season. The 2020 season is done. The goal posts keep moving. If current leadership is still in place, good chance it could be shutdown next Fall.

I'm torn. Obviously like most of you, I am a football fan.

I was really hoping that the vaccine roll out would allow for two shortened "season" where schools could clump a collection of Fall and Winter sports into the first "season" and Spring sports would get the entire second "season." I'm losing hope in that possibility. That would be my #1 preference. If that is the case, even five games of football would be worth it.

However, if there is to be only one season this year, I have to consider the Spring sport athletes and what they have already lost. At this point, Spring, Fall, and Winter sports have all lost one season in 2020. If there is a chance at playing only one sport season this Spring, it seems more equitable, fair, and just plain decent to give all the priority to Spring sports so that those kids don't lose TWO seasons.

I understand that at most schools, football is the Big Dog sport. That doesn't mean that the swimming baseball/softball, and track & field kids who specialize don't love their sports just as much. Giving football priority so that "at least they have some kind of season" while other sports lose two (or lose athletes to football) is hard to justify.

The numbers are basically even for the three options.

I went with a shortened 4-5 game option. Playing sports right now is not without risk at a time that our health care system is teetering. However, I think if anyone is able to do it safely, it is high schools for a number of reasons. I think we can start a season and the numbers will dictate what we get out of it. We might get 90% of the games played or we might have a slew of cancellations, but at least it would be given a chance.

I will stick to the football side only on this.

Imo, we only need a 3-4 game scheduled, followed by 1 or 2 bowl games. This allows for seniors to experience their final season and get film. I would eliminate lower levels for this yr, allow top sophomore or frosh to move up. Have the lower levels lift and condition only.
Match up top 3 or 4 teams in each league and then pair up with another league for your bowl games.

Example:
SFL 1 v SFL 2, 3, & 4.
Delta 1 v Delta 2, 3, & 4.
Take the top 4 and match up for FBS type playoff.

SFL matches up with DELTA for Bowl games.

Semis:
SFL 1 v Delta 2
Delta 1 v SFL 2

Winner plays in Championship.

100 Percent agree

I could be wrong but I think the CIF needs to have FB in order to recoup much needed lost money. I agree that spring sports ethically should be the priority, but financially and for the CIF, I think FB will be the priority. Spring sports can still go on, but many FB players would probably opt out or have to choose.
If the CIF does not recoup some money, then most sports could also be in danger in 2021-22.

That is great issue to look at, I was under the impression (and I could be wrong) that CIF really only got involved on the monetary side when playoffs are involved. My understanding is that most sports could still financially survive through their own tournaments, non-league and league play. If CIF didn't recoup money I could see playoffs, regional and state play definitely hurting.

There is going to be an official/ref shortage for all sports if games are played. CIF pays for all officials. CIF operates off of fb budget, no fb income means no budget. Im not sure it's as simple as this but I know this is going to be an issue.

Funny, this morning I received an email from NFHS asking to share their message about a significant need for more prep officials. They are starting a recruitment campaign.

I do not think there will be a 2020/2021 football season. ICU capacity is too high and very likely to remain at those levels until at least April. I tend to agree that if there is one season it should be for Spring sports. But here is another issue not talked about. Seems to me that even if CIF says "go ahead and play" that there are going to be a number (perhaps a large number) of school districts that will opt out. History says that school boards tend to be very risk adverse. I think we all should be hoping that there will be high school football in California in the Fall of 2021.

mistark-just to clarify- CIF only pays for officials in the playoffs-regular season games are paid by individual schools through local officials associations. You are correct in assuming there is potential for officials shortages.

Thanks for clarifying, I could have swore that I saw expenses for officials in our AD's last budget. The official shortage is going to be a real issue. It was starting to be an issue and hasn't got any better.

It will be interesting. I can think of quite a few multisport athletes that if there is a season on overlap in sports were they will have big choices. A few with potential opportunity to choose a D1 sport. Plus many of the smaller schools will be impacted where their better athletes have a choice. I guess its better to have a choice than not. Only one county in CA is rated moderate and 2 as substantial tier as of yesterday. So far only sports allowed in all counties is: Cross Country, Golf, Skiing/ Snowboarding, Swimming & Diving, Tennis, and Track & Field. Maybe a few will move to one lower tier and allow Baseball, Field Hockey, Girls Lacrosse, and Softball. Only one county allows football in the whole state in the mountains bordering Nevada. Football is done unless counties move a couple tiers in the next couple weeks or special allowance is made but that won't happen as there will be lawssuits for discriminating.

Agree with this, the season is already over... We should have played like the other 34 states did and these kids could have played out their season whether there were covid cancellations or not... They would have delt with it and been fine....

Instead these poor kids had to sit around hoping for a season that is never going to happen....

I do think that 2021 will happen because with the Vaccine and moving out of the Cold and Flu season the numbers will drop dramatically by the summer and the teams will be able to play....

If kids have a choice in the Spring between playing a "Spring" sport or football in the "Spring" I think football loses more often. Kids are going to ask their friends..."who is going out for the (football/basketball/baseball) team?" Do you want to practice and play a hard sport like football on a team where some of your best players have opted to play baseball/basketball/etc. or are you going to join them? If my starting QB decides to play basketball, our best receiver decides to join him, and two or our better players on defense play baseball am I going to want to go through football practices to play in games where I think we are going to get our asses kicked? Football played in a season where kids have other choices like baseball or basketball would be in big trouble. Especially if your school has fewer than 1,000 students.

What does everyone think is a realisitic gap between the "2020" season and the 2021 season in terms of player safety?

I think they should be playing now, but looks like season cancelled so keeping a schedule like it should b for 2021 and start spring practice and go from there. It is a lost season for all except for a few sports.

It isn't just as simple as mortality rates. This from CBS News:

A Texas trauma surgeon says it's rare that X-rays from any of her COVID-19 patients come back without dense scarring. Dr. Brittany Bankhead-Kendall said, "Post-COVID lungs look worse than any type of terrible smoker's lung we've ever seen. And they collapse. And they clot off. And the shortness of breath lingers on... and on... and on."

"Everyone's just so worried about the mortality thing and that's terrible and it's awful," she told CBS in Dallas. "But man, for all the survivors and the people who have tested positive even without symptoms this is going to be a problem." “It's not something you can blow off. This isn't something you want to have. Because even if you survive, you still may be left with some severe complications that make it very hard for you to go back to your baseline functioning."

And this is why I think it is going to be hard to convince CIF and/or school boards to put students on athletic fields where they will have close contact.

to people saying, let's at least try, we can do it safely, we can cancel games...

you do realize, if there are games cancelled due to covid, that means people are getting covid... and that means they are infecting family members, coaches... there will be deaths.

i just don't get the disconnect..... can't stop shaking my head.
