SI Article on former California High Strength and Conditioning Coach

IMO, strength and conditioning is a big part of Cal High's success in the Sanchez and Billeci eras. Why schools like Foothill and other EBAL foes don't put more effort into the weight room boggles my mind.

B101, thank you for posting the link. Coach Manuel is a local legend to Cal kids. A star at Pinole Valley (my HS rival btw) with his twin brother and they both made it to the show. Along the way, some acting gigs and a well developed memory of quotes to hand some wisdom over to his charges. His position at Cal High was fully parental/fundraising supported. He wanted to remain there due to close proximity to his mother who still lived in Pinole. However, the factors that be unwisely de-funded his position and after hanging for a year post-Sanchez, off to BG he went. Just like Sanchez, he's got the chops to move upward.

When he wasn't retained, I can state it was the most demonstrative (negatively) my sons have ever been regarding a personnel move by the Grizz. They were pissed. He was a leader, a mentor and being less of a "exciteable" type than Tony, players fully gravitated to him for advice and sound words of team building. Additionally, he was an excellent D Coord. Simply see what Cal did on D from 05-10 when he was a DC and what's happened since. No comparison.

When your National Merit son writes one of his first college essays about his DC/Strength in HS (he played O,) you know the man has made a deep impact on his players.

Seany had a special relationship with the community, and a strong bond the with kids at Cal Hi ;-). Who, was your son?

Unbelievable information. Thanks for sharing. I would love to pick this guy's brain.

Great article. Good to see. The kids at Cal loved Coach Manuel and gravitated to him. When Tony left, people were ecstatic that he had stayed back, but as 1315 bemoaned, when his position was de-funded he left to be part of the BG juggernaut with Tony. When he came back to see a couple of games afterward, and there were long lines of kids waiting to talk to him. He was/is a fantastic motivator. BG has a good one there.

NCSF,
Send an email to ball@highschoolballistics.com, and I will see what I can do.
Sean is always very open to sharing. As many people have helped him along the way. At one point Mike Blasquez, was trying to hire him at Cal. Do not know if Gorman is a better job, just know it pays better ;-)

Who is Pinole Valleys rival? Didnt know they had one.DeAnza? El Cerrito?

De Anza was natural rival to PV from old ACAL/RBAL/ACCAL days as many friends from Crespi Jr Hi split to go to those HS. From late 60s to 90s when Hercules was built.

1989 Pinole vs De Anza still one of the best high school football games I have seen. They were no longer in the same league. Jamal Perry interception return for a touchdown with about with limited time left to go in the game ;-). That was back when those two teams could produce a standing room only crowd.
I was a kid, but it was jammed packed shoulder to shoulder and even the hillside at De Anza high school was packed. De Anza actually has a chance to be "decent" over the next two seasons.
