Just curious what people in the SJS might be thinking as all leagues are getting started as to who might be still be playing toward the end of the season. These are just teams I have seen lately and programs I have watched over the years that are playing some solid basketball as of late:
DI
1) St. Mary’s
2) Folsom
3) C Oaks
4) Bear Creek
DII
1) Sac High
2) Antelope
3) Whitney
4) Del Oro
DIII
1) CB
2) Placer
3) Lathrop
4) Merced
DIV
1) West Campus
2) Foothill
3) Bear River
4) Union Mine
DV
1) Colfax
2) Argonaut
3) Mariposa Co
4) Waterford

Those are good lists, I think, however McClatchy is probably more battle-tested than Bear Creek or Cosumnes Oaks.

In D2, though, I wonder if Sacramento will be consistent enough to get past Antelope. Neither team has a big win, unless you count Sacramento's over a struggling West Campus team, but Sacramento has played a much tougher schedule.

And speaking of West Campus, Foothill has the better resume so far in D4, but doesn't have the postseason experience West Campus does.

And then the bigger question: Which teams wind up in Open and D1?

Presumably the D1 winner is Open, and if the runnerup to SMS is Folsom, both would probably go. Does the D2 winner? Or maybe McClatchy out of D1?

And what about West Campus? Presumably the defending state champ status will have no impact, but I still see them as D1 at the worst.

There are eight teams in the Open, and at this point, it looks like all will come from CCS, SJS and NCS -- meaning two sections get three representatives. If SJS got three, who would the third be?

At this point of the season Clay, the only two teams that are Open worthy from SJS are St Marys and Folsom. I would say these 2 are locks for the Open. Your question about if the SJS got 3 teams is easy...the only other team that can really be considered is McClatchy. There is still a lot of season left but it looks like they are getting healthy at the right time as Hall is back and Fermil has been a big contributor to go with Richelle Turney and Nia Lowery. Let's say they finish strong and then make a run in the playoffs and beat Folsom to face St Marys in section championship, then they could be that 3rd team. If not, only St Marys and Folsom should be selected for Open.

If only St. Mary's and Folsom from SJS (which I tend to agree with), and only Mitty and Pinewood from CCS, does that mean four from NCS?

Or does the Northern Section winner -- Pleasant Valley or Enterprise -- wind up in the Open?

I would think most likely 4 from NCS. My preseason predictions were SMS, Mitty, Carondelet, Pinewood, Salesian top 5. Then BOD, Campo and either Folsom/McClatchy. Obviously Campo is not going to Open. BOD obviously doesn't have the record, but this team is young and I wouldn't want to play them in the playoffs, they are a scary team and could make a big run if they get put in D1. For the last 2 spots, I would think it would be between St Joseph, Cardinal Newman, Eastside Prep and Miramonte. I actually think Cardinal Newman is very strong and with their experience, can compete with anyone, so I would select them as one of the teams.

Very good breakdowns here! This year has been interesting already in SJS section. I believe there is much more parity this season which is definitely good to see. In previous years, the top 3 or 4 teams were just dominant over everyone else. Good to see other programs really developing and having really good seasons and even competing with the Bay Area teams.
I would not be surprised to see some upsets in the SJS playoffs this year. In D1, Bear Creek and Edison have really impressed me. Also Cosumnes Oaks having very good season. Don't forget about Oak Ridge, they are well coached and took Folsom to the wire, and could very well upset McClatchy or Folsom in playoffs.
In D2, despite Sac's struggles, they are never a team to be taken lightly and cause matchup problems with lots of teams with their speed and athleticism. I would predict a Sac and Antelope final as well, but would not be surprised at all if Whitney, Del Oro, Roseville, St Francis or even Elk Grove could make a run. Will be fun to see how 2nd half of season plays out. Hopefully everyone stays healthy, looking forward to seeing some more great basketball action from all the teams!

Miramonte and CN both beat Eastside so I'd say Eastside out. St. Joes win vs Clet and good showing vs Mitty should be in if they win d4 and they'll be a huge favortie to do so. Miramonte seems to be playing good ball and getting better with a nice win vs LCD and a close loss to Dimond, Cn lost to Dimond in a blowout and lost a OT game to LCD, edge Miramonte. Lot's of ball left but things are starting to shake out.
