SJS Playoff Brackets

Not sure why they didn’t just release 2 brackets for D3 and D7. At least narrow it down for teams to begin scouting and watching film to 2 teams, rather than 5 or 6 potential teams they think they could face. I’m sure they already have them ready to go.

The judge has ruled in favor of the Section. Brackets will be released within the hour.

Brackets look good except how does Downey get seeded 8 in D2 when they went 9-1, a league champ, beat D1 Lincoln. Behind 5 seed 4th place SFL Whitney, 6 seed 2nd place Delta Elk Grove and 7 seed Monterey Trail whose best win is Burbank.

The SJS must want that money with a possible Downey/Central Catholic 2nd round is all I can guess.

Downey was always going to play Lodi no matter where they were seeded #5 through #8. They can't play Gregori because of being in the same league. Lodi, Inderkum, and Woodcreek are all similarly rated, but Lodi is MUCH closer. The Section clearly looked at bus miles for the first round. And yeah, I'm sure matching the winner of Downey vs Lodi with Central Catholic also came into play. Short bus ride and bigger gate.

I thought Downey was pretty low too.

I find it interesting that earlier someone pointed out the VOL is not the SEC. Well I do find that the fact that members of of the VOL have top seeds in 3 divisions? Well not the SEC but pretty good for league of D4 or smaller schools.
I came back to this forum because I thought my team was being slighted. But as I said let the season work out. And Oakdale #1 seed. A week bye. Banged up kids get healthy. This Oakdale team is a little different. In 3 years they had 7x 1,000 yard rushers.. With fullback out for season that won't be happening! More balanced. Looking forward to playoffs!

Rock, I think I said "while the VOL is awesome, it's not the SEC" I think I was actually defending the VOL from a Downey fan at the time? I still stand by that comment. I am sorry if I triggerd or upset you in any way. I still feel this way. I looked again, but could not find Alabama or Georiga in the VOL.

Imo, the VOL is the top league in the southern section. Wishing all VOL teams much success in the playoffs.

Happy football to everyone!

I get a little defensive about the southern part of the section!. It's obvious we don't have the athletes like the Sacramento area. No Alabama's down here. We don't have the recruitment money they have! I attend a few HS games. And I just am impressed by how competitive VOL schools are. And this how competitive the VOL is we want a redo with Manteca with the back field all healthy!

How many Pop Warner programs are in Oakdale? I bet there is one program that runs a similar system to the High School and most of the core players have been playing together since the age of 7? that’s a huge advantage most high schools don’t have so I hate the cry me river we are small town football we can’t compete……u guys always have plenty of size and more cohesion then 99.9% of high school programs in Nor Cal

They do. Their games are the place to be on Friday nights. Oakdale isn’t small anymore it’s 1700 students, though not long ago they were just cracking 1000 in the growing town. It’s actually somewhat common out there even in smaller schools. In further south in places like mendota and Firebaugh, schools are 500-1000 students, 90%+ hispanic many of whom are 1/2 generation. Yet they still have robust programs that begin in grade school and athletics are important. Compared to 1500-2500 student Bay Area schools that struggle to field 2 teams or have 150 people at a Saturday afternoon game in sleepy Marin (that league is actually way better this year maybe families from SF are moving in, it’s a great league in all other sports).

I totally agree. There wasn’t anything fair about a #8 seed for a league champion who also beat a couple of very good non-league opponents. If it’s a second-round matchup of two Modesto schools, there’s no guarantee that’s even going to happen. Making an assumption like that and using it (and distance between schools) as a ‘reason’ for justifying this #8 seed just doesn’t fly IMHO.

Oakdale with 1700 kids in the same bracket as sac high with 400 🤦‍♂️ Oakdale is an amazing place to play Friday night unless you’re a visitor. The corale is an experience for sure. I’m glad we are on the other side of the bracket. But Manteca and Lincoln and even golden valley are not push overs for a school of 400. The VOL has BIG time football. Coach Merzon is one of the best in NorCal.

Let’s not forget Sac Hi is a charter, a public school that can be choosy with acceptance. They aren’t from some 5,000 person valley town

The Section could have easily put Downey at #5, but it really wouldn't change much. Downey was always going to be matched with Lodi in the first round. #1 Central Catholic and #4 Antelope are the expected match ups after that. The only difference between being a #5 and a #8 is the order in which you could play those two teams.

Of course they run the same offence. An Oakdale alumni has been head coach since 1959. Consistently! Like Escalon had a Loureo until a couple of years ago as head coach. Oakdale is a tight community. I no longer live in Oakdale. But I bring kids from my church to the Corral. Great environment. Same goes for Escalon. That's why I like small town football!

Well where MC415 is from they are down to just 1 youth program in the entire county (pop 260,00) with at least 8 11 man playing schools (1000+ students). The county east (Napa) has a youth program in Napa (for 3 public and 1 private HS) and I think small town St Helena has a team, not sure about Calistoga anymore. The county north Sonoma (pop 500k!) is down to I believe 6 youth teams maybe 7, there has been at least 3 programs that have folded in the last decade.

The valley is different, no matter the racial makeup or size of the town there is almost always a youth feeder to the HS. It is awesome, plus the towns are full of young families, out in the Bay schools are closing left and right due to declining enrollment.

And that is why I like valley football. I even like some hillbilly teams. And at the games you have Mr Cecil and Mr Bob the 90+ year olds that can tell you about Oakdale football since the 40's. We lost Mr Cecil a couple of years ago. But still have Mr Bob!. And Coach Clipper. Who was head coach when my father was in HS. Gotta love the home town atmosphere!
And yes they run the " boring " wing-t! My son went to Downey. So I had to listen to the dads saying how boring the wing-t was. It's the whole home town Friday night light!
