SMB @ SMS

Not really as bad as that. SMB was missing ( starters ) players, but then again SMS was not shooting well either.

Will talk,

I think SMB had their best chance with the two McDonald all american 6 footers Gabby Green, and Mikayla Cowling plus MaAne Mosley and others. They don't to my knowledge have the talent or depth of talent to matchup against SMS. SMS is clearly the deepest team in Northern California. Probably the deepest in the nation. There are a couple of teams that might give them a harder time than SMB. But SMS are the team to beat if you want to call your team the best IMO.

best chance implies SMB didn't beat them when they had Cowling, Green, and Mosley... Also SMB has talent, just don't have the depth and missing 2 starters on a thin team is never going to go well against a team the caliber of SMS. SMB will be a threat in D4 without a doubt. If Villa returns this season they will be right there in the top 10 nor cal again.

SMB did beat SMS when Green and Cowling were playing!

Yes they may have beaten SMS with that group of girls but I think it's fair to say having 2 McDonald All Americans plus Mosley and others they should have been even more dominant than perhaps they were. If I'm not mistaken Salesian pretty much had their number during much of that time. I know Mariya Moore was special, but I thought SMB had the overall deeper team? Did Green, Cowling, Mosley, and company win any state championships?

I think SMB may have had a key player or two injured part of the time too? Any thoughts or comments to add a few different perspectives? And who are the key players on SMB this season?
I'm guessing the talent level is no where near what it was then.

Salesian was always a "deeper team" while Saint Mary's was always more top heavy talent wise. Salesian had the Moore Sisters, McNair (Portland State) Zoe Correal 6'4''(Colorado) Taylor Crowder(Sac St.),Deja Stallworth, along with solid role players and a lot of size, which SM lacked. SMB always had someone hurt at some point, Berry, and Green missed much of the soph seasons with injuries. the next year Mosley was lost with ACL, then the next year Chinn went down with an ACL, no excuses though, Salesian always gave SMB fits and vice versa. SM was led by Cowling, Green, Berry(Santa Clara) and Mosley. Salesian was a bad matchup for SMB style wise. In that Moore vs Green, Cowling era i think the series record was 7-7...was a great rivalry. SM never won a state title, lost to Windward and Jordin Canada, Lost to Salesian in Norcal, then was in the open division the 3rd year and lost to BOD, the last year they lost to Salesian in the open. When you talk about dominance, i think SMB was one of the most dominant teams during that 4 year period. Who else can say they beat Mitty, SMS, Mater Dei, Long Beach Poly, Carondelet, Sac Hi, SI, Sierra Canyon, Pinewood, Modesto Christian and others. That 4 year period was very dominant. Salesian was also very dominant during that time, they went to state 3 years in a row.

How did SMB get put into the open last year over Brookside and/or O'Dowd...? All 3 teams were runner-ups in their sections. Still a head scratcher to me...especially since Brookside had that big win over Salesian in the WCJ and Odowd had the crazy DQ from the year before( BO should have been given the benefit of the doubt for the OPEN IMO) No surprise that both BC and Odowd made it to the state finals. Gil Lemon doesn't do the NCS any favors when it comes to placing their teams in the OPEN. And as I have said before, and I'm sticking to it....I think SMB got a raw deal last year. They should have been #1 seed in Norcals D4.

SMB beat Vanden. and Carondelet lost to Dublin. And yes SMB shoulda been in D4. SMB has gotten a raw deal so to speak for the last 3 seasons. Implement a new Open division the year they are loaded and would have won a state title, and they lose to an even more loaded BOD team, the next year they lose to Salesian in semi finals of open in the 5th game of the rivalry, then last year they get put in open cause they beat Vanden lol. it happens i guess.

They sure shouldn't be put in the open this year. The lack of depth is maddening. And they will have to depend on a lot of frosh next year since they don't even have a JV team this year. But that is another story in itself. Sheesh!!!
