Smb jumps out on them. The hall looks rattled. Having home games for norcal finals is a clear advantage...smb 17. Stuart hall 3..

The crowd is rocking and the hall looks spooked...

My Stuart Hall Knights had one of the greatest comebacks in California Basketball playoff history tonight. Down 34-17 at the half, they came out strong in the 3rd quarter. Buckled down on defense, and eventually dwindled St. Mary's lead down to nothing. This was an amazing win for our program, for our coach, and most especially for the kids. They've been working so hard all year and now our small little school of 250 kids is playing in the Division 4 state Championship.

Okay now that I got all the warm fuzzies out of the way, something needs to be said about the REFS in this game.

Stuart Hall up 5 points with 40 seconds left fouled a St Mary's player shooting a 3. Maybe it was a foul, maybe it wasn't. The ref decided to give our player a technical foul as well. To give St Mary's 5 free throws. They made 4. Got the ball made a basket and led by 1 after the call.

Okay, I understand refs need to control the game. I get it. But how does a ref in his right mind possibly call a technical foul against a kid in that close a game? I don't care if the kid yelled a swear at the top of his lungs, what do you expect a kid to do in a close game? Imagine a kid having that hanging on his shoulders all year. Not fair at all, and even though Stuart Hall won, I still think all three of the refs calling that game tonight should be terminated from ever working in the CIF again.

Moral: You don't call technical fouls against a team in the last minute of a game, unless he literally punches another player or says something extremely offensive.

Moral: You don't get yourself called for a technical in the last minute of a championship game.
I was at the game , it was a bad call on the Technical especially since the same reaction happened in OT and nothing was called. The refs made it tough on both teams with the inconsistent calls .
Great atmosphere for a high school game. Both teams battled. Sad one team had to lose.

I get that. But these refs are adults. They are adults that are supposed to teach kids the lessons and rules of playing the game. When you give a kid a technical with less than a minute remaining in the game, IMO it's extremely selfish. It's the referee making the game about himself, which honestly in the Bay Area, I see happen far too often.

Refs need to realize that they have two jobs: 1) Control the Game 2) Call it Both Ways.

Tonight Neither Happened IMHO.

I agree. Honestly St. Mary's packed the house and Coach Buckner had a heck of a first season at St. Mary's. Anyone who is a St. Mary's alum should be extremely proud and prepared for more success in the near future. Have nothing bad to say at all about St. Mary's.

Oh also their campus is really beautiful.

It was a foul. Didnt give shooter the space to come down. On both plays. The technical wss valid as well. U can't swear at a ref as a player. Stuart hall is lucky the free throw shooter missed first free throw. Then knocked down 4 straight to tie up game
...To be honest smb blew game. That 18-6 third quarter. And then Stuart Hall took it. MILES Amos made some clutch plays. Drives to hoop. Nigel Burris bounced back from a awful first game against St Mary's in MCD playoffs to finish with 20. Good all around game by both teams...

Even if it was a foul. As a referee you have to have the ability to go up to the kid and say calm it down first before you give a technical. If it was 3 minutes left in the 3rd quarter and the kid swore and you warned him before fine.

But all it takes is the ref saying, HEY, ONE MORE TIME AND ILL T YOU UP. The ref didn't do that. At least from my vantage point, I didn't see him give a warning once.

I guarantee you the player would not have said anything, and then no technical would have been needed.

Just telling you guys how I would have called the game IF I were a referee. It would take a ton of things happening for me to T a kid up with less than a minute left to go.

No way Lee...that Technical was not warranted! The kid was all the way at his bench on the opposite end of the court.

Have to point out a couple of players who stood out for me tonight:

For St. Mary's I really liked #23 Jason Roche. Kid can hit a three pointer with ease, and he kept St. Mary's alive in that game, before he fouled out. #22 Dylan Wyatt also has a lot of potential, and I can't seem to find what year he is, but I'm guessing he was a Junior or Senior.

For Stuart Hall #5 Miles Amos drove to the rim all game, and hit free throws at the end numerous times. I've watched a lot of basketball in my day, he is easily one of the fastest guys I've seen play, College, NBA, High School, doesn't matter Mr. Amos is very good. Also #35 Nigel Burris is just doing some special things as a freshman for the Hall. Stuart Hall is a young school, but I can say with confidence he's the best Freshman player we have ever had. It's been an absolute joy and pleasure to be able to watch Mr. Burris' game continue to grow!
