Sol Henik is no longer the Varsity basketball coach at Acalanes high school, after 6 years of being the head man. The search begins for his replacement.

Wow... Really good coach, got a lot out of his kids.

Did he leave voluntarily, or was he removed?

From my contacts at Acalanes it was AD Takahashi who worked behind the scenes to have him removed. This comes a few weeks after Takahashi had the JV football coach removed for what many are calling false charges. Parents are in an uproar at the school. Takahashi remains a cancer at the school. Once again many are circling the wagons to have Takahashi fired.

If one takes a trip down memory lane this is the same Takahashi who promoted himself as head football coach against all parents wishes. It was a colossal failure. The district continues to allow this guy to remain AD and inflict pain on all coaches and parents at Acalanes.

Par for the course. The Acalanes School District has some how allowed this guy to remain in place through many credible attempts by previous principals and coaches to have him fired. There is a new principal at Acalanes this school year. I'm told parents have been working with this new principal in removing Takahashi. It's too bad two more quality coaches fell victim to this guy.

So much for doing right by the kids.

Thanks for the post Pat. I had a kid go through the Acalanes program with coach Henik like you did. In general Coach Henik is a good man and solid coach. He wasn’t a world beater and never was able to overcome Campolindo stealing the Lafayette talent zoned for Acalanes. In fairness to Coach Henik, the Mahaney Bros were the game changer in Lamorinda and the decision to attend Campo was already made before Coach Henik was hired. This has not been an Acalanes only problem. Miramonte is also dealing with Campo taking Orinda talent such as Radell. That being said I think most would agree Henik performed well from a W/L standpoint given the amount of talent his teams had at Acalanes.

The larger issue at Acalanes as others have mentioned is the AD. All the coaches at the school in every program hate the guy. As others have mentioned here parents are at the end of the rope with the AD. Friends close to the situation told me Henik said enough was enough and stopped taking the AD’s crap. This is when the AD turned on him and worked to have Henik removed.

It’s too bad the Acalanes School District is empowering this man to run roughshod all over coaches, parents and children at Acalanes High School. He must have someone in the office protecting him.

Good reporting and accurate. You should dive into the situation with the JV Football Coach and what Takahashi pulled on him. Some reporter is going to get of a gem of a story.

Im not sure it's a principal call. He's been in the district for years and has tenure. If a call was gonna be made, it would need to come from Superintendent Nickerson.

There is always more to a story and I assume there is more to this one. Blasting the AD without all the information is not warranted. Coaches are not let go by the AD. They have input, but the ultimate decision is made by the Principal. Usually there are multiple reasons for letting go of a coach.

There is not much interest in being a high school athletic director in this area. It’s not a full time job. You teach a few less classes and earn a stipend, but your at the school late almost every day if the week and on games days very late. Schools that have an experienced AD are not going to make a change unless they have someone else lined up, which at the high school level is just not happening.

That same AD refused to grant me permission to cover a game for them during the spring football season

Normally I would agree with you on there being more to the story. In this situation and several others over many years it was Takahashi who buried coaches. If there was a devil on earth Takahashi would fit the part.

Short17: I would encourage you to do your own research here. From what I'm told Takahashi also urged a teacher to file a fake report about the JV Football Coach with the district earlier this month. This coach was immediately fired without merit. The situation is under review and pending an appeal. It's a truly made for Halloween horror movie taking place with this guy @Acalanes HS.

Sol Henik is now an assistant coach at DLS! The new Varsity basketball coach at Acalanes should be announced by the end of next week.

Good update Pat C. Do you happen to know who the candidates are? The AD has a history of making poor decisions on new coaches. He looks for 'yes men' instead of taking parent feedback seriously. Speaking of the AD I was emailed this petition on Monday https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfnpr8PcWawaRHsTj6DMLNu3gn2q5y_FhBMytzdEcSoPgQb7Q/viewform

Thats a really good hire for DLS to have an experienced HS coach on the staff to help with the transition.

People close to the Acalanes situation have suggested the new principal has committed to removing Takahashi as AD by the end of the school year, and possibly sooner. This is great news for Acalanes coaches, parents and athletes.
