Will not forget soon seeing Mike at an SMC (his #3, Austin) vs 1315.2 game in 2015, prior to the diagnosis. Earlier, we coached against each other four years. First thing he asked was how 1315.1 was doing who was same age as his #2, Nick. Could have easily puffed out his chest as many Stanford dads might, let alone that Stephen made it to the show. Never did. That humbleness struck me, as does the emotion Stephen shows for his mom. As genuine as it gets.
Just a horrible situation. Thankfully, the A’s and Cards worked the deal so he could spend some quality time with his mother during her last days.
