This coming football season change.VOL Is by enrollment a D4 league. But with continued success rule. Central Catholic is now D1 . Manteca now D2. Oakdale D3. All others D4. My question is there any other league like that?

I heard that the next league change will be Central Catholic moving into the CCAL with Turlock, Gregori etc. Its a D1/D2 league but not as strong as the VOL which don’t make much sense.

It has been proposed by someone else on another site that the SJ section should create a football-only super league in the south with St. Mary's, Lincoln, Central Catholic, Oakdale, Manteca, Turlock, possibly Edison. St. Marys dominates its league every year, as does Turlock except for last year which was an outlier, and Central, Oakdale and Manteca are always good. Here are the final Maxpreps section rankings for the last 5 years, starting with the most current season: St. Mary's 6, 4, 12, 8, 2, avg. 6.4; Manteca 7, 9, 11, 28, 6, avg. 12.2; Central Catholic 3, 24, 28, 4, 8, avg. 13.4; Oakdale 8, 14, 21, 37, 7, avg. 17.4; Lincoln 15, 6, 27, NR, 44, avg. 18.4, Turlock 40, 10, 9, 13, 26, avg. 19.6; Edison 11, 21, 17, 19, 68, avg. 27.2. St. Mary's has been by far the most consistent with no rating lower than 12, but the other schools have had wide fluctuations. But they have mostly dominated their leagues. With a tough league schedule like this there should be an understanding that all would make the playoffs. Now, will this happen? I have no idea. As I said, someone else proposed this and I don't know if he has any insight. This would be a departure from what has been done but it would be interesting.

For what it's worth, the PAL Bay has schools ranging in size from 650 students to just over 2,000.

As someone that watches Manteca and CC play every year. I feel CC should be D2. They can be competitive in that division. D1 some years yes but not every year. Manteca and Oakdale belong in D3. Manteca high gets the majority of good athletes. Oakdale is a system team. Kids learn the " System " at a young age. By HS they know that system. Now they have times they have good athletes come through the system. Those are the teams win championships. But the system gets them to playoffs every year.
The VOL has been and will always be a competitive league. In the bronze age when I went to HS VOL had St Mary's, Lincoln, Tracy and Atwater those schools all had great athletes.

But unlike the SJS and the VOAL league, CCS doesn't seed playoff teams via enrollment. Nor does the CCS section pre-set divisions like the SJS section.

There will never be a situation where all teams in a league automatically qualify for the playoffs. Look at the SFL: Folsom, Oak Ridge, Granite Bay, Del Oro, Rocklin, Whitney. The SFL gets four automatic qualifiers. The other two can and usually do still make the playoffs, but they have to meet the qualifications to receive At-Large playoff bids.

I thought about the VOAL last year and was surprised by the multiple division levels (3) from this league in playoffs. WCAL, using a completely different formula, had three different playoff divisions. And I think there were leagues from the SDS and SS sections that had multiple playoff divisions. But I do think VOAL is unique in having 4 different pre-classed divisions in one league.

The topic is having so many pre-set division teams in one league. But your point is an important one. Multiple divisions in one league doesn't preclude playoff spots. But theoretically, VOAL could be selected for 4 different playoff divisions.

Last year there was CC in D2 Oakdale and Manteca in D3 East Union and Kimball in D4. This year CC in D1 Manteca D2 Oakdale D3 and rest will be D4. Unless they win league then they have to play D3. Because it is considered D3 league? So this year there could be teams in 4 different divisions. It is definitely the only one like that in SJS.

A valid point, the SFL is strong. However, the difference in the "Super League" is that these teams are being pulled from existing leagues where they dominate for the most part into a league where someone has to finish 5th, 6th and 7th. Switch from a situation where you're in the playoffs every year to one where you could have a great team and be left out? Personally, I don't think they will do this Super League. When they do the league shuffles I just think they'll try to do their best and hope that some of the bottom-dwellers can improve their programs.
