Ultimately, I still think that splitting private and public schools is the best way to do it and then have the State Public School champ from the top Division play the private school champ at the end. However, that seems like such a drastic change that it is extremely unlikely.
Therefore, I suggest that the best way to handle things with only a minor tweak is to take the top 4 teams from Nor Cal and top 4 teams for So Cal and make an open division. 8 is too many IMHO. Taking 8 teams really waters down the rest of the divisions and in some cases moves teams into the Open that really have no legit chance of prevailing in such a format.

The sections would probably never agree to this because it dilutes their championships, but once the regular season ends pick the top 8 teams in each region and play those regional open tournaments at the same time as the section championships (no more open section brackets... D-1 through D-5) The winner of the Norcal plays the winner of the south for the open championship, the other 7 teams from each open regional go back to their enrollment divisions for the division regionals. All winners and runners up of the section playoffs in each division also go to division regionals. Only slight problem is the open teams would likely have almost 3 weeks off before they play again.

For the most part everyone knows who the open division teams will be before section playoffs anyway.

Indeed, it makes more sense then watering down the rest of the divisions.

Everybody play in their own division, determine state champions by divisions, then take 6 winners and play 6 team bracket OPEN championship... D1 and D2 BYE, D3 vs D6 D4 vs D5
Instead of having D1 and D2 with byes just simple say the top two seeds have byes. Last year a D3 team, O'Dowd, was the best team in the state. They would not have had a bye in this scenario. But I like it, much better than the extremely flawed system we have now.

Sounds good in theory, but D5 is not typically going to have a worthy team for this new tournament. Occasionally, yes there is a very good D5 team but not usually the case... And including D6??? That is a bye for whoever gets them as well...

I personally like the Open for the fact that there is one true, really good tournament... I ignore the rest of the division games for the most part now, but that makes it easier to monitor as well if you only care about one division...

As much as we all would like to see the best of the best play, and skip a watered down version. The reason is $$$$$. There will always be teams included and games played that should not be played. But I like it, I'm a Hickory fan.

Ive seen several tweets ,posts etc how the CIF wanted the North to Have 8 in the open because the South had 8.. They are different animals and there lies the problem. Every year the North gets sucked into that . I remember when the First year of the open the North sent its best D1 Sheldon, its Top 3 D2 in Newark,Serra, and Mitty, Its 2 best D3 in Odowd and Modesto Christian and its best D4 Salesian. The south sacrificed D1 placing 6 teams and 1 D3. Guess what North only won D1. Smart southern CIF Brass.

The same thing is happening this year. The North is sending its top 4 D1, DLS,MODESTO,Folsom And Sheldon, Top2 D2 Sac And St Francis, Top D3 in Moreau and top D4 in Salesian vs The South has 4 SS open teams, Chino, Mater dei, Montgomery, Sierra Canyon, top 2 Open San Diego with Foothills and Cathedral Catholic, LA open Westchester and D4 Imannuel from
Central Section. That leaves several monsters in all the Divisions in the south and they could run the tables.

SOUTH
D1 has teams like Redondo Union #9 Nationally, Crespi #9 State and #27 Nationally, Fairfax #17 State and #67 National, Alemany, Centennial that beat DLS And they beat a Foothills christian team ,that is in open and lost to Chino by 2 , by15
D2 ....................... Orange Lutheran, JW North ,Taft ( Which beat Immanuel who is in the open)
D3 ......................... Ayala 30-3 who only lost to open Mater Dei in OT by 4, Santa Barbara 31-1
D4 ........................Diamond Ranch Who won Southern Section 3A will play state D4
D5........................St Joe 29-3 who only lost by 1 point to Open Immannuel

NORTH top 3 in each
D1.....Bellarmine, Jesuit, Monte Vista------------------Could Be DLS,Sheldon Folsom Or MC
D2.....Serra, El Cerrito, Mitty,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Sac Or St Francis
D3...Weston Ranch, Manteca Riordan,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Moreau Catholic
D4...Half Moon Bay, Central Catholic, Palma,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Salesian
D5...St Joes, Mariposa County, University

We would have a better Chance if we didn't put all the best teams in the open. The South doesn't do it why should we. Immanuel is no where near an open . Cathedral Catholic lost to Jesuit and Mitty at the Father Berry. Los Angeles OPEN only put 1 team.

In the North The NCS and The SJS should have an open . The winner of each along with the CCS go to Norcal open. that gives you 3 teams. Add 1 more for a total of 4. Maybe a play in game. with 2 runner ups. with loser staying in its division.

For fun Say CCS St Francis , DLS, modesto win their opens. Folsom plays Sac and wins. Those are 4 open teams Sac drops back to D2

State Championships
Open Chino vs DLS
D1 Redondo vs Sheldon
D2 Taft Vs Sac High
D3 Ayala vs Moreau Catholic
D4 Diamond Ranch Vs Salesian
D5 St Joes VS Sy Joes which will probably happen

BETTER YET THROW THE OPEN GARBAGE OUT THE WINDOW AND GO BACK TO THE WAY IT USE TO BE

It has been talked about before, but it would be great to do a TOC after the state playoffs. Shorten the section and NorCal each by a week and take that time for a TOC bracket. Teams will jockey to get into that tournament instead of wanting to avoid it
