Given Gavin Newsom's statement that opening gyms and hair salons will be months, not weeks, away, is there any hope for the summer season?

Of course, some Southern states are moving forward with planning for large events, so there may be games elsewhere -- but how would California teams practice?

Assuming there is no summer basketball here, the biggest impact will be on the girls from the classes of 2022 and 2023, who won't be seen. The 2021 girls have their resume, pretty much, though obviously another summer would help.

But maybe there's a way. Are any NorCal clubs planning to practice? (Modoc County just dropped all restrictions -- teams could gather there, I guess.)

I don’t see it happening and sadly I think HS Football is toast this year. Really a bummer for all those kids.

I wonder if Modoc really wants people from other parts of the state that have bigger covid infections going to their county or is it open to just them? Lets also say that Southern states open it up only to have it shut down shortly after it opens. I really don't things will go back to normal until there's a vaccine. Agree for the 2021+ classes that are being impacted.

Actually I think the 2022 and 2023 classes are in much better shape than the 2021's. For 90% of kids, the summer before their senior year is the big one. Those younger classes will have other summers, but the 2021 class is the one that will lose out. Yes you can send out film, and that may draw initial interest, but very few schools will offer on film. This is the summer all of the 2021's have been working so hard for all these years and they may have nothing.

do you think that with only having access to film, coaches are going to be offering on just what they see? hard to imagine not putting together a 2021 class because not having access to watch live. Will be even harder though if there's not 2020-2021 season...smh

I think coaches will be patient to see how it plays out. If July is canceled, I would expect some movement. If a possible fall viewing is canceled too, there will be frantic movement and guessing on both sides, which will lead to more transfers later sadly.

Having relationships with college coaches can help at this time if you have been honest with them over the years and not sold them a bill of goods. Easier to take a chance on something where you have a pretty good idea of what you’re getting vs totally rolling the dice

I also think this is all why you see so many 2021s committing early.

I have a hard time seeing any team sports going forward until Spring 2021. Team practices and games are "accelerators" just like nursing homes, prisons, meat packing plants, etc. Even if you limit spectators, just the inclusion of players, coaches, and officials gives you a lot of people intermingling then spreading back out to their communities.

Right now, even under strict shelter in place rules, the new case numbers are not dropping significantly. I think that after we start opening up next week, the numbers are going to increase. With another bump in the Fall when the usual flu season starts.

Finally, even if the state and local rules ease up, will prudent operators really want to run teams, leagues and tournaments? Good luck establishing and enforcing restrictions and protecting yourself against liability when someone gets sick. Will insurance even be available for youth sports? Will cautious parents risk the health of their kids and families?

I think this thing is going to last a lot longer than people are hoping.

Unfortunately, I think you may be right. I am hoping that you're wrong.

seems like there have been plenty of kids getting offers and committing during this time. Coaches are still working. The process may have changed, but they still rely on these kids for job security, they are not going to just sit on their hands and wait. They are doing the best they can with the resources they have

I agree. But I would guess to say that 20-30% of the offers for a senior class are out prior to that final spring/summer. Several coaches of the D2 and NAIA level are still finalizing 2020s. Most college coaches want to see what that player has done from last summer, through season to this summer before putting forth an offer. So while some offers are out and some commitments are done, the other 70% of 2021s are standing by waiting to showcase themselves.

There is no question they are working. They are calling, texting, watching films of kids, etc. But the offers going forward are going to slow to a trickle this summer or else coaches will have to extend offers without being as certain about players as they would like to be with the unavailability to watch them live.

The other part to consider is that there are over 300 current college players in the transfer portal. This year more than most may see college coaches taking transfers instead of H.S. players they haven't seen play during the summer. This is a difficult time for those players that were trying to land an offer, or hoping to secure multiple offers this summer.

While in the past that may have been true, I don't know that your percentages are accurate. I know of many kids that have gotten offers in the last 3 weeks.

Agree. And it’s over 500 in the portal. Crazy.

I agree. But I think you would find most of those offers are off of solid, first hand evals this past summer and school season and not off of film or sight unseen
