Seems odd that in NCS, we have more teams that are trying to go independent than most sections. Doesn't it seem logical to make a power league, similar to WCAL in CCS? People say it'll never work cause of geography...but SI, SH having to travel to the south bay isn't a walk in the park, yet they make it work. I can only assume that it's a pain in the ass to try to schedule 26 games, especially from January to February. Why not make a power league or ECAL?

They could also have an open division like CCS. Just seems like it would be less hassle. Thoughts?

The SJS should have one too
1) SMS
2) Modesto Christian
3) Folsom
4) McClatchy
5) Antelope
6) Sac High
7) Elkgrove
8) Granite Bay
9) Oak Ridge
10) Del Ore

These team are competitive in every sport and you can make a north and south SJS power leaage

The WCAL is not a power league. It was created out of the old CAL in 1967. There are power leagues in CCS, like the upper divisions for both the DeAnza league and the WBAL. But the WCAL is a bad example. It may be the strongest girls' basketball league in NorCal but, technically, it's not a power league in the strict sense of the term. By the way, back in the day, O'Dowd, St. Joseph's and Marin Catholic were all part of the old CAL.

A major issue in the Bay Area is traffic, which translates to getting kids out of school earlier and earlier. If buses are used to transport basketball, say, then two (or three) teams are usually required to be on the same bus, meaning everyone leaves school early for that 4 p.m. game and unless the parents come, everyone stays until the varsity game is over at 8:30 or so.

And with longer distances, parents are less likely to come.

This is an even bigger issue playing soccer on unlighted fields in the winter, as the games have to start at 3 p.m., which means leaving school as early as 1 p.m.

Geographical considerations also include the cost of transport, because renting buses and vans is not cheap -- and you can't ask parents to carpool to somewhere 40 miles, or 90 minutes, away.

Going independent should be for teams that have no competitive games whatsoever in their own league with no chance of getting competitive in future years.

Some of the teams mentioned above don't apply to that criteria.

exactly, even a half decade of continued success isn't really enough to justify. Very shortsighted view

Is this a list of schools trying or that are independent? Carondelet is modified as they play a reduced schedule and still are included in all league awards. Only St. Mary's Stockton and Brookside are completely independent.

The day s of Brookside being great or even good is over. The school is going back to the way it was before Coach K got there. Coach K And Pico made the program among the best. I was prove to be true that you can't hire coaches to replace great coaches.

I heard they may not have a team this year. unfortunate cause they've had a great ride the last few years!

WCAL schools have been doing it for years...SF to SJ is no walk in the park! I don't think it's as big as an issue..maybe Vallejo to Oakland, but it's no worse than downtown SF to Mitty...

You're right about the WCAL, of course, but that private school league is committed to athletics in a way that most schools and potential leagues are not.

You have to be willing to sacrifice classroom time, budget money and student time in order to make a league like that work.
