Ranked #1 in the state Division 5 rankings, University of SF travels to Menlo School to take on Menlo’s tops-in-state D4 team. Each team has just one loss and have had very similar results vs. common opponents...

Gorgeous campus here at Menlo, fairly reeking of money... Real nice almost-new gym.

The MaxPreps rankings favor Menlo, but not by all that much.

I have seen Menlo play, back in December... Too many games have passes since... I don’t remember much other than that they won.

All I know about University is their reputation as running, passing, 3-bombing fools...

Should be a fun one...

Early on, Menlo is out-athleting University bigtime... 19-8 late in first q

Joe Foley, Menlo PG, is completely legit! He’s a senior, I wonder what colleges are looking at this kid...

Halftime... 36-24 Menlo. University fought their way back to 28-20, but Menlo fended that run off nicely.

Only hole in Foley’s game so far is his jumper... Two really bad misses on the only two outside shots I remember seeing him take. Someone nearby said he was “shooting on his way down”, and I believe that... See if he corrects that for the 2nd half... Even if he doesn’t, a little time with a shooting coach can help up the road...

Other players very much worth mention are #11 on University, Max Fried... And #11 on Menlo, soph Cole Kastner.

University taking another run at it... 58-49 with less that 2 minutes left. Probably too late, but ya never know...

Yup, too late. Watching Foley go all Curly Neal on ‘em.... 64-54 Menlo, 26secs left

68-57 final... Good game, both teams will be very tough in the playoffs.

Menlo, with Foley running the show, was in control throughout. He makes playing PG look like a walk in the park. Quick. Decisive. Efficient. Cool under pressure. One of the very best PG's in the Bay Area for sure. Combine him with two 6-7 posts and enough other guys and Menlo is the real deal. CCS Open Division and then a NorCal berth of some kind. He's headed to Lehigh when he's done at the pricey Atherton campus. This is probably Menlo's best team since John Paye (a future Stanford/Niner QB) was directing the offense 35 years ago.

Wow... Hadn't heard that name in YEARS! I'm pretty sure Paye was the QB of the super-powered Menlo football teams I remember, the ones that ran/passed thru everyone, including my Berean Christian Eagles. They seemed to get about 8-10 TD's a game with that run 'n shoot offense...

Foley went for 28 digits and made it look effortless. He's a pass-first PG who can light it up when needed.

You are correct. Paye was a two-sport start at Stanford, starting at QB and PG. You don't see that much anymore at the Division I level.

The lighting in the Menlo gym is perfect. Best I have ever seen. Don't know if you noticed the volleyball net and referee stand that are high above the basketball court. Push a button and they come down to the floor.

However, in case North Korea does happen to launch a missile or two at the Bay Area, the best gym of all is on the campus of Crystal Springs-Uplands in Hillsborough. Why? Because it's located two deep floors underground. Hello, perfect bomb shelter.
