We are starting to hear them. These would be upcoming seniors who need a football season to display their wares for college recruiters (probably outside the strict virus-induced shutdown rules in California). Does anyone have any confirmed transfers at this delicate juncture?

Are there district offices open? It seems weird to see kids post transfers on social media before they can even get into school. It would seem if D.O.'s are closed, then undue influence would had to have took place....shocker

Lol. All I am asking is if D.O. and schools are opened to release the student?

It's very likely that undue influence happens, but its proving it that matters, and that's the rub.

I am pretty sure you can't coach your kids outside of covid approved drills on campus during approved times, but guess what, look at social media bc it's going on at parks around the city.

Many Public School Districts (Ca) are open, operating Online and enrollment transactions are currently taking place.

Why not offer a gap year to any student that either can't get consistent access to online school, feels they are receiving a subpar education in an online environment or doesn't want to miss their entire senior year of sports? Actually, it should be a mandatory option.

Do we include drama, band, choir, cheerleading, yearbook, etc. in the gap year notion? Or are sports in a separate category somehow?

I have one at DO and have heard nothing about transfers. They plan to start school with kids in class so offices are probably at least virtually open.

Then those eighth grade holdbacks will turn 20 their “senior year.” Ha!

And there is a big physical difference between a 17 year old and 19 for that matter. (What we are seeing today). All those that gamed the system the clock could run out on you.... if you are young for the grade might not be a bad option.

Think you should keep the same age restrictions CIF already has in place

"Age Limitations
No student whose nineteenth (19) birthday is attained prior to June 15 of the prior school year shall participate or practice on any CIFteam. A student whose 19th birthday is on June 14 or before is ineligible.”

Some of us have been here > 5-10 years. I don’t blame you for not knowing some history.
Plenty of chat on NCP 1.0, (Streak is 2.0) about kids who turn 17 fall of senior year- legit- competing against schools who take the “hold backs” whose families did so purely for athletic reasons.
But that’s old news and stale.

Ok but I’m not sure how that relates to offering a gap year during a pandemic

I personally like the idea of having a gap year. I understand kids would still need some sort of virtual school or something. The virtual school we witnessed last year was horrible and as far as the public schools go I don’t see it getting much better. These kids should not be forced to move forward with this type of education and give up their athletic eligibility. Yes we keep the CIF age rule.
The ripple effect is going to be strange as well with some colleges playing and others not. How will the NCAA deal with this?

A gap yr just for athletes? What do we do with the incoming 8th graders? Do we now have 5 grade levels, ages 14-19? The ripple effects are not just with hs sports. Who knows what the future of hs and youth sports looks like.

Sometimes you just roll with cards that are delt. Times are lousy and this is a bummer but the clock never stops. It’s part of life. Some kids graduate college during recessions and have a brutal time finding employment. No fault of theirs. Timing.....

On completely different subject I think this has totally reset athletics and pro sports will never see the money that athletes garnered the last decade.
Parents rethinking the ridiculous amounts of money poured out for travel teams/training etc.

Priorities change.

Declining attendance
Smaller stadiums
Many college programs will be lost leading to less kids chasing that dream which all trickles down.

I know so many people who have gotten so disgusted by lack of “reality” with athletes today and really have lost interest in supporting them. Growing up the distance between a pro player and reg joe was minor. Heck I would see Joe and Jennifer Montana in mass. Not a big deal.

Sports needed a reset. This is a little harsh and I feel for our youth. But it’s like an asset bubble in real estate. Got to big...

No, not just athletes...from the original suggestion "Why not offer a gap year to any student that either can't get consistent access to online school, feels they are receiving a subpar education in an online environment or doesn't want to miss their entire senior year of sports?" It would be the commonplace East Coast equivalent of reclassifying. Still just 4 grades. Repercussions or ripple effects either way.

The gap year would be a choice for everyone. How are 2nd and 3rd graders supposed to get the skills they need to move forward without hands on parents? The virtual school does not work for most kids and parents.

I think it's fair to allow any students to stay back. I just don't think its realistic.

A gap year will never happen unless everything is really falling a part in the classroom and outside of it. I consider one life lost is too many. The other thing is the private’s who pay a ton of money would have pay for another year.

Honestly learning from home is a horrible way to learn especially for the elementary children. How are their parents going to work and take care of their children.

I looked at Saint Francis High Schools website and they will be teaching kids in the classroom this fall. It did not mention sports. I’m not sure if the rest of the WCAL is going to have kids in the classroom.

The only way we can play football this year is by either having a vaccine or a cure or of some type of mitigation. There are some very promising medication’s out there right now.

Right now if one player test’s positive after a game then both teams will sit for 14 days.

In a perfect world we could all get one of those 15 minute testing machines. But the best we can do is take everyone’s temperature before they hit the field. In addition to this I believe that there is a 4 to 6 day test that athletes can take each week.

The gap year should be an option. The private schools have money and resources to make things a little better. If you are happy with the education your child is getting then fine. As far as public schools go I will be surprised if they happen at all. If they do it will not be full time, so how are kids supposed to move on to the next grade?
This is a football forum and I want football as bad as anyone but it is not going to happen. This effects more than seniors. We are talking about 4 grades of kids who loose a quarter of their football careers.
I understand this won’t happen but we need to start thinking outside the box until there is a vaccine readily available.

I hate to admit it, or maybe better described, don't want to admit, but you're likely spot on. We have one entering senior year who plays and will be impacted likely. He has options but losing out on the most important year of playing youth sports, is brutal.

The business of youth sports will take a hit for sure....and maybe it should. I am less certain about college just because it is the economic engine of nearly every collegiate sports program.

so when they get there, whole family move, and then COVID shuts it down...then what? People need to stay put IMO... UNLESS seniors may need more film. But, if they are D1 level they probably have JR and Soph season film.... only top tier programs affected by this...

From some of the transfers I’ve seen listed, it is usually the kid heading off to another state. Usually have family or friends they are staying with and parents are staying behind. Reality is everyone will likely be shut down in the fall it’s just taking some
longer to come to that reality.

if your staying with another family member most states have a sit out period. Why miss games.

I really don’t know and with the Covid rules I could see states waving any sit out. The season in the states still on are already being shortened. Jake Garcia is transferring to Valdosta, that’s huge. Figure he wound have checked and got some word on his eligibility prior.

I still think nationally the season will get pushed to 2021 if it goes. Still waiting on the MLB domino to fall and season gone. And if it does I just don’t see HS or CFB going in the fall.
