Two defensive backs from John Jay High School's football team are suspended — and could face criminal charges — after they teamed up to blindside a referee at the end of a football game in central Texas this weekend.

The two players were suspended from both the school and the football team after they converged on a back judge near the end of Friday night's game, in an act that was evidently inspired by feelings that the official had made a bad call. The local police department says it's investigating.

Nearly 7 million people have viewed video of the incident, which shows one player sprinting toward and knocking the back judge to the ground — followed closely by the other player, who leveled his helmet as he struck the fallen man.

The incident took place during a game at Marble Falls High School, northwest of Austin; the players under scrutiny are from John Jay High, in San Antonio's large Northside Independent School District.

I'm going to bet that those kids get banned from playing football again, at a minimum...First video I've seen with actual HS players pulling this crap off.

Youtube is littered with videos of parents and coaches (mostly youth/pre-HS level) beating up on refs....

Expulsion from the school, suspension from all sports and prosecution are what is called for. These kids are at an age they should be held accountable. They perpetrated a violent crime. If they already don't have a record, these kids should be sent to a prison for a week (alla scared straight) to think about what their life will be like if they don't change. Not to mention that their parents might be subject to civil litigation. Hopefully the referee doesn't have an injury that will impact him the rest of his life.

Criminal action, should be treated as such. Lucky the back judge wasn't seriously injured.

Assault with a deadly weapon on the second kid. He went to spear a defenseless human being with his helmet with intent to harm.

Besides the bad calls and the 2 other players being ejected before this incident, rumor has it from a report I heard on the radio is that the incident was "race" induced. Apparently, the back judge was using the "N" word towards the players. Still, this is not the correct action to use as a response. But, if folks follow and agree with some of the movements by certain groups that are going on today, there might be a different opinion. Sad!

Click here for report sharing this incident may have been "race" induced.

Report above also shares that an assistant coach suggested the action by these 2 players. Anticipate his career as a coach has come to an end, as well.

Leading with the helmet to the back of the head/neck/spine easily could have fractured that ref's back, not to mentioned the follow up spear. Both of those clowns should be charged with assault.

Unfortunately the race card is the only thing those kids can claim that might work in their favor. Just last season a JV coach in the East Bay put his hands on a opposing player during a game on a play to his sideline. I saw it on tape it was so inappropriate it's amazing that clown still has his job. But the coach claimed the player used the "N word" at him so everybody backed off. Even then two wrongs don't make a right and adults need to lead by example... I'm interested in seeing clips from the Texas game to see these "bad" calls from the ref

This is a sad an unfortunate incident. The coach is more guilty if in fact he instructed kids to act that way. The kids while guilty lets remember are 16-17 yr olds who dont always think before they act in many situations, especially when given the okay from an adult. Lastly I hope the official was not injured however he is not clear of fault if in fact was making racial slurs.

Obviously mishandled by kids but nonetheless a situation created by possibly an inappropriate official. Still more to learn but in my opinion blame all around on this one. Like I said,sad....not what high school football is all about

Sounds like they are suspended from school and sports pending an investigation. The revered Al Sharpton has been seen on the river walk recently.
