Something that seems to becoming more and more common each year is taking summer or fall tournaments and utilizing them as officiating camps at the same time. This weekend for instance at CRC you had a bunch of top flight teams playing and being officiated by literal first time junior high/ 9th grade level officials. It was embarrassing to watch not just for the teams but throwing these beginning refs out into elite varsity games isn’t doing them any favors either. I’m surprised these teams agree to pay a large entry fee which should be going to cover official costs. So CRC doesn’t have to pay for officials and whoever is running the ref camp is making 100-200 of each ref to come out and learn.

Officials get paid bupkus. If your doing it, your doing it because you love the game.

$25/game to get yelled at by parents and coaches…….

It’s why my criticism of refs completely changed after I coached for one season.

But I will say this, refs around the country are much better than in CA. I think NC had the best refs and there were also a ton of good ones used during Border League in Vegas and other tournaments we played at Bishop Gorman.

Overall, until refs are paid better we will continue to get these kids who think reffing 4-5 games for $100-$125 bucks is good money.

This is nothing new. Summer/Fall tournaments have been used as training for officials. But if it is a high level tournament should not be used for training 1st time officials. Not right for them or the teams.
