I was at tonight's first round of the VonToure Classic, the first night of my weekend tour of three holiday tournaments.
Game 1 was Fairfield v. Clayton Valley Charter, won in double OT by CV. Not the prettiest game to watch, as a matter of fact rather ugly. Exciting, though... My guess is CV has some help coming when their football players finish up. Fairfield is pretty athletic, and will get some wins eventually... For now they are 0-5, but four of those losses were by 3 or fewer.
Game 2 was Serra of San Mateo v. James Logan. Serra established their will pretty early and won by about 20. Their sophomore big-man has ability, but he's got a long way to go. He is HUGE, though...
Game 3 was DLS v. Deer Valley. The Spartans toyed with their overmatched opponent, probably using only a very small chunk of the plays and strategies in the new system being put in place by their new coach. They won by 25 while emptying their entire bench in much of the last 10 minutes. It'll be interesting to see what they've got when challenged. I was talking to a guy that played a little college hoop and is a friend of one of the new DLS assistant coaches, and this guy said that DLS was going to run a lot more tempo.
Game 4 was Jesuit of Dallas v. St. Patrick's St. Vincent's. This one was an exciting and well-played game, close through three quarters before Jesuit pulled away late to win by about 10. I have an idea St Pat's/Vince could make a bit of noise later on in Div. 4 NCS.
The semi's will be DLS v. CV Charter and Serra v. Jesuit-Dallas.
My predictions: DLS by over 20 and Serra by 10. DLS should win the final comfortably.
For me, it's on to Gridley tomorrow before I go to Carmichael for the Jesuit tourney on Saturday.
