The welcome opening of the WCAL kicks off this weekend - who do you got? Also, your picks for order of finish.
Hoping our friend, Rmbr26, can provide his excellent insight and assessment for the 2021 campaign.
Week 1 WCAL Picks:
Friday Night - 7pm

Riordan @ Bellarmine
Valley Christian
@ Sacred Heart Cathedral (Kezar)
St. Ignatius @ St. Francis
Saturday - 1pm
Serra
@ Mitty

Predicted Order of Finish:
  1. Serra
  2. St. Francis
  3. Valley Christian
  4. Bellarmine
  5. St. Ignatius
  6. Riordan
  7. SHC
  8. Mitty

That SI-SF matchup could possibly be an upset. I think it wouldve been a likely upset if not for the extra week. SF coming off the upset of the century, the kids heads are high, feelin' themselves, cant possibly duplicate the energy/effort vs SI. The bye week definitely helps them reset and forget about the DLS win.

Predicted Order of Finish:
  1. Serra
  2. St. Francis
  3. Valley Christian
  4. Bellarmine
  5. St. Ignatius
  6. Riordan
  7. SHC
  8. Mitty
That's more or less how it seems to be going right now. But my take on the finish is the way:
1. Serra (A battle for #1)
2. St. Francis (A battle for #1)
3. Bellarmine (assuming they keep improving their duel offense)
4. Valley Christian (Assuming they can stay heathy)
5. St. Ignatius
6. Riordan
7. Mitty
8. Sacred Heart Cathedral

Judging Riordan is tough. The Crusaders (or the Gaels as today's Chronicle called them) have played a schedule that can only be called less than challenging.

I was disappointed when I watched SI against St. Mary's. Thought it might be a Top 5, but it is more of a Top 4 (and a very good Top 4).

I would say Serra/St. Francis is in Tier 1 and Bellarmine/VC are in Tier 2

Somehow, I don't think St. Francis steamrolling SI will be an "upset".

If Riordan Beats SHC and Mitty could they make the playoffs at 5-5? I am an NCS guy so I'm am slightly confused on how the playoff system works now in the CCS. SHC scheduled tough and due to that they could be 0-10 maybe 2-8 at best.

I don't know if Pal Booster will be posting the CCS race to playoffs this year. His posts were highly informative about the CCS playoff system. It is true that the CCS playoff criteria is as complicated as it appears. But truthfully, it is more fair than some other sectional playoff systems. By fair, I mean teams getting recognized for their strength of schedule and not simply their win'/loss record alone. CCS allows 33 automatic placements via league standing and 7 more teams according to CCS powerpoints. After all 40 teams are selected for playoffs, these 40 teams are allocated to divisions according to their powerpoints. The CCS powerpoints are generated by wins, level of those wins (CCS designated level or Calpreps levels) and Calpreps rankings. Also, no league can have more than 6 representatives in the playoffs.

Riordan could theorically make the playoffs if they beat Mitty and SHC and place at least 6th in WCAL. But they would need enough CCS powerpoints to get into the remaining 7 at-large playoff slots. I haven't worked out their numbers to know if it is even possible.

PS - I did a quick glance at the Riordan schedule and I would be very surprised if they made the playoffs with a 5-5 record. The three pre-season teams on the Riordan schedule will most likely be considered B league teams if their current CCS rating holds true throughout the rest of the season.

I agree, PALBooster, does a great job in presenting the CCS Playoff picture. So many combinations and permutations...but at the end of the day winning solves all problems. Great to see CCS teams other than the WCAL in the NorCal rankings. I can't recall in recent history when the CCS was this strong.

Palma 47 - Mitty 0
Palma 14 - SHC 7
Mitty beats Mountain View; Mountain View beats Sacred Heart Prep; Sacred Heart Prep beats SHC.

I'm not entirely sure what to make of any of those teams.

But, I do agree with guess of Bellarmine at #3.

1. Serra/SF
2. Serra/SF
3. VC
4. The Bells are back. Would not be surprised if they were 3.
5. SH has more talent than the remaining teams
6. SI can end up 5 or 7
7. Riordon possible 6
8. Mitty likely last

there are always upsets

SHC needs more experience at the OL. They have the tools on offense, they just need some blockers.

I just did a double take on Riordan’s Varsity roster in MaxPreps as it has 2 prominent basketball players in King Wilhite and Quinton Bundage as WR/DBs. Isaiah Chala also back at DE. Not sure how much football experience they have, but definitely brings much needed speed, athleticism and depth to the Crusaders. SHC also has the talented sr hoops guard Ray John Spears back on the gridiron. Rare to see multi sport athletes these days.

Central Catholic 41-27 over St. Mary's
St. Mary's 38-10 over St. Ignatius
Bells 28-21 over Central Catholic

Riordan fans optimistic about Crusaders' 3-0 record and hoping to have a shot at Bells on their home turf...
Crusaders & fans - Be Prepared! [for long bus ride home....]

SHC may have some tools on offense but they need to be organized, prepared and utilized in an offense that benefits them to the max, with the ball in the hands of the best players (including QB). What we have seen during recent weeks has been discouraging to say the least. Lots of athletic ability going to waste. Maybe this will be changed during the bye week. We'll see.

Nice opening drive by SHC to lead VC by 7-0 and just recovered a VC fumble - VC looking anything but impressive so far .. Irish looking like they're in it so far..

A bit of surprise so far as VC has their hands full with SHC Irish, Bells seem to be overwhelming Crusaders & SF vs SI about as expected.

Just catching up as watching multiple games. SHC in huge surprise leading VC in 4th.
Wow - SHC Irish just go up by another TD over VC - Shocking turn of events!

Not sure but Bells-Riordan game went off-line and looked like went to running clock at 35-0 Bells..

What a heart-break for SHC to lose like that at end of game vs VC.
Irish looked to have out-played VC and all for naught as Jurion Dickey catches pass & runs thru the SHC defense for winning TD with time running out - Unbelievable!

SH might be the best 0-4 team in history! Outside of the record, you can see these kids scrap and claw all 48 minutes. With each game, you see ironing out of some wrinkles.

For instance, this VC game, they made the adjustment to have 1 QB and QB take the snaps from shotgun vs pistol. Pistol works if you have the threat of a run game + above average run blocking. SH doesnt have a reliable runner from the RB position or quite the OL that wins the line of scrimmage. Shotgun actually gave Spears more time (1-2 seconds more) before line would collapse from the rush.

It took a 4 star D1 star's might and will to win this game. There is no shame to be beat that way. SH was one first down away from winning the game.

Honestly, offensively, there were three adjustments I wouldve made after the 0-3 start, and they already figured out one which was go to shotgun. They sort of have one foot in with adjustment #2 and they havent figured out what #3 is.

Anyone know if the Serra-Mitty game will be streamed today?

Prediction:
  1. St. Francis
  2. Serra
  3. Valley Christian
  4. Bellarmine
  5. Sacred Heart
  6. St. Ignatius
  7. Riordan
  8. Mitty
