2-A State Bowl: Serra vs. Sierra Canyon

Bobby Cole is untouched up the middle in going for a 80 yard TD run on the second offensive play for Sierra Canyon.

Sierra Canyon up quick 14-0. Serra better slow down RB Cole or its gonna be a LONG day..

Long run by Kendrick sets up a 14 yard touchdown run for Nunn. SC blitzed, which left no one downfield to pick up Nunn. Good block on the outside too.

14-6 SC with 5 minutes left in Q1

Sierra Canyon leads 14-6 with eight minutes left in Q2. Defenses are starting to settle in a little. Serra doing a much better job on Cole after those first two carries.

Nunn finds Kendrick for a 37 yard screen pass on 3rd and 10. Serra gets the points back on a two point try pass from 5 to 21.

14-14 tie with 554 left in the first half

Serra grabs its first lead of the day on a 35 yard pass from Nunn to Park down the right seam.

Padres lead 20-14 with 343 left in Q2

Sophomore JJ Hernandez takes the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown as Sierra Canyon regains the lead at 21-20.

Outside of two plays (80 yard TD run, 95 yard KO return), Serra has really controlled this game

And yet they are losing. So far all three games have had a familiar ring to them

HS kicker should be able to try a 44 yarder with 4 seconds left rather than go for it on 4th and 20.

Serra threatened at the end of the half and even had a touchdown wiped out by penalty, but that flag and a sack pushed them out of scoring range.

Sierra Canyon leads 21-20 at halftime.

I'm ok with no field goal there. That is a pretty long kick at the prep level (in cold weather too) and with a player like Nunn handling the ball, your chances are better than most in that situation.

Serra takes the first drive of the second half 62 yards capped by a 2 yard TD run from Leki Nunn.

Nunn puts so much pressure on a defense as seen on that drive as a runner, threat to run and thrower.

If you are watching the game the announcers pointed out that Serra is using a freshman as their kicker. In early games Serra had no kicker who could make a PAT consistently & so brought up a 14-year old off the frosh team. As it is he missed the 3 TD PAT which has Serra behind by a point.
So no, a 44-yard FG try was out of the question.

I realize that, but as was discussed in last night's game, you have to be able to take advantage of opportunities when they are there. A high school the size of Serra should have plenty of soccer players that can make a kick like that and not have to rely on an inexperienced freshman in a state champion game. I'm not questioning Walsh's decision at that point, as his options were limited.

Sierra Canyon back in front up 28-27 with 5 minutes left in Q3. Serra on the wrong side of the point after tries.

Sierra Canyon takes more than six minutes off the clock after Serra turns it over on downs at SC's 20 yard line. Trailblazers picked up four third downs on that scoring drive.

35-27 SC with 815 left in Q4

Serra got within 35-33 on a TD catch by Kendrick (off another tipped ball), but a failed two point conversion left the Padres trailing. Pass was completed, but errant throw pushed the receiver out of bounds.

SC has the ball in the red zone with 322 left

Sierra Canyon now up two possessions on Serra (42-33) with three minutes left after the fourth TD run from Bobby Cole.

Serra burned their three timeouts on that last drive

Took Serra 52 seconds to respond with a short Nunn TD run. Sierra Canyon leads 42-40 with 206 left.

Onside kick coming up

Sierra Canyon recovers the onside and will try to milk the rest of the clock

Wild finish and near epic collapse by Sierra Canyon but the Trailblazers get their second state title with a 42-40 win over Serra.

Serra defense just wasn't there today. Not looking good for NorCal in Sacramento this weekend.

On play near end with Sierra Canyon QB throwing ball up to celebrate - the refs said Serra had an illegal substitution and the SC players onto the field was unsportsmanlike penalty and the 2 offset each other. What about the lineman who caught the ball thrown up in the air - wasn't he an illegal receiver?
If so that would've given Serra one more play at around the 30. Anyone else catch that?

0-3 Definitely not a good start to the bowls for NorCal, but this is the first time since this bowl series has started that we have had so many back to back games that were this evenly matched. All 3 could have gone either way, unfortunately in the end NorCal is still 0-3 despite how evenly matched they have been to their SoCal opponents.

Honestly thought the kid who caught it was #16, but I already deleted it from DVR so I am not sure. If Pawlawski said a lineman caught it then I'd bet it was probably a receiver or back who caught it.

Doesn't matter, if your banking on a call from the refs to give you a shot you don't deserve it. Had plenty of game to make plays to change the result and didn't get it done.

Do coaches at the high school level not realize special teams are a huge part of the game. Work on them (all year). Seems to possibly be the difference in a championship for a few teams this weekend. There's 3 parts to the game and if you are only good at 2/3 you might be in trouble against good opponents.

Yep, 1 FG can make a huge difference in games like these. I saw the DLS kicker boot a 47 yarder against Cal High and it looked effortless.

No Serra had plenty of opportunities, was just wondering if refs missed something on that one. Serra had the 1 TD wiped out by a penalty and then the 2 point conversion when the WR stepped on the end zone back line. In the end it was 2 missed PAT's that was the difference as Serra was entirely capable of winning this game. I think maybe Coach Walsh will be looking at soccer players in the off season [PAT's shouldn't cost a team a game in a close one].
Still a great & entertaining season.

The kicks were blocked, he didn't miss them wide or short. That's a line issue, not an issue with the kicker. The frosh kicker was very good this year.

Panda - they replayed the 2nd missed point & it doesn't appear anyone even got close to blocking the PAT kick(?). Why do you think it was blocked when it was a line drive off to the side? Its not like this was the first game Serra missed PATS - yeah first one was clearly blocked & either way a tough way to lose by missed PAT's.
Serra for the first time didn't post stats this season on MaxPreps until just recently and then didn't post complete stats such as PAT's attempted/missed or FG's. In any case the Padres kicking team is def in need of improvement for next season [not blaming the frosh as that had to be a tough position to be put in, but that position needs to be set early in the season if not before].

It was #16 and he came from off the bench to catch the ball.

Well then that kid earned a ring! It will always be something he can tell his grandkids about. The day he came off the bench in the title game and made a catch :)
