Sometimes, there's a confluence of events that works out nicely for everyone. Saturday in San Mateo is a good example. At 11 a.m., San Mateo High, 8-0, will host neighbor and ancient rival Burlingame, 7-2, in the 94th Little Big Game, one of the oldest public school traditional football contests in Northern California. Although the Bearcats are unbeaten, their schedule (they play in the PAL's Lake Division, a C league) has been significantly less challenging than that of the Panthers of the PAL Bay (A) Division. Burlingame has won the last 11 Little Big Games in succession. That's the longest streak by either team in the game's history. Then the day gets even more meaningful in the big picture. At 2:30 p.m., St. Francis of Mountain, 8-0, will face off with Serra, 8-0, on the latter's field four miles to the south. That much-anticipated affair will decide the 2021 WCAL championship. Both teams are rated among the top prep units in California. Weather permitting, both games should generate crowds in excess of 3,000 observers. All four teams will proceed on to Central Coast Section playoffs next week.
