Folsom's Jake Browning -- Gatorade CA player of the year

Congratulations to him, great player,3year starter on a great team.Outstanding season for him and Folsom.

It has been a great career for Browning. Not many players have taken the headlines like he did out of the gate as a sophomore.

Surprised he beat out SJB's qb Rosen, who is the #1 ranked hs qb in the country. What gives here?

What gives is now Folsom might get picked for Open SBG, pitting the Gatorade California POY against Rosen and the CA #1 ranked team, SJB. While we up North get to see a Grant vs. DLS D1 matchup.

No way that's happening, but Browning deserved this award over Rosen

POY ought not be based on rivals recruit rankings (although that seemed to be the case w/ Zach Kline in '11) and Browning is undefeated, has less of a cast around him (a much wider gap last year), and crushes Rosen for a stats/ production perspective. Browning is the most prolific QB in CA history and is about to become the most prolific QB in history nationally.

Congrats to him

This is the 3rd year straight I have read how Folsom is better this year and is good enough to beat DLS. Lets go right down the selection guidelines.
1. Win-Loss record, Equal
2. Strength of schedule
Preseason- DLS average opponent 43.94 (top opponent 54), Folsom average opponent 31.25 (top 54.1)
Advantage DLS

league- DLS avg opponent (including the weakest opponent of the year, out of league Logan) 33.36 Folsom average opponent 29.8
Slight Advantage DLS

Postseason- DLS's SRV (36.5), Cal (41.4), Pittsburg (47.3)
Folsom stagg (-.9), Franklin (36) Tracy (42.9)
Advantage DLS

Head to head- They never played

Common opponents
Both played Del Oro DLS 52-0, Folsom 42-7
Both blowouts- plus point differentials arean't supposed to be looked at
No advantage to DLS or Folsom

Suitability to represent the State in a Bowl Championship with regards to Pursuing
Victory with Honorsm and acceptable standards of sportsmanship
Both teams are more than suitable to represent, neither of these teams has bad ethics or problems.
No advantage to DLS or Folsom.

It is noted that computerized rankings will be used as a guide in the selection process, so my averages and numbers are actually valid in the decision making process.

Score differences ARENT considered, so saying Folsom beat Cathedral by more than DLS beat that east coast team isn't much of an argument.

I don't see any guidlines that say that they look at whether or not a quarterback is Gatorade player of the year.

I don't see any guidlines that says having two good quarterbacks play each other in the open championship as a guideline.

I also don't see ANY advantages to Folsom over DLS per the Selection Guidelines.

Unless they decide to go outside of the guidelines and DLS wins tomorrow, DLS is going to be the Open representative

Cal Preps highest performance rating THIS year (the last 2 years are meaningless):

Folsom: 82.1 (against Cathedral)
DLS: 82.0 (against Byrnes)

A per game performance rating is meaningless.

The rating is DIRECTLY has to do with the score of the game and the guidelines clearly state scores aren't to be used to make a selection.

Even if it was looked at, 82.1 vs 82.0 is a wash

Recruiting stars are one thing performance on the field is another. Browning is well deserving. Look at what he's done. I also think he will be a stellar QB in college. Kilne is at Butte now. So much for the rankings.

2 star Scooby Wright will be taking a flight to NY for the Heisman ceremony.

I'm not saying Folsom would beat DLS...but if there was EVER a year that they had a chance it's this year. Folsom has Huge offensive linemen...especially at the tackle position. 1st year they met Folsom stated 8 sophomores which is incredible by itself. Last year they played without their best FB/Mike LB and best defensive end/starting center. Then their 2nd best LB went down during the game. Again...not claiming that it would have changed the outcome of the game but it definitely HURT Folsom bad. This year I think there's an argument to
Give them the open. Previous years make no difference. Different teams.

What's cool is Browning being able to take advantage of NCAA rules that allow him to sign a financial aid package and enroll at UW for Spring classes. Apparently he graduates at the end of this semester.

DLS played Del Oro without Del Oro's starting Qb and best Rb. You shouldn't use that comparison. Both played against Folsom.

GolfGuy,

How do you think CalPreps gets the ratings you use above? Score differential is used to calculate the calpreps ratings you cite for schedule strength.

Congrats to Mr. Browning! The young man has had a stellar prep career! He put up Tecmo Bowl type numbers! The kid has raised the bar for local qb's.

The bowl criteria involves not looking at scores but also considering computer rankings. The only way to translate this is that they won't look at scores of individual games, but will look at a combine of scores used to create ratings. So one individual score doesn't make the difference, but a persistent margin is looked at.

This makes sense because it protects teams like Del Oro. Both DLS and Folsom probably could have, and would have put up 70+ points against them had the score been used to determine who plays in the open.

The only thing separating DLS and Folsom by the selection guidelines is SOS. Even that would be close to even had Folsom played Grant SJS playoffs.
