So how does Haley Jones stack up against the greatest players to come out of Northern California? And how does she compare, in style, substance and accomplishments?

Here's a quick list of other elite talents (please forgive any I've forgotten) to trigger your memory:

Jacki Gemelos
Erin Buescher
Chelsea Gray
Renee Robinson
Aquira DeCosta
Courtney Paris
Mackenzie Forbes
Afure Jemerigbe
Tierra Rogers
Jayne Appel
Oderah Chidom
Tracy Morris (a homer call, I confess)
Sabrina Ionescu
Aari McDonald
Danielle Robinson
Amanda Lassiter
Brandy Reed

and others I have forgotten -- so help me out.

I hate comparing players like this because we are so quick to take offense and attack someone’s simple opinion. But I do like the topic.

I for one would include Alexis Felts (SHP) to the list of great candidates. Now I will ponder your challenge and maybe dare to share.

Sara James
Mandy Coleman
Gigi Garcia - before ACL

And Sara James might be the best comp, in some ways ...

Niveen Rasheed -- how could I forget? You knew she was going right but it didn't matter.

To this day, I think that Jackie Gemelos is hands down the best player that I've ever seen in Northern California. The kid could shoot, pass, and just had that Jordanesque mentality of taking over a game. It's really too bad that she tore her ACL so many times...what a fun player to watch. That said, Haley is right there in the mix.

Tracy Morris was a hell of a player and no sense in calling yourself a homer. She had the tools BUT what separated her is her damn work ethic. She always outworked people and that made her an even better player.

add:

Vicki Baugh (as good as anybody that ever came out of norcal...knee injuries derailed career)

These 3 all played at the same time in the NCS D4 division...fun times for every other team not named Salesian and St Marys:(...nice section...
Mariya Moore
Gabby Green
Mikayla Cowling

all 3 McDonalds All Americans for 2014

All great additions ... Vicki Baugh played in the WNBA for several years but was never quite the same after a knee injury.

And how I forgot Moore, Green and Cowling is beyond me ...

For me, the "Mount Rushmore" is Haley Jones, Sabrina Ionescu, Jackie Gemelos and Jayne Appel. Last ones off are Courtney Paris and Vicki Baugh.

However, look at this thread: This is a LOT of legitimate elite players out of NorCal in the last 15 or so years.

Too many great ones in Norcal, but a few more missing.
Aisha Hollans- Berkeley High
Mia Fischer- Amador Valley
Charlotte Wiley- Richmond High

There is so many greats to come out of Northern Cali but you don't have a list without Alexis Gray and Devanai Hampton out of Oakland Tech/Cal Bears. There is not a guard on that list could handle Alexis and there definitely not any big's on the list could handle Devanai. Don't forget about Brittany Boyd....the girl can play. Haley is very good and she stacks up against the best of them with her size and skill set.

I like this list...Appel vs. Paris or Baugh? I think Paris was the best out of the three of them-but you can't go wrong with any. She was a walking double double. Great list though! Renee Robinson has to be on this list but not sure who I would take off...love this thread!

Full disclosure: Renee was before I started following the sport so that was why she wasn't a part of my list

More that I can't believe I forgot: Boyd, Gray-Lawson, Hampton.

Courtney Johnson too ...

Green and Cowling, as good of players that they were never really had the drive to be upper echelon types of players. Had they had the work ethic of a T Morris,R Robinson, or even Tiera Rogers, they'd of been even more AMAZING. Both had good careers. D4 was probably one of the better divisions back then too

Erika Hardwick - El Cerrito
Ebony Young- Oakland
Tanda Rucker - Berkeley
Shavaki Jackson-Berkeley
Robin Roberson--Berkeley
Corrie Mizuzawa- Acalanes
Cheri Craddock - Logan

Barb Beainy, a 5-11 point forward from Burlingame. Big West Player of the Year at UCSB in the early 1990s. Late cut by the L.A. Sparks of the WNBA. She was a CCS force just prior to the onset of total section domination by the private/parochials. Her senior year 1988 Burlingame CIF Division III stare champs went 36-2.

A lot of new names added, but still a notable omission of Alex Cowling, Mikayla’s older sister. She was a tough competitor at SPSV leading them to the state championships and left LMU as their all time leading scorer.

That's a great list Clay. I'd also throw in Jamie Redd, who played at ISA in San Francisco. She and Brandy Reed (Balboa) are the two best players I've ever seen from the SF public schools and maybe the two best ever to come out of the SF publics. After high school Jamie was an all-American at U. of Washington and played in the WNBA for three seasons with the Seattle Storm. She was one of 20 players named to the Pac-12 all-century team with the likes of Cheryl Milller, Lisa Leslie, Jennifer Azzi, Cynthia Cooper, and Ann Myers.

And speaking of public school players across the bay Alexis Gray-Lawson (Coach Orlando at O-Hi's daughter) and Devonai Hampton at Oakland Tech were as good of a duo as any I've seen this side of the Paris Twins.

How could I forget Corrie Mizusawa, who I coached?

A story about her: She was never a great scorer, but ran the show for Acalanes and made every player better. In the state title game against Harvard-Westlake, we're down four with 2:30 to go, and she comes down (at Arco) and nails an NBA three -- and she was not a three-point specialist. Then she scored six more points down the stretch, the last nine of the game, and we won going away.

She played at SMC and then at Oregon, but was very frustrated at Oregon because she was ordered not to shoot. She was second in the nation in assists, though, which is pretty good.

Last I heard, she was athletic director at Brandeis, a private school in SF.

I thought of Jamie Redd last night -- another story (sorry):

So we're in NorCals (I'm an assistant at Campo) and ISA is the opponent. I'm there early to set up the gym, etc., and ISA has arrived already. Redd, who was about 5-9 or so, is alone on the court under one basket. Now, we'd scouted one game of hers and knew she was really good, but then ... from a standing start, she jumped up and grabbed the rim with both hands.

Oh my ...

And that was one of the strangest NorCal games ever. Redd was pretty much the whole story for ISA, and she was phenomenal. We had no answer for her ... but they had a small roster, and one girl got hurt early. In the third quarter Redd skied to block a shot but one of her players was between her and shooter. She flattened her teammate en route to the block, and the teammate went out with a concussion.

So they're playing with five, three of them reserves, and literally, we had three players guarding Redd. Still couldn't stop her (she finished with 39).

Eventually some of her teammates fouled out and so did she, and ISA finished a NorCal game with two players on the court.

Chelsey Gray and Afure Jemerigbe was the best duo that I’ve ever seen, both McDonald All-Americans. The same year and National Champions and I believe 2 or 3 state championships as well. I don’t think two players from the same team have ever been on McDonald’s All-American team from the same school the same year , boys or girls.

She was impressive and really just needed someone to inbound the ball to her.

Renee Robinson

Just missed. Vicki Baugh, Jackie Gemelos & Jamie Redd
