Is it my imagination, or is the quality level of these tournaments higher than in a typical year? Are good teams playing more tourneys or are there just more good teams?

Good call. I think it is a little bit of both. Mitty and St. Mary's (which are in a few of these local events) should both be very good this year. Then add in Tech with some of their returners, Acalanes' core getting a year older, Newman looks good again, San Ramon Valley having a good senior class, etc. to name a fiewCould be a good year for NorCal overall.
