The Southern CCS is comprised of the PCAL. It is 28 teams from Monterey Santa Cruz and San Benito counties. This year there are 7 teams that comprise the 4 divisions. The Gabilan receives 4 playoff bids, the Mission 3, the Cypress 1 and the Santa Lucia 1. In most years the 5th place Gabilan and the 2nd place Cypress earn enough points to qualify as an at large. Usually, I do a write up on each team, this year I did not have the time. But here is a quick synopsis.

Predicted order of Finish-

Gabilan(A):
Salinas is the class of the PCAL this year and may have enough to challenge the WCAL powers. Aptos has just a little bit more coming back then the other 2 powers. Santa Cruz should have been here the past 3 years, but may be overwhelmed this year.

  • Salinas (CA)
  • Aptos (CA)
  • Palma (Salinas, CA)
  • Hollister (CA)
  • Alisal (Salinas, CA)
  • Alvarez (Salinas, CA)
  • Santa Cruz (CA)
Mission(B+): This division is wide open, any 7 of the teams could easily win. Soquel finished 2nd last year and has some good skill players returning. Carmel should return to the playoffs behind an experienced QB and O line. Monterey may have the best athletes returning but can the new coach bring in discipline?

  • Soquel (CA)
  • Carmel (CA)
  • Monte Vista Christian (Watsonville, CA)
  • Monterey (CA)
  • Seaside (CA)
  • Scotts Valley (CA)
  • North Salinas (Salinas, CA)
Cypress (B-): Like the Mission this division is wide open. KC seems to have the most talent returning. Rancho is a growing school and should continue to improve. Soledad is hoping to find consistency, with another new head coach. And PG, well they just stink as always

  • King City (CA)
  • Rancho San Juan (Salinas, CA)
  • Watsonville (CA)
  • Soledad (CA)
  • Pacific Grove (CA)
  • St. Francis (Watsonville, CA)
  • North Monterey County (Castroville, CA)

Santa Lucia (C): Who did you think I was choosing here? Truth is Gonzales dropped 2 leagues this year so they maybe the best team. SLV has struggled in recent years, but they are a proud tradition rich program. RLS needs to replace one of the better athletes in the whole CCS. Greenfield has huge numbers which is a positive.

  • RLS (Pebble Beach, CA)
  • Gonzales (CA)
  • San Lorenzo Valley (Felton, CA)
  • Greenfield (CA)
  • Harbor (Santa Cruz, CA)
  • Pajaro Valley (Watsonville, CA)
  • Marina (CA)
