Devon Daniels signs with Utah

Prolific Prep guard Devon Daniels is off to Utah. Jojo Zamora (Newark Memorial/Yuba College) also signed with the Utes.

Utah head coach Larry Krystkowiak said of Daniels, "We are extremely excited to have Devon join us next fall. Devon brings in a level of toughness and versatility to our guard spot, both offensively and on the defensive side of the court. He is capable of guarding the opposing team’s best player, which is key in a league where you face several good players night in and night out. From a character standpoint, Devon is a great example of the kind of player we look for and he will be a tremendous asset to the program.”

Sink has led the Wildcats to four of their nine CIF state championships, which is more than any other girls basketball team.

Ben Kone signs with Oregon State

Mitty PF Ben Kone signed with Oregon State on Wednesday.

Here is what Oregon State head coach Wayne Tinkle said:

“What we saw with Ben is a kid that plays with an incredible amount of intensity and focus on both ends. A lot of emotion, but harnessed not wild, and then we saw what we thought were the things that could be strengths of his like his back to the basket play and the fact that he could step away. He’s a leader, he’s very vocal and talented, and we knew he’s a great kid by the way his mother raised him.

“We think that he’s going to come in and address some issues and some needs in the post and even on the perimeter a little bit and bring a different dynamic. He’s very secure in who he is. He’s going to come in right away and give us everything we are asking and not try to hide himself until he feels like he’s earned it.”

Burlingame beats Menlo Atherton grabs piece of Bay Division crown

By Terry Bernal San Mateo Daily Journal

After 18 years, the Burlingame Panthers’ drought is over.

It was 1997 when the Panthers last captured a Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division championship. And even though this year’s bid looked to be in dire straits after last week’s loss to Sacred Heart Prep, Burlingame bounced back in Friday’s Bay Division finale with a 14-0 victory over Menlo-Atherton at Umland Stadium.

With the win, the Panthers (4-1 in PAL Bay, 8-1 overall) close the season in a three-way co-championship with Sacred Heart Prep and Menlo-Atherton. For Burlingame head coach John Philipopoulos, the co-championship is just as sweet as a solo deal.

“In my mind, the way these kids have played all year, they’re champions,” Philipopoulos said.

It was certainly a crowning achievement for the Burlingame defense, which entered into play Friday having given up an average of 23 points per game through four previous Bay Division matchups. But, for all the big-number rushing performances M-A (4-1, 5-4) has posted this season, the Panthers held the Bears to just 97 team rushing yards Friday.

“Our defense has been the backbone all season long and tonight was no different,” Philipopoulos said.

Not that the Bears didn’t have their chances. They closed the first half with two possessions inside the red zone, but were denied both times by a Panthers defensive line that seemed to derive power from having its back up against the wall.

The goal-line stand at the end of the first half will certainly be spotlighted as one of the highlights of Burlingame’s season. Facing second-and-goal from the 10, the Bears advanced the ball to the Burlingame 1-yard line on a 9-yard run by the PAL Bay Division’s second leading rusher Jordan Mims.

But the Panthers defense was up to the task to keep M-A from crossing the goal line on the following two plays.

Burlingame senior linebacker Will Costelli got in on the third-down stop on a dive play to Mims. Then on fourth down, defensive tackles Alex Furr and Andrew Friedeberg walled out fullback Stavro Papadakis with an assist from defensive back Cole Friedlander.

Costelli, a third-year varsity player, said the stand is tops on his all-time highlight reel.

“For me, it’s got to be No. 1,” Burlingame Costelli said. “That was huge.”
Furr concurred. “By far the best,” Furr said.

The stop sent the Panthers into the halftime locker room up 7-0. The Panthers’ offense may not have put up a spectacular performance — running back Laipeli Palu managed a game-high of 95 yards on 23 carries — but they controlled the tempo of the game, and grinded out two gutsy scoring drives.

“That’s what we do,” Philipopoulos said. “We run the ball, try to control the clock and keep them on the sidelines.”

Burlingame dominated time of possession in the game at 27:10, and really hit the breaks in the second half after going up by two scores.

“They were able to run the ball consistently enough and they beat us up with their front eight on defense,” M-A head coach Adhir Ravipati said.

The Panthers got on the board in the first quarter on a 10-play, 52-yard drive using a three-prong running attack with a strong finish from senior Joevani Garcia. The 5-7 senior pounded the ball across the goal line with a 2-yard sweep around the right side to stake Burlingame to a 7-0 lead.

Then on their first possession of the second half, the Panthers trekked even further for an eight-play, 84-yard scoring drive. M-A seemed like it was finally gathering momentum, keeping the Burlingame rush in check and forcing the Panthers into a third-and-12 look from their own 37-yard line. But quarterback Cam Kelaita peeled off a long, towering pass down the left side to senior Cooper Gindraux, who outleapt the M-A cornerback to make the reception 20 yards shy of the end zone; the stealthy receiver then broke a tackle and juked around the M-A safety for the score.

The Burlingame defense then stuck M-A to two consecutive three-and-outs. The Bears’ next first down didn’t come until after Burlingame maintained a drive that ate up more than half of the fourth quarter. By the time M-A got the ball back with 5:55 in the game, quarterback Miles Conrad led his team downfield with completions of 13, 16, 5 and 3 yards. But then on third-and-10 from the Burlingame 27-yard line, Conrad forced a pass into the middle that turned into a backbreaking interception by Burlingame senior Vinny Ferrari.

“We tried to get some momentum and confidence and we just didn’t,” Ravipati said.

Mims totaled 73 rushing yards on 11 carries to surpass the 1,000-yard plateau in the junior’s first full varsity season.

For Burlingame, the shutout marks its first in PAL Bay Division play since Oct. 12, 2007 when the Panthers battled to a 0-0 tie with Terra Nova. The Panthers’ had one other shutout this season in nonleague play with a 30-0 win over Everett Alvarez. Their last league shutout was in 2013 against archrival San Mateo in PAL Ocean Division play to cap their last overall PAL league title.

Solomon Young signs with Iowa State

In the school's press release, head coach Steve Prohm said of Young, “Solomon provides frontcourt depth because of his physical stature, but he also can step out and shoot the ball at an effective clip that will force opponents to guard. He brings great energy to the court each time he steps out there. We really like his motor and what he can do to help our team.”

Interesting that they list him at 6-foot-6 on the release

Problems with NCS brackets

Who makes up NCS selection committee? Clearly no one from this msg board!! Here are some unexplainable seeding issues and pairings.

D1- hard to mess up cuz lot of teams play each other and its all about who gets to play DLS for championship

D2-I think #10 for American, MVAL champion at 8-2 is low. Granted MVAL not great but they are a league champ with win over Moreau and a quality loss to D1 #11 Dublin. #6Maria Carillo(6-4) #7 Casa Grande (4-6) #8 Pinole(6-4) and #9 Windsor (6-4) all NOT league champs could easily been under American. I think Granada (4-6) getting a #4 is high, certainly over #5 Tennyson (8-2) with only losses to D1 San Leandro in OT and Logan. Granada has a lot of "quality" losses, whatever that worth.

D3 - Campo Analy and Rancho obviously 1-2-3. Odowd at #4 is a joke. At 5-5 with NO quality wins they do not deserve a 4 over #5 Alhambra(6-4) and #6 Petaluma(7-3). Petaluma with a last second lost to Analy should have recd the #4. #7 El Cerritto (5-5) no different than O'dowd with win over Oakland Tech and St Marys loss. You could argue EC wins over Salesian Pinole and Hercules all playoff teams-- are better wins than Castro Valley and Berkeley--both out and an OT win over D4 #12 Encinal for Odowd.

D4- Hard to argue top 4, maybe could say Moreau could go #3 over Fortuna(10-0) . #8 Fort Bragg also went 10-0 so why so much more love to Fortuna. What doesnt make sense is pitting FB against St Helena round 1 as well as #7 Justin Siena vs league foe #10 San Marin. If avoidable league opponents should not play in 1st round. would have been easy to switch SanMarin and St Helena. St Marys-Piedmont-Justin had to go in that order, Piedmont beat Justin, common opponent for Piedmont and StMarys was Moreau, Moreua handled StMarys, but blewout Piedmont. Easily could have gone 4-5-6 with Fortuna at 7 or 6-7-8 with Fort bragg at 5.

D5- Looks good, easier with less teams, seedings much more clear .

That my 2 cents!!

River Valley mis-seeded in SJS D3?

What do you all think of this?
maxpreps rankings for seeds 6-13 as follows:
6. manteca (108)
7. Vista Del Lago (250)
8. Vanden (350)
9. C. Brothers (396)
10. Benicia (357)
11. Central Valley (408)
12. River Valley (201)
13. Yuba City (411)

I know Maxpreps isn't the best ranking, but this shows some of the disparity. Seems River Valley should be seeded higher (I have not seen seeds 6-11 play...has anyone else)?

I think River Valley matches up with Placer pretty well....should be an interesting first round game.

Northern Section D3 playoffs

Lassen at 6-4 leap flogged 9-1 Orland to take the #1 seed in the section. Orland's weak schedule has finally caught up to them. Here are the seedings
1. Lassen
2. Orland
3. West Valley
4. Sutter
5. Anderson
6. Corning
7. Oroville
8. Gridley
Sutter and Lassen always schedule up. Sutter plays out of section where as Lassen plays North section D2 teams. Sutter and Lassen also play EC

Peninsula PAL recap

Sacred Heart Prep tops Aragon to take co-title in Bay Division

By Terry Bernal San Mateo Daily Journal

Needing a win in Friday’s Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division finale, Sacred Heart Prep wasted no time.

The Gators (4-1 in PAL Bay, 6-3 overall) came out swinging with 28 first-half points en route to earning a PAL Bay Division co-championship with a 52-21 victory Friday at Aragon (1-4, 5-4). Coupled with Burlingame’s 14-0 win over Menlo-Atherton, SHP finishes in a three-way tie for the Bay crown Division with the Panthers (4-1, 8-1) and the Bears (4-1, 5-4).

Senior running back Lapitu Mahoni paced SHP with five touchdowns, running for 188 yards on 19 carries to maintain the rushing lead in the PAL Bay Division. The Gators maintained a balanced attack with quarterback Mason Randall throwing 6-of-10 for 171 yards and a touchdown, with tight end Andrew Daschbach totaling four receptions for 159 yards.

Aragon quarterback Tanner Nguyen was 21-of-31 passing for 260 yards with two TDs and an interception. Sophomore receiver Gabe Campos was his most reliable target with eight catches for 86 yards.

Terra Nova 52, Sequoia 23

The Tigers (2-3, 4-5) gained 472 yards of total offense to cruise at home over Sequoia (0-5, 1-8). Terra Nova quarterback Joey Pledger was 18-of-26 passing for 261 yards and two touchdowns, while running back Saini Saini scored four times on 11 carries for 129 rushing yards. The Tigers totaled three interceptions, with sophomore Brandon Auelua nabbing two.

PAL Ocean Division

Half Moon Bay 50, King’s Academy 40

In a battle for second place in the PAL Ocean Division, Cougars running back Matt Spigelman erupted for four touchdown runs to lead Half Moon Bay (4-1 in PAL Ocean, 8-1 overall) past The King’s Academy (3-2, 7-2) in a slugfest Friday at Half Moon Bay.

The two teams traded first-quarter scores, with TKA taking a 15-14 advantage by benefit of a two-point conversion. But Spigelman ignited a spree of three consecutive Cougars touchdowns in the second quarter with a 5-yard run. He capped the streak with a 1-yard score, then added touchdown runs of 37 and 20 yards in the second half.

TKA quarterback Michael Johnson Jr. was 10-of-20 passing for 223 yards and three touchdowns. Markweese Smith had five receptions for 108 yards and one TD. Sophomore running back Maurice Washington III had 171 rushing yards on 15 carries with three touchdowns, and added a fourth score on a 50-yard scoring reception.

Hillsdale (5-0, 8-1) wrapped up the Ocean Division title Friday with a 34-14 win over Menlo (2-3, 6-3).

South City 23, Woodisde 14

The Warriors (1-4, 3-6) prevailed in a battle to remain in the PAL Ocean Division next season with the win at Woodside. With the loss, the Wildcats (0-5, 4-5) fall to last place in the Ocean, likely sealing their fate to fall to the PAL Lake Division in 2016. South City tailback Eric Kamelamela rushed for 263 yards and two touchdowns. Woodside quarterback Scudder Stockwell was 12-of-23 passing for 202 yards and an interception.

PAL Lake Division

Jefferson 35, Mills 28

The Grizzlies (4-1 in PAL Lake, 7-2 overall) remain mathematically alive in the PAL Lake Division after Friday’s win at Mills (0-4, 3-6).

Quarterback Damari Cual-Davis returned to action after departing Oct. 30 in the fourth quarter of critical loss to Capuchino. The senior regained his form with 347 total yards, including 268 passing yards. Senior receiver Devin Evans had six catches for 113 yards and two TDs, including a 60-yard bomb. Junior running back David Benjamin Jr. had 13 carries for a team-high 165 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

The victory concludes Jefferson’s Lake Division schedule. They are currently a half game back of first-place Capuchino in the standings, with the Mustangs having one more league game remaining this Friday against last-place Mills. The Mustangs (4-0, 5-4) won at home Friday 40-6 over Carlmont (2-3, 3-6).

San Mateo 36, El Camino 12

The Bearcats (3-2, 5-4) scored in every quarter to roll at home Friday over El Camino (1-4, 1-7). San Mateo totaled 439 yards of offense, riding a dual attack out of the backfield. Junior Anthony Perdomo rushed for 160 yards on 16 carries and two touchdowns, while senior Josh Fakava ran for 130 yards on 18 carries and one touchdown. Bearcats quarterback Austin Salvail was 5-of-8 passing for 119 yards and one interception. Junior Senituli Hafoka paced San Mateo with 11 tackles.

Pitt/Antioch Game

Didn't get nearly enough attention on these threads but what an unbelievable game. I came away thinking that Pittsburg completely threw that game away and major credit to the Pittsburg defense and in turn to Nahjee Harris. Antioch's coaching is completely inept and it shows with Nahjee being asked to carry the ball 40 times when Antioch obviously has talented players on that team. Jordan Parker looked like Deion Sanders against the run and was beat late on a big pass. Beltran had a good game for Antioch on defense and I can't say enough about Charlie Ramirez for Pittsburg. Ramirez was every where for Pittsburg and I see why he is top 50 NorCal recruit at that size. A lot of great football players on the field today. If Montez Thompson holds on to the ball all game then Pittsburg wins by three touchdowns. Antioch will not make it to the NCS title game and even if they do, De La Salle will beat them 63-7
