Losing, especially persistent losing, is hard to handle. South San Francisco is a sad case in point. The once-proud Peninsula program has fallen so far that it cannot field a varsity this fall. The remaining JV team is struggling. It is 0-5. Frustration is palpable. After losing to Sequoia, 17-0, Thursday, the coach, Dion Evans, went on Twitter to vent bitterly. His main blast involved the officiating. He blamed at least some of the refs as being unfair and arrogant. Then Evans, a Black man from the East Bay, laid the lumber. He accused some of them as being marked by what he perceived to be "white supremacy," in other words racist. That's a harsh charge. It's incendiary. He didn't name names. But his Tweets (still available to view as of 10:20 p.m. Friday) have cast a pall over the SSF program and the Peninsula Athletic League in general. Will there be repercussions? Will Evans even return to SSF in 2022? We shall see. It's ugly.
