I was looking at the different AAU teams in the Bay Area and noticed that on Orinda Magic's Black team there is 9 member from Salesian HS out of 12 players listed on their roster. The head coach of this team is Stephen Pezzola who is also Salesian's head coach.

Would this team have an affair advantage when HS season start. They would probably get the opportunity to work out as an all Salesian team. This is not the full Salesian team though as I see members play for Cal Ballaz. Is there a limit to how many kids from the same HS can play one AAU team? I do see some big advantages especially since the coach is HC of both teams.

You don't even have to play under a different name. They changed that rule a while ago ... now, from the day after the Saturday of the state track meet to the first day of fall football practice, there is no supervision over high school programs, in terms of CIF.

After all, how could CIF oversee and enforce any rules during the summer? So they wisely just let schools and coaches do what they thought best.

Good to know Clay. Thanks.

Any reason why Clovis West sometimes plays as Chaos, etc. still?

A lot of teams do it because that's what they did, and then they also use those names in the spring and fall because at that point, you cannot play in events as a high school. You can, however, have an AAU program that exactly mirrors your high school roster with no penalty.

These teams (chaos and cagers, for example) have younger teams too. Also, for AAU/ viewing tournaments I believe you have to be a part of a recognized organization, aka not a school. I'm sure insurance and liability comes into play at some point also.. especially if said team practices at their school.

As I understand them, these are the rules for spring and fall teams (or any offseason teams in any sport that takes place under the jurisdiction of the CIF):

1) The club team must not use the school name
2) The club team cannot use school equipment or uniforms
3) The club team must pay the going rate for use of school facilities.

If a club team forms under the aegis (SAT word of the week) of the AAU, it can get non-profit status relatively cheaply and have access to insurance.

So many programs have a separate club program with its own bank account and non-profit status to run its offseason activities, and pays the coaches a stipend as well from that account.
