  • (5) Menlo-Atherton 51 @ (4) Valley Christian 65

CCS Open Bracket/Results

Mitty caused (or maybe Riordan self-caused) a bunch of turnovers early. The score was 0-0 for quite a while before the R took a 10-2 lead to the end of the 1st q. Mitty actually outscored Riordan in the 2nd q and the half score was 22-19. Riordan slowly pulled away in the 2nd half...

I couldn't say whether the R was just not sharp, or whether Mitty's Coach Kennedy had some new tricks or just if the Mitty kids just plain played their butts off. Somebody who knows a lot more about the game than I do will hafta answer that one...

One thing that may give Riordan a problem is the fact that they have not been tested and will not be tested for the last 17 games. (league and CCS). In the Norcal open and they get into a tight game- who knows?

Agreed. They haven't had close games since Torrey Pines in December. At least last season they played Salesian in the MLK and Centennial in the Crush In The Valley that kept them challenged. I think the difference this season is their team defense is much improved.

Who gets the #1 seed, St Joes or Riordan?

It would suck to have the NorCal Open finals played down in SoCal so I gotta believe they'll give Riordan the #1 seed but who knows. Riordan is ranked ahead of them on Maxpreps.com currently. Exactly who or what determines whether St Joes is put into SoCal or NorCal BTW?

We'll see how NCS and SJS Opens play out but I am really looking forward to see the NorCal Open brackets / games this year. My guess is as follows: Six team bracket with Riordan, St Joe's as top 2 seeds with byes then NCS Open winner #3 seed, SJS Open winner #4 with NCS runner up #5 and SJS Open runner up #6.

Let’s compare the two:

St Joseph’s (30-1) Mountain League Champs Central D1 Champs w/ win over Buchanan

Quality Wins: Oakland Tech (by 25), Orem (UT), Milton (GA), Holy Innocents (GA), Modesto Christian, Salesian

Losses: Calvary Christian (FL) (by 28) - For those that don’t know they are essentially a prep school, they play in OTE under Fear of God and just advanced to the Semis.

Riordan (24-1) WCAL Champions CCS Open Champs w/win over Pool B Winner

Quality Wins: Clovis North, Salesian, St Augustine (San Diego), Father Judge (PA),

Losses: Junipero Serra Christian (SJC) - Still played in The Open in SoCal and was a close game that Riordan lost in the final seconds.

It’s really tough, but I will still give the edge to St Joseph’s.
