All eyes were on the Gridley Invitational Basketball Tournament Finals, which pitted Salesian and Riordan in a rematch of the NorCal Open Division title game and the top two teams in the preseason. Riordan got a late three pointer from Texas A&M bound Jasir Rencher to beat Salesian 52-51. Andrew Hillman (tournament MVP) had 19 points and Rencher finished with 13 points. Salesian was led by 13 points from Isaiah Davis, but had six players score at least five points.
While the Crusaders and Pride still hold the top two spots, No. 3 De La Salle is off to another strong start with wins over Crespi and Santa Margarita. Senior Alec Blair is a leading contender for NorCal Player of the Year and the Spartans have held each of their seven opponents to 57 points or less.
Moving to the Sac-Joaquin Section, there was a major shakeup in their pecking order as Folsom has emerged as the top team through three weeks thanks to a 67-60 win over Lincoln-Stockton in the finals of the Edison-Stockton tournament. Lincoln also moved into the Top 5 following an overtime win over San Ramon Valley at the NorCal Tip Off Classic. Weber State bound Anthony Moore is averaging 20 points, five rebounds and three assists.
Looking at the new teams in this week’s ranking, Dublin and Campolindo are both off to undefeated starts. Dublin started off with a win over Destiny Christian at the NorCal Tip Off Classic and has since given California its only loss. It will host its Don Nelson Classic this week. Campolindo has a pair of tournament titles this year at the Montgomery tournament and the Liberty tournament. Ren Marchetti is averaging a team best 15 points and the Cougars have held four of their opponents to less than 50 points.
