The late Bud Presley, arguably the West Coast guru of man-to-man pressure defense prior to his passing, would be proud. Chuck Rapp has taken over his job in the 21st century. Rapp, no matter what kind of material he has at Serra, is an absolute master of preparation, motivation and execution. And tough, physical man defense is his calling card. Just ask Half Moon Bay on Friday night. Ouch.

Please. Coach Preseleys record is safe. As a co captain of Buds only State Championship team his 31-2 1972-73 Oaks led by Howie Dallmarr JR. Cliff"The Dealer" Martin and Mark 7'2 (the water buffalo) Dickey and 6'9 Ragan Lusk. What a team!!

Colhenrylives:

I can still hear Bud screaming "Belly-Up" and I can still see him watching some of practive from the cat-bird nest at the Menlo College gym. I believe Al Attles brought him to the Warriors at one time?

San Mateo High School had a coach once named Gus Hasapakis who was a disciple of Bud's also. He, like Bud would guard kids and show them what it meant to play man to man the correct way.

Re: Bud Presley

Coach Hassapakis was Buds assistant at Menlo in the early 70's when Menlo was a JC power. Gus was the perfect calm to Presleys storm. He was also successful HS coach at San Mateo HS

Bud would do training camps with the Warriors under Attles. Bud also coached the Australian Olympic team in the days that the Aussies were growing the sport.

OK, dudes, how about this: Bud coached the Cubberley HS team when that Palo Alto school opened in the 1950s. He did more with less than just about any prep coach in the business back then. With very little talent to speak of, his 1960 team upset a good Serra outfit (CAL regular season co-titlist with O'Dowd) that featured front-liners who went 6-7, 6-5, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 and 6-2. Cubberley held the Padres under 38 and upset them. Bud was an amazing piece of work, in a good way. John Grosey, Rapp's mentor, played for Bud at Menlo. The rest, as they say, is history. Serra may have lost that ballgame some 55 years ago, but the school is reaping the benefits now.

Good to see all of these great posts about Bud. I remember in later years his black sport coat smelling of cigarettes. He coming up and giving me a few pointers. Long may his memory live.

Those of us that played for Bud always heard the Cubberly stories. They were some of his fondest memories. In later years as the Menlo boys got older the truth came out. We won the damn State Title for the old man but we could never be as tough as the boys from Cubberly.

Nobody loved the City more than Bud. On one hand he would talk about the great games at Julius Khan and the next story would be about his beloved San Francisco sophistication. Going to dinner with Bud and the lovely Gloria was as good as it got. Gloria (the bear) was the greatest team Mom of all.

Did anyone on line ever ride in a car driven by the coach? That is living dangerously.

Nate:

Not with Bud, but many times we were driven to and from by baseball legend Frank Bettencourt. We were all smiling when we made it to our destination.
