Cardinal Newman off to good start, (1-0) apparently foundation games don’t count). Anya Choice had 41 pts after scoring 33 pts and 12 stls in previous victory Novato, 90-19.

Having a dominant scorer in a 90-9 and 90-40 game begs the question, how much did she play? The only reason I commented is because I have never seen a Cardinal Newman post that has singled out one player over the last 4 years when they have been outstanding. There is a good video I saw on the NCSA website where Geno Auriemma talks about parents ruining the game. It is awesome because he talks about how in AAU kids used to care about winning when they went to these showcases, now it's about who is there to watch and showcasing themselves. I could not agree more. It's becoming a slippery slope in my opinion. I have seen Cardinal Newman play a lot over the last 5 years. They participated in a scrimmage a Justin-Siena a few weeks ago and there is no doubt they have another potential Division 1 player in Choice. With that being said, they have a PG that I would take over many of the Bay Area "stars". They have some young talent and can shoot the ball really well. Their size seemed to be a little bit of a problem against Salesian(many teams will have the same problem) but their team understanding and ability to do the little things is no different than the prior CN teams that have been a lot bigger.

well.. winetot.. I must admit that I did not read the username of the original post before posting that... sooo yea.. I totally see what you mean and agree.. I almost said "lets see what she does against good competition" but I was afraid the other half would come at me for "hating" on her...

Onball - she is really good and has had good games against good teams. She was not awesome against Salesian in the scrimmage this year but I have seen her do some great things against great teams. In my opinion, this is probably the least talented team they have had since Coach Mertle's 1st or 2nd year. With that being said, they will have the 2 best players on the court in most of their games and will make another run in NCS and beyond. I do not think there is any way they will be placed in the Open this year(last year, they got jobbed). If they play together and play hard, they will be a tough out for anyone.

Well, without Flores this year, obviously Anya Choice going to be main focus and get plenty of shots up. Can you say GREEN LIGHT, LOL. Avery Cargill is so much fun to watch, love her game, very poised, smart, excellent shooter, ball handler, decision maker, and plays with attitude. It will be interesting and fun to see how this team does this season, and in the tournament next week. I am thinking most likely will play SHC and then BOD in championship. These teams will probably have some good size to contend with and will definitely be good early tests to see how good this team will be this season.

Did cal hi have all of their girls? I recall them being a really good team last year.

Really good? They did not make it out of section. not sure that would qualify as really good. Perhaps really average.
no your right. I am a positive guy. They had a win over dublin and castro valley last year. What I was getting at was they had some quality wins. The fact CN blasted them was just surprising to me. I thought that would be a good game.

When did basketball become a one man sport?

I hope you’re not implying that me posting about my daughter and her team is what’s ruining the game. I’m not even going to debate such a baseless argument. I’m excited for my daughter and the Newman team whom many I’ve known way before they’ve played at Newman. I totally support Coach Mertle and the incredible job she is doing with her program which was a goal of my daughters to play for since 4th grade. So excuse me for being excited about my daughter starting off her junior season with two of the best games of her career, no matter who the competition, and even in a foundation game.
I watch and support many girls and teams throughout the Bay and an excited for this season as any parent and fan of girls b-ball is. I’ll keep my comments to myself as not to cause any added attention, controversy or potentially ruin the game of girls high school basketball. Lol. Go Cardinals!

Hey, if you can't celebrate your daughter's accomplishments here, where can you? I don't think I saw any baseless bragging, just a recap of how she performed. I for one appreciate hearing about players throughout Nor Cal. Good luck to her and her team.

I was not saying you, specifically, are ruining the girls game. There are a lot of parents that care more about their children's individual statistics(specifically scoring) and have lost the concept of competition and team. It has become more important, to some parents, that their child is recognized for their points(whether their team wins or loses). As a coach and a parent of a player who had a very good high school career, it saddens me that some people have lost the understanding of winning and team success is far more important than someone scoring 20 and losing but is not bothered by their team losing. My response was not directed at you but at your post. It gave me the opportunity to share what I heard in Geno's press conference. I, too, agree that you should be able to celebrate your daughter's successes. I am certain she will have a fabulous season.

Did cal hi have all of their girls? I recall them being a really good team last year.

Cal wasn’t a world beater last year, but they were decent. They lost the EBAL championship game in 2OT last year to a solid SRV team. They lost a few good seniors (including one to UC Merced and another to Chico St.) but should still contend for 2nd place behind SRV this year. Beating Cal like that is impressive. I too wonder when they called off the dogs.

Score is surprising for sure.

Thank you. Appreciate that clarification. I think for the most part, I’ve come across a small percentage of parents who stress their child’s individual success over the team, while most are invested and supportive of the teams success as a whole. Of course, we all want to see our kids do well, and be recognized when they do well. Doesn’t mean we don’t stress the importance of being a team player and overall team success. I’ve seen that Geno press conference and definitely don’t want to be one of those parents. But thanks again. Looking forward to the season.

Kevin...my daughter Madison played with Anya the second half of Stars this summer and I've also coached against her. She is a very talented player and a very nice person as well. Madison really enjoyed playing with her. Best of luck to her CN team this season and to her recruiting process as well!

OK...
I was there and watched the entire game. Hopefully I can alleviate some of the concerns and answer some of the questions.

I thought Anya played great.

I would guess she also ended up with 5 or 6 assists, 5 or 6 rebounds, 3 or 4 steals and a couple of blocks also. I thought she did a good job of trying to hook her teammates up for the most part. Anya could have had 3 or 4 more assists but her teammates didn't finish on some good passes. The thing is Anya was getting to the basket at will and scoring....what are you supposed to tell her? stop scoring layups? Sure she scored 41 but I didn't think she was overly "ball hoggish" at all....she was just REALLY locked in.

Calif has no seniors. I don't think they are bad. I could see them getting a win in sections and ending up a lower seed in D2 in Norcals.
And to give Calif a legit excuse....talking to the scorekeeper during the game he told me that because of the AQ issues that Calif had to cancel 4 or 5 practices. And quite frankly they were DEFINITELY gassed in the 2nd half as CN was pushing the tempo most of the game.

The fact that many of the bay area teams could not practice for 8-14 days really takes it toll on a teams physical condition whereas many of the north bay teams weren't as affected by the AQ. That being said, I've always felt that Cal has been an underrated program. With all the talent they've had over the last 5 years, they should have done much better (especially last year).

Cal High has had better than average player talent over the years, but has had a revolving door of poor to average coaches which has made it impossible for the program to get any traction. The current coach does a good job but building a new culture is not easy after more than 20 years of underachievement.

Something to be said for those programs that have had coaches for a long time. Those seem to be the traditional winning programs

Yes, Jeff has done a good job at bringing consistency to the program and Tony (the coach before him) did a good job of laying a good foundation before going to the boys side. That being said, Cal usually starts off very strong but doesn't improve over the course of the season. The program in the EBAL that I've been most impressed with over the last two years has been SRV. The coach had never coached HS, started to create a good culture, and now everyone has buy in. He's done a great job and of course, it doesn't hurt that he has a lot of good young talent. It'll be interesting to see how ALL the teams in NCS do over the next few weeks as everyone in the bay area is playing catch up with missing so much practice.
