Just saw this...can anyone verify this??

"BREAKING NEWS: On a 7-5 majority vote, North Bay League members have voted to remove Cardinal Newman girls basketball from the league beginning the 2023-2024 season, citing competitive anomaly." IF this is true, shame on the admins that voted yes to kick Cardinal Newman out of their league, way to show your true colors.

It's true... the ONLY FEMALE COACH in the girls NBL basketball league has gotten kicked out by a bunch of men, who I can only assume, don't like getting their ass kicked by a woman.

The Rancho Vice Principal Sarlatte and the Montgomery AD Haskins admitted to talking about this for a few years now with Sarlatte leading the way and bringing it to a vote.

The 7 schools that voted to kick CN out of the league.

Montgomery
Santa Rosa
Ukiah
Maria Carrillo
Elsie Allen
Rancho Cotate
Piner

CN won their 8th straight NBL basketball title this season.

****of note... Maria Carrillo girls cross country won their 19th straight league title this year (male coach).

Maria Carillo Boys cross country won their 13th straight NBL title this year (male coach)

Montgomery Boys soccer won their 5th straight NBL title this year (male coach)

None were mentioned for the same fate as CN basketball though....

sounds personal to me if I didn't know better.

Another thing....

for 40+ years Montgomery girls basketball has been (arguably) the best girls program in the county. There have been challengers that have come and gone. Healdsburg, Santa Rosa, Ursuline, Maria Carrillo and most recent (last 8 yrs) Cardinal Newman. Montgomery has consistently been at or near the top of the standings. Now all of a sudden someone pushes back and challenges them and Montgomery decides to VOTE THEM OUT????

WHAT THE FU**????

I am appalled by the gutless decision of Montgomery high school and specifically Dean Haskins their AD.

Absolutely pathetic...

Wow! It seems like the surrounding schools respect the program enough to let them go and play in a league that matches their level of competitiveness. The real question is why would CN even want to stay in that league with such a lack of competition? CN has proven its time to move on.

These decisions to vote a team out are never good. It frees up a league title, but that is it. Will do nothing to improve other programs' chances at section wins or NorCal wins

So is this just for girls basketball? Similar to Carondelet or De La Salle agreeing to go independent, or is this different because it was done against CN’s will?

I believe it was done against their will. Similar to what the SFL wanted to do with Folsom football a few years back

Unfreaking believable. What a joke of AD's who voted this through.
CN doesn’t want to leave because of the travel and logistical issues of trying to create a full schedule right? Which I understand completely. But I can’t imagine they want to keep playing in 60 point blowouts in league year after year.

So... What will CN do?

Join another Northbay league? Start up a new league with other area schools? Go independent?

If they do join another league, will they also apply to move all sports to the league they move to?

Honestly, if they are successful in moving all teams, they would have every right to refuse to play the NBL teams ever again (unless stuck together in playoff brackets).

If this last bit came true and lasted for many seasons until CN and an NBL team got forced to play each other in the playoffs... Wouldn't that be one hell of a game? :)

What Nothtbay league would they join?? NCL 1, WVAL, MCAL? Those are their options. And none are better options.

CN is a private outlier in a public school league, not unlike Marin Catholic and Branson in the MCAL. They play be different enrollment rules. In all sports. This clear disparity issue has been addressed in CCS by the presence of two private-only leagues, the WCAL and the WBAL. It's not clear how the North Bay can solve its private problem. Adding CN, MC and Branson to the BCL probably wouldn't work because of their size and the scope of their athletic programs. But a new private-only league could be created with, say, CN, MC, Branson, Salesian, St. Patrick's, St. Mary's, St. Joseph's, O'Dowd and so on. It would be a sort of CAL 2.0. NCS disbanded the old East Bay CAL late in the 1980s. Perhaps those poobahs would re-consider that move. Or not.

geezuz christ.....

how many frign times do we have to repeat SONOMA COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT is OPEN ENROLLMENT????????

THERE ARE NO DIFFERENT ENROLLMENT ISSUES!!!

Unless you want to mention the 17k tuition cost of Cardinal Newman compared to free for all the publics?

I mean seriously i must have stated this 50??? times in the past on these threads. This argument is old and stale and simply incorrect.

the horse is dead....stop beating it please

****Santa Rosa City School district...NOT Sonoma County..my bad...slip of the tongue.

To be clear: Are you saying that Sonoma County public schools districts, all of them, allow absolutely free student movement between all of the districts all of the time? Not just between schools within a single district but all districts all the time? If that's true, it's stunning and unlike anything else in NorCal. Open enrollment for students within a particular district is not out of the ordinary. But an entire county with total freedom of student movement among all districts would be unique. By the way, CN can enroll students from Napa County, Marin County, Contra Costa County or San Francisco, not just Sonoma County. CN has no limits on geography when it comes to enrollment.

Col, while your argument is valid, as mentioned above, apparently these schools seem to have no issues with the private vs. public disparities.

How is basketball different? And why doesn't this apply to boy's basketball? CN boys went 6-4 in league and 15-12 overall. It seems to me this is more of a coach of a girls program having success and this isn't a product of private vs. public, otherwise you'd see this across the board in all sports.

Any incoming freshman who is in the Santa Rosa city school district can fill out the transfer papers and go to any Santa Rosa city school they want. Open enrollment has been in SR city schools for 20+ yrs.

***technically it is Santa Rosa City school district and not Sonoma County...so I wasnt 100% accurate but you get the idea.

This open enrollment has destroyed the West side High Schools like Piner and Elsie Allen. At 1 point there were actually more Elsie Allen district students enrolled in OTHER schools than there were actually in Elsie Allen.

That just opened up one of the other seven teams to get to a state title. Competitive equity right. Hilarious. Hope CN finds a place and makes a run at it one day.

Thanks. I had a feeling that was probably the case. Total county-wide open enrollment would cause administrative/funding chaos.

This is correct and for the most part correct of all 2+ High school districts in California now. At one point west Santa Rosa had middle class families, mainly white, sending kids to Analy, Montgomery, Santa Rosa, and beyond. Today the vast majority of young families children are 1st generation born in the US, mixed with some 2nd generation born, in that area. Despite them being Catholic, CN does not attract these students. Go to any SR public school besides Maria Carillo. There is a lack of athletic support at all levels, coaches, admin, AD, parents, and kids are just assimilating to life in the USA. Athletics are mainly secondary due to cost and unfamiliarity, although this is changing for the better I think. CN does not face these challenges at all. Covid closures just exaggerated the gap as well. A good example on who can take any type of kid and create a good team is Piner Boys Coach Erickson. Piner HS is now very low income (55%) and very Latino (70%). Yet he creates solid teams every year. It’s great those kids have such a positive figure.

CN gets the best AAU players around. Thanks to their coach. No shame to admit it. Saint Vincent’s petlauma football is attempting something similar right now.

for the record...

Maria Carrillo coach Jeff Paul has the largest AAU program in the county (Nor Cal Academy)... it's literally FIVE TIME LARGER than the program CN Coach Monica Mertle has (North Bay Elite).

size isnt everything...

Same Cardinal Newman that opted out of NBL play in 2021 to pursue AAU competition instead?

maybe just maybe...look inward to place blame.

HIRE..
BETTER..
COACHES..

it gets used alot/too much... but in this case the analogy is apt...

Mertle is playing chess and the rest of the coaches are playing checkers.

cause if you place our girls in a lineup vs the rest of the girls in the league you won't be able to tell them apart. There aren't a bunch of freak athletes showing up for girls basketball at CN.

Here's the thing about HS girls basketball and im pretty sure I wont get an argument on what I'm about to say.

More often than not girls basketball is a secondary thought for most schools. Schools will hire just about anybody who's willing to take the job. So you will get a GIANT DESCREPANCY in the quality of coaches in a league . The schools that take the time to search out and hire the better coaches will have more success.

We could probably give a little credit to the players...
