For those who are too young to remember, or weren't around at all, the recent passing of Jim Liggett is worth noting. He developed the Carlmont football program into one of the very best public school operations in the Central Coast Section more than 40 years ago. His teams were tough, physical, fundamentally-sound, well-prepared and focused. Perhaps his best, and best-known, football player was Bill Ring, an ex-Forty Niner RB. Liggett, a former minor league baseball player who grew up in the East Bay, spent five decades at Carlmont; he became an institution there. He was a full-time math/PE instructor; he gave up his football coaching duties about 25 years ago. He also coached girls' softball. In that sport, his teams were even more dominant. He churned out more than 1,000 softball wins (he became the state leader in that statistic) and dozens of Division I college players in a career that lasted until the close of the 2016 season when he finally retired because of serious health issues. He died of complications due to ALS last weekend. He was 76. The Peninsula and CCS, not to mention the communities of Belmont and San Carlos, have lost one of the very best teacher/coaches ever.
