Looks like this year we will see alot of very good matchups in the Open. St Francis will be the favorite, but by a slim margin. Half Moon Bay will get a chance to show they are the real deal and SHP will try and prove doubters wrong as they did in football. Palma is quietly having a great season as well with only 3 losses one of them to St Francis by 10 points. The WCAL teams having been beating up on eachother, so anything can happen if they matchup again. Serra is playing their best basketball now, St Francis is shooting the ball well, SHC could suprise if the atheletes show up, Riordan could suprise as well with a prolific scorer, and will Mitty get hot again? All these questions will be answered next week with some first round upsets looming. This is assuming these teams are in the open.

SHC (7-6) appears to be in the driver's seat for finishing 4th in league. SHC finishes league play at Mitty, Bellarmine (6-7) hosts SI and Riordan (6-7) hosts St.Francis.
Odds are extremely high against the Crusaders finishing at 7-7 against a hot St. Francis team and possibly tie Bellarmine and SHC should Bellarmine win and SHC lose to Mitty.
Not enough firepower to counter the Lancer attack - especially with Galindo out. Not that it may have mattered as SF is very balanced. It's a shame Aussie transfer, Robert Colton, was ineligible this year for the Crusaders as he would have provided a some height and outside shooting to complement Eddie Stansberry. Teams are concentrating on limiting Stansberry and daring the other Crusaders to beat them. A sound strategy that has worked against the Crusaders.

St Francis and Serra are the favorites, but could see one of the D4 teams upset them.

Not sure if Palma (21-3/12-0) will this year, but they are young. only one senior starter ( four year starter) and they actually played St Francis tough. The were tied at half and SF had a big third quarter. Even then Palma got to within 3 with 3 minutes left in the game as I was told, and lost by 9. They lost early in season to St Mary's Stockton and had a bad game against Santa Cruz. They play pretty good defense and the young players with good senior bench have been getting better. Young teams can be inconsistent. Next year they should be better. I like this team because they have shooters and an inside game on offense. Thy have had some recent good players (Noah Allen - UCLA and Orlando Johnson Indiana Pacers and now D league) but if those players had a down game or were shut down, they had no offense. This team has some talent (i.e., Palma's center outscored SF's) but play more as a team.

I think overall, the games could be pretty good.

SHP is gonna go far and prove doubters wrong once again. I predict a far run in CCS Open and NorCal. They are so skilled, but lack good size. I think the size is not that big of a deal because they have strong guys in #3 and #33. Depending on how the schedule plays out I think they will make it to the finals unless they get screwed and have to play St. Francis in the first round. SHP is very technically sound and do many things next to perfectly. Expect big things from some of the same names you heard in football season. (Randall, Martella, and Dashbach). I want they do prove the doubters wrong again and prove to them they are a legitimate WCAL (meaning that they could be a WCAL team) sports program and football was not a fluke. Go Gators.

Two questions...

Does Serra being on probation in CCS mean anything for basketball?

Are we seeing Forslund Vs Buckner for a first round match?

Football program is suspended, but other sports on probation and can participate in playoffs.

Riordan 47 St. Francis 43

Crusaders with a pressure win over WCAL Champ St. Francis on Senior night at the Forum and should gain strong consideration for a CCS Open spot. Seldom used senior (Cardenas) and sr. Role player (Banks) come through with key 3 pt shots with Bank's giving the Crusaders their first lead in the game with 5 min to play and never relinquishing it. Crusader D once again was solid holding the Lancers to 5 points in the pivotal 4th qtr. Jr. Eddie Stansberry was the best player on the floor leading all scorers with 19 pts and limiting Stapes to 6 pts. This was definitely his statement for POY consideration. Good to see Crusader's Karim make an impact with blocked shots, rebounds and limiting SF's Hewitt scoring / rebounding when he was in the game . Feel good moments as Aussie Robert Colton was introduced during sr. Night ceremonies and a touching surprise of the appearance of Karim's 2 sisters.

Re: Riordan 47 St. Francis 43

Taking a stab at the Open Division based on my understanding that head to head games are a significant factor in the decision making process and then overall resume (strength of schedule, etc.)

St. Francis - WCAL ChampSerra - WCAL Runner-UpMitty - WCAL 3rd placePalma - Bad Loss to Santa Cruz, but wins over Aptos and Piedmont Hills who will be on the open board. Palma beat Salinas twice who beat Sequoia. Sacred Heart Cathedral/Riordan - I think SHC gets a slight nod over the other 2 WCAL teams they're tied with for 4th. Bellarmine has two wins over top 3 WCAL Teams in St. Francis and Mitty but it's non-league schedule removes them from the argument. I think Sacred Heart Cathedral has played a slightly stronger schedule and has better wins/quality losses. They need to be seeded here to avoid a WCAL vs WCAL matchup. Sequoia - Winners of the PAL Tournament with wins over Mills and Half Moon Bay gets them the nod. Half Moon Bay - I think this being a down year overall in CCS puts them in the open despite soft schedule, and losing to Sequoia gets them seeded below. Sacred Heart Prep - Their loss to Menlo-Atherton kills them (even though it was the opener) because Half Moon Bay beat M-A 3 times. They should be seeded higher but the Palma beating Salinas who beat Sequoia who beat Half Moon Bay who beat M-A 3 times who beat SHP will be the argument.
(1) St. Francis vs (8) SHP(2) Serra vs (7) HMB(3) Mitty vs (6) Sequoia(4) Palma vs (5) Sacred Heart Cathedral
If Fremont is chosen because of their league champion status over Sequoia I see it as -
(1) St. Francis(2) Serra(3) Mitty(4) Palma(5) SHC(6) HMB(7) SHP(8) Fremont
Should be entertaining tomorrow.

Re: Riordan 47 St. Francis 43

Yes, but SHP beat bellarmine, who beat Mitty and SF once- I think you have the right teams, maybe not the right order-We shall see.

I predict the Open Matchups will be

Palma vs Serra

HMB vs Mitty

Fremont vs St Francis

Riordan vs Sacred Heart Prep

Others team on the Open board for discussion will be

Bellarmine
Piedmont Hills
Mills
Sequoia

My picks for Open

1. St. Francis
2. Serra
3. SHP
4. Mitty
5. HMB
6. SHC or Riordan (but ill pick SHC)
7. Palma
8. Fremont or Sequoia (but i pick Fremont)

No problems for me.

OPEN Division Teams

Saint Francis
Serra
Mitty
Riordan
Half Moon Bay
Palma
Sacred Heart Prep
Fremont

CCS OPEN Division Bracket

#1 Saint Francis vs. Fremont
#2 Junipero Serra vs. Half Moon Bay
#3 Archbishop Mitty vs. Palma
#4 Sacred Heart Prep vs. Archbishop Riordan

Re: CCS OPEN Division Bracket

Guess the Hostess schedule paid off and HMB is rewarded for their bodybof work with an Open Division bid vs long time nemesis rival Chucky Rapp's Pads. Good luck Doc, you miss our beloved Crusaders again! More twinkies and ding dongs next year for everyone at the Forum! LOL

Re: CCS OPEN Division Bracket

Watch Half Moon Bay and Riordan run the table and ended up facing each other

Re: CCS OPEN Division Bracket

It's going to be a first round sweep for the WCAL. Serra is not a good draw for HMB. Riordan will have some trouble with SHP, but should prevail. St. Francis will handle Fremont easily. Mitty will have a battle but too much talent to lose. Open division will be the tournament/playoffs that did not happen in the WCAL this year.

Honestly the only team I can see winning their first round that is not a WCAL is SHP. I totally agree this tournament is going to be dominated by the WCAL teams.

In terms of overall records and teams they've faced here are the Freeman Rankings as rated for the CCS of the teams in the Open Division among the Top 15 ranked CCS teams:

1] St. Francis
2] Serra
3] Mitty
4] SHC
5] Riordan
6] SHP
7] Palma

8] Bells
8] Leland
10] Sequoia
11] Palo Alto
12] HMB
13] Fremont
14] Piedmont Hills
15]Homestead

So in terms of seeding in first round going by CCS rankings we will have:

#1 SF vs #13 Fremont
#2 Serra vs #12 HMB
#3 Mitty vs #7 Palma
#6 SHP vs #5 Riordan

Any scores or upset predictions by any fans out there? I thought HMB was very under-rated until their recent couple losses. They are a big team looking at the roster & wonder if they'll give Serra problems inside? Fremont appears to rely heavily on a 1-man scoring machine so that should be interesting how SF defends him. I do think the Mitty-Palma & SHP-Riordan games will be the best of the 4 [not sure why, just a hunch]. So WHO is the "dark horse of the CCS Open? Let's hear if anone thinks HMB, Palma, SHP will surprise or for that matter Riordan [ strange, but feels like SHC should be in Open looking at the teams..]

I wouldnt be surprised by any one of the lower seeds pulling off an upset. There is not one team that has just dominated all year in this tourney. Remember Soquel was a shot away at beating Mitty WITH Mr Gordon and last year SHC needed a sportscenter top play to beat HMB. That Fremont kid MO is a good scorer and will probably be double teamed vs SF. Someone else needs to step up the scoring load. Their problem will be on the defensive end. St Francis is loaded with scorers, but when they are off, they are way off!

SHP - Riordan should be a great matchup . Don't know much about SHP this season other than Randall is also their QB and they played Serra tough @ home. Riordan's last 4 games - Bellarmine, @ Serra, @ SHC and St. Francis should have them battle-tested vs SHP's last 4 games - TKA, Menlo, Pinewood and Eastside Prep. But anything can happen. Should be good one.

I'm taking SHP in this one 54-49. SHP is a very very good team. They can compete with any team in CCS. They shoot the ball as good or better than any team in CCS. If you want to go to a game for the first round go to this game its gonna be a good one.

Palma versus Mitty should be a good game. Palma defense is good. They held St Francis Hewitt to 9 points and their center Maker had 19.

Other than being 6-8, Hewitt is an average high school player. When matched up against Riordan's Karim Ndiaye, he was unable to finish strong on any of his shots (6 pts) and was neutralized on the boards. I believe Hewitt's points and rebounds occurred when Karim was on the bench. Though Karim is well-liked by the Crusader fans, he also has a limited skill set but is active. Could be from having 2 serious knee injuries the past two years.
If Palma's guard play is strong, and Maker and Kone are a push, this could be a game. The X-factor is if Mitty's 6-6 shooter, Much, is able to play.

My predictions for quarters are

Serra in an ugly game over HMB by about 10

Mitty beats Palma by 14 plus

St Francis in a blowout of 20 plus

Riordan shuts down SHP shooters in the second half and wins by 6

Palma guard play is pretty good. One Burlison is a 4 year starter. The other a soph is a shooter. Not a lot of height but good passing and shooting. Good defenders. Palma has a good bench.

If anything HMB is overrated this year. I seriously doubt they will give Serra problems inside, although they do hit the offense boards. They send 4 and 5 guys to the glass and if they do not get the board then Serra could end up with a lot of baskets off outlet passes. I am surprised that they got picked to go to the Open ahead of Sequoia, who won the PAL tournament and beat HMB in the process.

If there is a dark horse I would say Palma. They have had a pretty solid year with their losses coming to St. Mary's Stockton, St. Francis and Santa Cruz. They are a young team with only 3 seniors, but they have balanced scoring after their leading scorer who goes for 15 ppg. Tough thing for them is playing against Mitty who will be more battle tested.

Serra 55 HMB 48 Hmb is well coached as is Serra. I expect a low scoring defensive game.br>
Mitty 64 Palma 57 Which Mitty team will show up? Mitty has alot games vs Palma and have won the last 4 over them by double digits.

St Francis 76 Fremont 47 Tough matchup for the Firebirds. They will need Mo to have another 40 point game to win.r>
SHP 59 Riordan 56 SHP is solid and methodical with the way they run their offense. Can they limit Stansberry ? Riordans defense has been looking good as of late.

Is Mitty team as good as the Gordon teams? No...Although Palma had Orlando Johnson (Indiana Pacers) I think in at least one game.

The biggest difference between the SHP football and basketball teams is that the former featured (at two key positions) one of the truly dominant CCS athletes over the last two seasons. The hoops unit, though quite good, has no one anywhere close to that guy, a Division I talent who is a Pac-12 recruit.

And they also had Noah Allen in a couple. Like I said it depends on which Mitty team shows up. They have beaten very good teams without the transfer in St Francis and El Cerrito. If they are the Mitty that was blown out by Serra and St Francis recently then Palma has a good chance.

Regarding SHP Randall who was the qb this year can flat out shoot the ball. I saw him play this summer in aau ball and he would start for most if not all ECAL teams. They play smart and heady team ball and I think them beating Riordan wouldnt even be an upset.

Well, Riordan is the underdog @ #5 vs #4 SHP. Though, that is splitting hairs. Riordan D has been a constant all season, only allowing 5 points in the 4th quarter against SF. Come playoff time, defense "travels" better than outside shooting, especially on a neutral site. The Crusaders did play at Santa Clara last year, "upsetting" Burlingame as many picked them to beat the Crusaders.
ColHenry hit the nail on the head about the Football and Basketball comparison. BKK was an absolute beast in the CCS/Norcals the past two seasons and is heading to UW. Will be interesting how SHP deals with Eddie Stansberry as every WCAL team struggled containing him except his former Padre team. The 6-3 Stansberry was a terror on the Lancers with long range shots and impressive drives and flat out shut down SF's Stapes, only allowing 6 pts (2 3s). 6-8 Karim Ndiaye had his best game of the season with 11 boards and some nice put backs and looks to be finally coming off his knee injury in their win against St. Francis and his matchup with SF's 6-8 Hewitt. Jr 6-3 Jason Smith is another long and athletic player with shot blocking skills and very good man defense and can take it coast to coast with a "flush. Jrs 6-2 Rassam and 6-1 Norman have gained considerable playing time and confidence with Galindo being out the past 4 games. SHC, Mitty, Bellarmine, Serra, SI and St. Francis fielded teams with several good 3 pt shooters. I'll take that battle-tested WCAL gauntlet as ample preparation for SHP. Riordan in a close one - 58-57.

I think SHP finds a way to stop Stansberry, but the 6'8" kid could possibly destroy SHP. I have not seen Riordan play, but I could imagine a 5" advantage would create a big difference. I think if the 6' 8" kid plays it could possibly hurt Riordan because SHP would just stretch him out and allow for their shooters to rain in 3 pointers and take home the win. Does the tall kid play?

Final Prediction: SHP 53 Riordan 47

Riordan's 6-8 Karim is a raw player, but is very active as he runs the floor well, blocks shots and grabs rebounds. He's coming off 2 consecutive years of injuries to the same knee, so he's been slowly rounding into shape and appeared the most confident and active last weekend against SF's 6-8 Hewitt. He's certainly played against some of the Area's best big men in Mitty's Ben Kone (twice) and O'Dowd's 6-10 All-American, Ivan Rabb.
Based on SHP's roster, Karim may start, but if SHP plays 4 guards and a forward, Riordan can also play that game. Their primary rotation has 7 players in the 6-1 - 6-5 range. All are quick, long and athletic and really go after it on defense.
Coach Buckner is highly regarded in the WCAL as he apprenticed under current HMB coach/Riordan grad, Rich Forslund during Riordan's state title runs in 2001 and 2002. He also played in the state title game during Riordan's dynasty years, losing by 2 points to Mater Dei. Looking forward to Fri night!
