PCAL Playoffs Week 1

Looks like Carmel faces Hollister next week....The Capuchino QB was really good. Hollister ground attack looked good. Could be a good game.

D2 next week
Palma faces Menlo School (Atherton) who defeated Christopher 21-14
Wilcox (defeated Santa Teresa 36-3) faces Menlo-Atherton (defeated Monterey 35-7)

Palma got the best draw after beating SHC. Wilcox defeated both Menlo and Menlo Atherton in league games. Palmaand Menlo have similar Calpreps ratings. With bump Palma will be favored but I like being underdog better. Should be a good game. Soph QB and Dukes and defense showed up big tonight.

Palma got a great draw. Carmel being held to DIII made DII not as strong. Palma vs Menlo is an interesting matchup. I watched a little bit of Christopher vs Menlo last night. Menlo is going to have a tough time stopping the Palma run game. They aren't very big or fast on defense. Christopher kept trying to take deep shots which killed them but were having no problem running the ball. Menlo spreads the field on offense which Palma has struggled with. It didn't appear that they had any top tier talent at the skill positions. Palma has fast CBs but they arent the biggest or most physical. Not having to deal with a Kayvon Collins or Emarrcis Turner type of WR really helps them. Menlo likes to take deep shots.

I give the advantage to Palma. Dukes and co are too good running the ball. Palma's OL is solid. They have 3 TEs are that are all good blockers. Once Menlo starts to stack the box Palma will hit them with a PA deep shot to soften them up. They have always been known to sprinkle in the trick plays in the playoffs.

Riordan 27 Soquel 0 Q2 8:50
Riordan lines are too big, athletic and fast and executing well. Mismatch so far.

Soquel followers, since the Knights played both SRV and Los Gatos in close 14-7 losses, curious to get your assessment of Riordan and its upcoming game against Los Gatos? Riordan played a senior -dominated ‘ Cats team last year on the road in their first round loss. Essentially the entire Crusader squad returns for Saturday’s rematch.

Riordan defensive line in the middle is very stout and o-line really good. They have excellent RB and QB with fast WRs. Riordan is more athletic than Los Gatos. Got to favor Riordan if they play their A game but they also can be inconsistent.

Los Gatos QB is impressive and they are very sound on defense. A very good Cat team.

It will come down to the trenches and who limits big plays. Riordan dismantled and dominated a very good Soquel team that lost by 7 to the cats and seems to be playing at high level. I'm inclined to think Riordan will win by 10+ and should be favored, but if the Cats can withstand and neutralize the Riordan line, it could be a close one. Riordan also can start slow. I wouldn't call it a huge upset if Los Gatos pulls out a win. This is high school football.

If Riordan plays like they did Saturday, I think they will win handily. Soquel and LG are comparable. LG has a more size and numbers but neither has the size or speed of Riordan.

This is a game Riordan should win, but again if Riordan looks past LG it could be a close game. Riordan is a very tough matchup for teams that can't match their physicality. They can spread you out and still maul you. LG plays smart sound football so if Riordan doesn't play a clean game anything could happen.
