Word is Gatrell is out at Moreau and Perry out at ODowd… it’s February so interesting to see what happens there with two potentially good programs

Any insight why O'Dowd has struggled to have sustained success? A lot of coaching turnover plays into it, but why do they struggle to keep coaches?

Keep hiring off campus guys.. chased big names with Nickerson and Kaufman and sounds like Perry was bad fit. When Lad stepped down from DLS, successor was clear choice, programs rolls forward doesn’t miss a beat, ODowd swinging for fences and missing. Kaufman won a state title but couldnt sustain a program

DLS didn’t miss a beat?

DLS overall has done well, but to say they haven’t missed a beat since Lad left?? They’ve taken some steps backward as a program overall.

Certainly not as big of a drop off as BOD, but yeah they lost to 2 NorCal teams this year. When was the last time that happened? When Pitt beat them in the '91 NCS final at the Coliseum, they were already on a nice winning streak leading up to that one.

Did DLS take a step back or has the area closed the gap? And in closing that gap are kids more inclined to stay home and play. Honestly if say Pitt, or even CV down the road could up their game DLS would seriously be in trouble. Pitt tons of talent but can’t match DLS where? CV open enrollment charter attracts kids from all over the bay but can’t match DLS where? The answer is clear really “coaching” get a heavy hitter in take next step and watch what happen to DLS.

So what are they like a 90-10 over last 7 years instead of 100-0..??? Not really calling that a step back and yes other area programs have stepped up. DLS is not littered with D1 talent like a MaterDei but yet still have not lost NCS championship

Watch games during the steak era and tell me if they were much more crisp? Less penalties. Less unforced errors. Less mental mistakes.

Look at some of their recent SBG’s and their starts. Miscues on special teams, fumbles etc. QB’s the last few years have not shown great strides in improvement (Hale did get better, but even his senior year he had some bad throw).

Take away the opponents and who they’re playing they are just sloppier than they did in the Lad era. With the veer the chance for turnovers is always there, high risk/reward? Just seems like way more unforced turnovers and guys don’t come out of the gates in big games like they used to as far as being ready?

ncs championships versus ss championships. big difference. they havent won outside of ncs

Spot on. Much more self inflicted wounds now than in past. I would also say the gap has narrowed too. Plus the program lost that mythical feel after lad left .

every high school program wishes they had DLS type success. What Lad did is unprecedented and likely never duplicated, not fair to compare IMO. Remember this chain started with fall off of O’Dowd, really since Perenon left. Clearly a different case

I was just responding to the they haven’t missed a beat. Yes, still a top 99% program, but not fully the program they were.

As a Spartie fan., I believe this is a fair assessment. Coach 'Baugh is working with a newer, younger coaching staff and I think he has his work cut out for him working both sides of the sidelines. Hopefully he will soon find his "Sundance Kid" as Lad had with Coach Eidson.
I believe using the Spartan tradition and expectation are very useful starting points to build his teams.
I trust Coach Lad's choice of Alambaugh as his successor.
Getting past the Zombie Virus uncertainty will allow him to focus on molding his team. I understand all coaches/ teams have had to deal with the same problems.
I think using the Lad/ veer offense requires more time and fine tuning. And also I think Coach Baugh is willing to adjust his veer to the team tools with which he must work and to the improved level of competition he is now facing.

.......but what do I know, just an old fart who is grateful to keep his stroke meds straight.
Go Spartans !!

They aren’t the program they were because area programs have stepped up as well. Look honestly the streak was great, good story and chest bumping stuff. But reality is DLS built a serious HS football program and feasted by and large on a area that just didn’t really have the same commitment, that is the bulk of those wins. It was easy to look really good when comp was so bad. This also leads to hoarding most all the local talent. What has changed is area teams have gotten better, then factor in things like charter schools DLS isn’t attracting the same kids.

Demographics changed too. Bay Area families are moving away and getting displaced by Indian and asian families who could care less about football. Sac area has benefited tremendously over past decade +. That’s a fact.

When players like Harris, Mixon (and Rivers) to mention a few, make it big (not off the field!) there's less historical incentive to bail on your local public to "get noticed."

True that. Saw on the news there is movement to build a $50 million cricket pitch in the South Bay or SouthEast Bay Area for use by a pro Cricket team which would include outlying facilities for junior teams/training programs.

And I didn’t say this is a bad thing either. I’m just saying it is what it is. Those families really value education and other forms of athletics. (Generally Not football). Football is very American. Go other places in the world and not so much.

but the fast twitch athletes are still populating Richmond, Pittsburg and Antioch. so the players are still there.

Very odd statement, care to elaborate? Why do you think “fast twitch athletes” are mainly present in these cities?
refer to your sociology, urban planning, or health professor for clarification. how can it be odd if you need elaboration?

I have no idea. All I know is the Bay Area costs has pushed many families either further East or out of the state entirely.

the cost of living in the bay has been high for 30 years now. it isnt anything new. but the next generations have been leaving.

Cost is a factor along with no sign voters will be getting anymore intelligence. I feel pretty confident in saying as a whole Americans have probably never been more ignorant than they are today. Which one may think is a odd statement since we have more college educated than ever before. Educated and intelligence are not the same sadly.

No doubt about that........Safe to say and increasingly so.

I have to give some credit to DLS for the games and teams and the way they play today. Back in the 90’s I remember one writer who laughed at the thought that DLS could beat Mater Dei. Which led to the LBP games and OOS games. Then we had the Norcal/Socal games. Socal learned what it would take to beat DLS. More horse power and coaching. Now with the top teams travelling each year OOS, the level of high school football has evolved.

it’s all about good coaching and having the horses. DLS had a small part in that. Oh, and the USA rankings helped.

Couple of new hires I have seen in the past few days:

Joel Cordero has been hired at Oak Grove
Tony Martello has stepped down at Colfax
Joseph Mccray is the new head coach at Franklin-Elk Grove
Marc Moses is the new head coach at Granada

Riordan, SHC, O’Dowd, St Marys, Moreau jobs all open… kind of crazy all these privates at one time
