Commentary: Competitive Equity Punishes Small Schools for Winning

Were there teams dropped more than one spot below their enrollment division? I can envision D1 enrollment teams going to maybe D3, but don't know of any examples.

For the vast majority of teams, they are in the "right" division in sections, but get moved just because in NorCals. I would also like to see equal representation from each section for each division.

System needs to be fixed, but that said, there has been a lot of competitive games the past eight days.

I guess I just long for the days when actually winning in league meant something. I almost think that leagues should be the deciding factor for Division. WCAL is D-1. AAA is D-2. MCAL probably D-2. BCL is 4 or 5. I mean having teams spread out through sections and NorCal after playing a league season together is just weak.

Everyone is a winner. Top 4 in league go to Sections….top 2 in sections go to norcal. I guess not enough money. Oh and get off my lawn.

Just an old guy on a geared bike with no motor.

From the Sac-Joaquin Section teams, I did not see any teams move DOWN more than one division from their original division level. However, one team did move up two (2) division levels -- Vanden from D3 to D1. Laguna Creek moved up one from D2 to D1. Lincoln-Stockton and McClatchy moved one down from D1 to D2.

Oakland Tech is D1 and got dropped to D3...and they are playing for the D3 state Title...SHOCKING!

Their 3RD STRAIGHT NORCAL TITLE....

winning the D4???!!! state title 3 yrs ago...
the D2 state title 2 yrs ago...
and now playing for the D3 state title this year...

can competitive equity be any dumber than this Oakland Tech example??? A D1 school that continually gets underseeded and despite winning b2b State titles STILL GETS DROPPED TO D3.

RIDICULOUS!!!

***their Wikipedia page has them between 1900-2100 students .

Why should any teams go down? Allow teams to go up to Open if they choose to. But don't allow teams to handpick what level they go up to. Otherwise play your division. Teams with 2500-3000 kids shouldn't be competing down in D3 and D4 for Section or State.
Teams handpick where they go ? How’s the seeding system set up??

to be fair Cranky those darn kids are REALLY screwing your lawn up!

I just don't understand why we need comp equity? I thought the entire purpose of the OPEN was to pull the Big Dogs out of their division to give all the other squads a chance. Why did the CIF feel the need to take it a step further?
I get it. On the real though, Oakland has suffered enough. Losing the Raiders, Warriors.... A's maybe... Let em have this one!

Instead of a committee to rank teams for post-season competition, I suggest that we have a committee to do pre-season rankings of each school's recruiting class. Then in December hand out trophies to the teams that come in first, tenth, twentieth, etc. Then teams could just play whoever they want to play without worrying about how it will impact their post-season rankings. Do away with post-season play entirely and let the kids move on to track and field, softball, etc.

It's seriously ridiculous how some of this seeding and divisional placement works. The Division 5 representative from the south this year, Chafey, has 3,231 students. It's just absurd. Set it up so that if a team has continued success (NorCal Semis consecutive years?) they move up a division.

At worst, you should know what division you're in going into the season. No backroom, smoky meetings handing underseeded (I'm looking at you Pleasant Valley ;)) teams state championships.
