DeCosta, Kakala make final 40 roster

St. Mary's-Stockton 2018 forward Aquira DeCosta and Manteca 2017 post Loretta Kakala are the only local players left at the USA Basketball U17 trials as the roster has been trimmed to 40 players

Other local players who survived the first two cuts were Mitty's Haley Jones (2019), Sacred Heart Cathedral's Iimar'i Thomas (2017) and Folsom McKenzie Forbes (2018)

Forbes, who plays for the Arizona Select club team in Phoenix, joined Kakala and DeCosta as Sunday survivors. Fifteen or so of those 40 girls will stay through Wednesday or Thursday, and from that group, the final 12 will be chosen.

Aquira DeCosta is the only NorCal on the team, and only one of three from the 12-girl roster that lost to Brazil last summer.

Also, there are only four girls from the Class of 2017, three from 2019, and 11 from 2018.

Yes, that makes 18 -- they will cut to 12 Thursday night or Friday morning, so DeCosta is not guaranteed a spot.

One other note: Seven girls who were not invited are in the final 18, meaning at least one will make the final roster. You never know ...
