Same with Rolling Hills Prep........all underclass including six freshmen, but unlike Eastside they've never been on this stage...could make a huge difference.

Zion Gabriel hits a buzzer beating 3 to put Eastside Prep up 13-7 END Q1

Eastside is on a 13-2 run and leads 21-9 with 541 left in the half.

Gabriel has now made three 3s

Eastside leads 34-16 at halftime. Panthers are 6-for-12 from deep.

Rolling Hills has missed 10 free throws

Eastside leads 43-23 with 310 left in Q3. Zion Gabriel has tied the state record with six threes

This game is a perfect argument for the Open Division and competitive balance seeding.

Rolling Hills Prep is a legit D5 team, and a good one; the only way ESCP is D5 is by enrollment. Eastside belongs in D1 or D2 in terms of their level of play and most likely will be there next year if the CIF does as it plans.

Enrollment has little to do with the level of play of teams like Pinewood or Eastside; or at the other end, like Modesto or Armijo, which are D1 by enrollment but D5 in level of play.

It's 55-32 early in the fourth ...

Miramonte has a good recent record too when talking about competitive equity.

2016-Open State Finals
2015-Open Norcal finals
2014-Open Norcal Finals

One could argue with all of their recent success, they should be moved up to Division I next year too. Especially with all of the local talented Orinda (cough cough) freshman class coming to Miramonte next year. Things are looking good for the Mats.

I don't think there's any doubt we'll wind up D1 next year ... or Open. Remember, the top 24 teams in Northern California, roughly, will be Open or D1 regardless of enrollment.

Which means ESCP is right there too, among others used to playing in lower divisions.

Very well put.

Don't hate. If you can lure outside talent within the rules there is no issue or problem.

Eastside is good team because Blythe is at the school....if he leaves the team will be a regular D5 school....

Imagine how PINEWOOD feels?

They are a D5 school that whoops ESP EVERYTIME they play...but PW gets moved to the OPEN and ESP keeps getting put back in D5 to win state titles.

I'll believe comp equity when/if it happens when I see it....until then I'm going by and figuring status quo...
which means another year for ESP in D5 and another easy state title...The CCS should at a minimum move ESP up to D3....after all the better d4 programs have all been moved up (Brookside, CN, Salesian, SMB).... Honestly with what the NCS and SJS are now doing its completely watered down D4 and D5.

and I'm not forgetting about SJoes in NCS d4....its just I wouldn't put them into the category of those other teams yet. BUT if they win the NCS D4 this coming year that qualifies them for a bump to D3 also.
Sooooooooo then we are right back to a watered down D4 and D5 norcal divisions...

I agree with Jaymel...CIF is zooing up this whole state final thing.

I confirmed with CIF that teams will be placed in NorCals by level of play and not enrollment. ESCP will not be D5 next year, or for the foreseeable future -- nor should they be.

Newman goes D3 next year, I think, in NCS to join Campo, Salesian and St. Mary's of Berkeley. O'Dowd moves up to D2. (A team will stay in a division three years before being eligible to being bumped up again.)

A state championship is a state championship. By using your reasoninig, the ONLY title that matters in boxing is the Heavyweight belt. Does and NCAA Division II or III championship not count just because they're not playing for a Division I championship? I don't think so...

I'd rather my kid have a great experience winning a meaningless state championship than being at home watching. An open champ should and will be the ulitmate prize, but don't discount all the hard work the other kids and coaches put in during the season.

Norcal_Fan has it right. The best high school girls' team loses to a good boys' JV team. That JV team gets crushed by most boys' varsities. The best boys' teams gets drilled by a mediocre D1 college team, and the best college team in the country would get hammered by the Brooklyn Nets.

But what a team can do is play the game well, regardless of talent level, and that's what the state championships will reward -- teams that play the game of basketball well, and come the closest to realizing their potential.
