Here we go, the big boys…

Riordan of SF is 20-8, and the early season where they had a good number of the losses can be (sort of) disregarded…. They were adjusting to the relatively late transfer our of two top players….

They have it going now…. Beat Mitty by 16 the other night to get here.

DLS has been, well…. DLS. Making a steady run thru their league, tough non-league slate. They are 22-5

Winner here gets to go to Moraga to take on the Tough Kids from the Back Alleys of Moraga, aka Campo.

Speaking of Campo, the Cougs slipped past DLS last week to earn the bye.

5 minutes to game time…

This Riordan team faces similar challenges that the state title team was dealt. And it just may be the ultimate reason they end up playing in Sacramento. But this team picked the best time ever to play hot, this is now the 7th win in a row.

The state title team had to come off a 4th game against a cross town rival, which was a loss in the ccs title game. Which evened the series at 2-2 for the year. Riordan was no doubt better than many teams, but they had to hit the road due to the setup at that time.

Enterprise, a unreal environment and 3.5 hour each way road trip. Total home court advantage, Riordan won. Today at one of the most legendary schools and tough place to play they won.

Foothill Sacramento was next. Another long ride, Riordan pulled it out in a another tough place to play. Saturday this team has Campo, its gonna be a rocking and crazy crowd.

If they win it gets better. Riordan had to go to UC Davis and play a 5th and deciding game in the Nor Cal title at UC Davis, they won. This team will have a long trip to either Modesto or Clovis.

One thing the state title team had, they went on a mission. Their city rival caused them long trips, so they had a chip on their shoulder. This team has two chips. One, the year Covid crushed the dream and two, I said it before, they got screwed on this seeding, no way they should have been at DLS tonight.

However the WCAL has a long standing reputation. It’s always a tough season. And in this case they have been given extra motivation and hitting the road from here on out may prove to be the best thing that happened to a team with a kid balling out and a coaching staff that probably isn’t to thrilled with the hand they were dealt thanks to Covid and a seeding that they deserved better.

WCAL all the way in my book. And to me this team picked a great time to shine and it would not shock me if they are playing in Sac for a state title.

I was at that Enterprise game. Riordan had a really good team.
Marcus Katley, John Tofi, Etc.
Brody Angley was only a freshman that game for Enterprise, and he gave them fits. Some good memories.

Here's wishing you great hoops.

Actually I believe he was a sophomore. I could be wrong. Ironically I live in a little East Bay town called El Sobrante, and one of my bar friends a few years later told me my brother in law is a legend in Redding, his name is Brody. I got to chat with Brody and share how tough of a road trip that was and how he was possibly the toughest guard Kately and Tofi faced. Brody runs a nice little basketball camp up there.

You could be right about Brody being a Sophmore. Glad you got to know the kid, they don't come better.
I remember he went 15 for 15 at the foul line. He got katley to foul out at the end of the game. And your right about Enterprise being a tough place to play.

Do you remember when they hit the first shot which was a 3 if I recall by Brody, and the student section threw about 200 bouncy balls on the court. We were like WTF. It was nuts. Their was a 1/2 section of riordan fans behind the bench. The rest was the city of Redding.

I remember that very well. You guys must have been going what have we gotten into. I traveled 2 hrs. for that game. Good memories, thanks.

So Saturday is all set with “the Tough Kids from the Back Alleys of Moraga, aka Campo,” taking on the Boyz from the Streets of San Francisco, aka Riordan. Should be a good one!

It was a great atmosphere at DLS this evening. I was impressed by how well Riordan fans traveled over the Bay Bridge to get there in time for a 6pm start. Wonder if Campo will try any gimmick defenses vs Sanni and try to make someone else beat them. As J24 stated many teams have tried and failed this year.

That’s what St. Francis, Bellarmine, SHP, Mitty and DeLa had in mind. Lol
Yes, agreed. But Campo has a strong backcourt, a deep team that plays well together. And everyone on that team seems to be able to hit an open jump shot from anywhere on the court. Only saw them play twice, but that's the impression they gave me.AR is gonna need some other guys to help with the scoring. I do like Riordan and their great basketball tradition. I don't think they get enough credit for how good that program has been over the years.

Very impressive win by the kids from phelan avenue. I was at the norcal game sitting next to Rick Majerus who was recruiting Kately at that time. What a character. Rip big fella.
Good luck at campo. I’m sure you guys will play well and it’s all about being hot at the right time as you said.

Rick was at a few practices and definitely was a character. The best guy I ever sat next to as I became friends with the father back in those days, is when Roy Williams recruited Andrew(not Drew at the time) Gooden and was at a game at El Cerrito. He already had him committed. Drew’s dad said at half time so hey Coach how is he looking so far. Coach rattled off every stat off the top of his head. I miss the days when we would go to these games and see college coaches have to put in serious work to land kids. Roy literally went back to the airport that night cause he said he had a 6am practice to get to.

WCAL observer here, tied to Saint Francis. SFHS played Riordan 3 times this year. Two extremely close losses (tied in final minute) and one double digit loss. All 3 times, KJW scored in bunches as usual, but multiple other players absolutely had key and timely scoring contributions, in double digits. Also, the role players that contributed scoring against SFHS were not necessarily the same ones that contributed more scoring vs other WCAL teams. Impression from watching Riordan across multiple games was that they have landed on and bought into identity of a team with a single star first option, with everyone else grinding hard and not really actively looking to score, but stepping up when the opportunity presents itself.

That said, SFHS has some good individual defenders but has not been consistently good on team defense in general, so feel free to take the above for what it’s worth. Campo is obviously a great team on both ends of the floor plus excellent coaching, experience playing together at high levels, and a different style of play from Riordan. Should be fun to watch.

Stopping Wilhite as A #1 priority began with the first game at the NorCal Tip-off where Grant double-teamed and often trapped #3. The Crusaders really struggled that game as they had 4 new starters. This team goes 11 deep and player combinations and rotations are often changed each game depending on the type of team the Crusaders play. Agree with Penguin, Wilhite may come away with the most points, but do not sell the Riordan players short as their overall team D and key contributions from a different player every game has really stepped up. Wilhite's game is slowing down allowing him to not force anything and also get his teammates involved. Coach Curtin, his staff and the team have done a terrific job.
