Now that we are 18 days from this big game, does anyone have scouting report on what STA brings to the table this year?

I would say DLS will have the ability to throw more than they have had in the past. They will need it to be able to win State again.

The STA Raiders play in Class 7A and had 132 players on their roster last year. Aquinas lost in the state finals last season and has won five straight regional titles, including three straight state championships from 2014-16. Last season the Raiders had 24 players who signed National Letters of Intent to play football at the next level.

Record last season: 13-2 (lost to Central Miami early in season and 7A state champ Lakeland)

Preseason Ranking: National rank Maxpreps: #10 (behind #9 Central Miami and #5 IMG Academy)

They have a QB competition for starter with three seniors graduating last season (two signed -one with harvard and another Northern Illinois). Line has 31 players over 250lbs with 10 over 300lbs and another 7 over 280lbs. Their line is bigger than many college teams. Just huge. Roster has about 138 on Maxpreps.

Question will be QB reload and RBs are good with one small shifty quick kid and a couple other college recruits. With the line, they are going to be tough. WRs are good pass catchers, disciplined and good un blockers with one elite recruit and top National player at WR. All the top 3 QBs look pretty good (2 or 3 could be eventual college players) but the 2 QB transfers will need to build chemistry. They all can pass and having one of the top players in Florida at WR is a plus. Their defensive front is scary. Line probably a matchup with IMG but not the skill players. Going to be a tough game and a few of their players will be playing in the NFL. They have National recruits on both sides of the ball.

Seniors (Class of 2020)
Marcus Rosemy, 6-2, 195 WR Georgia commit., elite recruit
Marcus Dumervil, OT, 6-5, 305 offers from LSU, Oklahoma, Alabama and others, elite recruit
Derek Wingo, 6-2, 210, OLB, Florida commit. elite recruit
Jahvante Royal, 6-3, 185, Safety, Pittsburg commit
Marlon Martinez, 6-4 1/2, 305, OT, LSU commit
Griffin Lampton 6-4, 231, WDE, Vanderbilt commit
Jahmari Sylvester, 6-4, 298, OG, Florida International commit
Jaedon Henry, RB, 5-10, 194, offers Pittsburg, Missouri, Brown, Kansas and others
Brian Brewton, 5-9, 170, RB, very quick
Travis Dixon, 5-10, 190, 4.63, 40, RB/LB, senior transfer from South Broward HS. Strong and tough to tackle. Good pass catcher.
Devon Betty, OLB, 6-2, 220, looks very good on blitz.
Dontae Lunan, MLB/OLB, 5-11, 200, undersized but quick and good trackler
The’Andris Freeman, WR, 6-0, 175, good hands. Not super quick but gets open and strong blocker on corner when they run to his side.
Keion Smith, DB, 5-11, 170, transfer from Dillard HS. Sound corner. Good tackler
Bobby Washington, DL, 5-10, 283, run stuffer in the middle. Strong bull rusher. A mini Refrigerator Perry. Transfer from Deerfield Beach HS

Juniors (Class of 2021)
Tyreak Sapp, 6-2, 252, SDE, Florida commit, one of the top Florida recruits and Warren Sapp's nephew
Tyson Russell, 5-10, 160, CB, several offers Pittsburgh, Missouri and others
Boaz Saint-Vil. 6-2, 341, DT, offers Auburn, Florida State, GA and others

Quarterbacks - Candidates

STARTER: Zion Turner, Soph (2022), 6-1, 190. throws right. Mobile dual threat. Nice pass. Could play RB as well. Throws are accurate.

Mason Polivka, Jr, 6-1, 170, lefty and throws accurate darts (tight spiral) and mobile (dual threat). Earned spot on Elite 11 regional.

Brady Dean, (2021) 6-4, 205, QB, throws left. son of U of Florida QB star and coach Terry dean transferred from Florida Baptist Academy.Strong in camps. .Lanky and throws well when rolling out. Relatively mobile but more drop back prototype. Good accuracy on intermediate passes and touch and gets ball accurately on slants but has funky release and looks like he notices pass rush but accurate when pressured. Threw on back foot but strong arm got it to WRs. He could be susceptable to pass rush but young and had a summer to get better. Will be a college QB.

Dylan McNamara, Soph (2022) right handed release, 6-2,185, throws deep well and accurate.Transfer from Community School of Naples FL. Elite camps and looks like a D1 QB prospect. Nice release and tight spin.

Others:

Michael Neal, Sr (2020) QB, 6-0, 190, accurate pass and decent down field. Looks mobile. Good high school QB.

Mathew O'Dowd, Jr (2021), 6-2, 170, good high school QB. Accurate but probably not starter.

Jaden Gold, Jr (2021) P, QB , good punter 45-50 yards with direction

Reported in April 2019 St. Thomas Aquinas football team is facing multiple sanctions from the Florida High School Athletic Association after the FHSAA found that a Raiders assistant coach had committed recruiting violations. Not sure about the status of the violation.

DLS o-line is in for a long night in this one. DLS defense may be able to contain their offense but they also might get worn out with the size of the Aquinas line and their QBs if they have time can throw the ball and the Spartans will need to play honest.

Looks like Aquinas will be able to get in a scrimmage or game in before the Spartan's game. Since the Spartan's are starting the season early, will they get a scrimmage at least? Seems the Florida team will have more contact time to prepare than the Spartan's. Not sure if Florida teams are limited in their contact like CA teams.during their practice week. Aquinas can start contact on Aug 3. Just seems a tough game without a week and more extra contact to be ready. These Florida elite programs (e.g., IMG which is at the most extreme) and the top Socal teams (Mater Dei and St John Bosco) also seem to have lots of transfers which is another issue.

Florida Football Calendar
First allowable practice date - non contact (Week 5) July 29; First allowable practice date - contact (Week 5) Aug 3; Preseason classic games (Week 7) Aug 14-17; and First regular season playing date & team roster due (Week 8) Aug 21

Great scouting report NorCal S-F!!
You’re posts are one of the reasons why I frequent this forum/site.
Plan to print your post and carry it with me to the game.

1 question:
With a Line that big is STA flying into OAK on a regular commercial flight or will they fly into McClelland Air Base in a C-17 Globemaster military cargo plane to get all the wide bodies to the West Coast ?

LOL....but McClellan Air Base has been closed for years....coming to Travis via C5 Galaxy!.

(So?!) anything to help with the outcome of the game.

......but my bad, still living in yesteryear.
All my Ford trucks are ‘87-92, constantly searching Craig’s List for those models in the outlands from retiring old guys who can no longer pump the clutch but still pamper their low mileage pups.

Today's player cannot drive a clutch....

Thanks. I was at the DLS Folsom game and heard you were at the game from others on here. I am planning on attending the same. Will let you know. There were quite a few at the DLS Folsom game from this board and we met before the game at a pizza joint. Maybe a good plan for this game.

As far as your question - I think your second option is probably what it will take to get those big kids to the game. LOL

I met Mr Concrete17 at the DLS/Central Catholic game last year. It was awesome meeting him in person!

Ditto Pan-cat....
The honor was all mine. See you again this year.

Mrs Concrete’s fellow teacher is a STA alum her boys play soccer and baseball for DLS. Will be interesting to see which colors she wears to the game. They always sit with us while we are working.
Tick tick tick tock almost time....

That's right now I remember. I have an old Y2K Triton TR19 I keep stored at Whiskey Slough on the Delta. We may have to get out there and jerk some lips someday!

I may have missed the post, but is the STA-DLS game being televised or streamed?

St. Thomas Aquinas names Zion Turner as its starting QB https://usatodayhss.com/2019/st-thomas-aquinas-names-zion-turner-starting-qb

My earlier thoughts on tape I looked at:

Zion Turner, Soph (2022), 6-1, 190. throws right. Mobile dual threat. Nice pass. Could play RB as well. Throws are accurate.

Looks like his dual threat capabilities won out and he is accurate. Big game for a soph QB to travel to CA against famed DLS.

http://www.hudl.com/profile/11357178/Zion-Turner
I'm 100% sure Mr. Turner will be ready for DLS on Friday night. Florida kids stay ready just as Cali kids stay ready. Both states have kids that live and breath football on a daily basis They also live to beat the breaks off each other for the rights to claim which state is the best in football. Should be a fun and exciting game. Can't wait!!!

Anyone know how to get tickets?

Or if they will be selling some day of event?
I posted a link above to buy tickets online (it is on DLS athletic site on the schools web site). I used it for the DLS Folsom game last year and you can use your mobile phone with the app to check in bu just showing them. Or you can go to the campus and buy one. I haven't bought mine yet but will probably tomorrow. I will probably go to one of the pre-game hang outs and get their early to get a seat. It will probably be jam packed for this one.

For neophytes at Owen Owens field:

The entry (west) EZ track area is typically SRO and several deep for an OOS contest. Not a good view. Go early and hob knob with some has beens. Leave for the PPs (see below,) your spot is gone.

The home stands are super close, a great view and you get to hear coaches...and loud moms. Not reserved but if you’re not wearing green, you’ll get some stares. Be there at 4.

The visitor stands, five rows worth, sit low. Find a top row spot and stay standing. That’s a pretty good way of seeing action. ESPN only subsidizes a finite number of STA plane seats...there are spots, go early.

I always liked the the NE EZ area between visitor stands and the E EZ student section. Even though SRO, it’s the furthest away from the entry area, thus, sparse. It cannot be accessed from the home side as the adult hall monitors there are VERY possessive of their duties keeping some type separation of the two sides, you know, Christians versus predatory mammals!

Be sure to visit the cafeteria at half-time to get the last of the now-stale chips & cheez whizzed nachos. dLS adds a few bucks to ticket prices for an OOS opponent. Even though it’s early, they don’t bring out last hoops seasons’ dusty remainder whiz bags to squeeze into the crock pot; new delivery batch ONLY for their guests who’ve travelled across the country.

Take note the porta potties will be located to your left as you enter, and making your way to the “other side.” Or on your right as you make your way out of OO. The nacho porta potty connection is tight. The dela faithful are keen to it, and thus, they cruise out the gate, past the nachos to the campus facilities. (That one’s for you Crete!)

Me? The DVR shows if he really did have the ball crossing into the promised land.

Super nice of you to post tips for the game tomorrow, 1315. I'm going to the game with a DLS player dad, so I figure he will take care of me in regard to protocol. It's been a long time since I'm this excited to go to a high school game, even though HS is still and always will be my favorite level of football.

Good eBaller take 1315....Here's some Concreto fine tunings.

1) If you're gonna eat, get your vital vittles before the half so that either the dog or turf sandwiches are as fresh as possible, otherwise they will chill & congeal in the portable warming cabinets.
Cheese nachos, c'mon, I won't get them anywhere ....Yankee Stadium, the Olympics even the Papal City if they insist on using 40 weight Cheeze Whizzy for the topping.

Bathrooms ( if I received 50 centavos for every bathroom direction I gave while working the games I would've easily recouped my total investment I made for my son's HS and College Ed) The real bathrooms are opposite the swimming pool to your left as you enter double O Field....heated, lighted and definitely late 20th Century. The Porta Potties are for you guys too proud to ask directions, obnoxious OOS visitors and construction hombres who just can't break an old habit.

If you get there early the sun is brutal on the home seating side (as can be the Mom's ...but nowhere comparable to the parental piranhas found at MV games) The visitors' side is some what cooler (relative to Contra Costa) being partially shaded. You can always buy a program which doubles as a fan or makeshift ball cap when it's sweltering and an insulated keister warmer when it's cold, late season.

Parking sucks by an hour before kick off,Uber in after that.

Enjoy the game. It's just HS football and my mortgage and PG & E payments will remain the same regardless of the outcome.......... but I'd be remiss.......
Go Spartans

for me the challenge will be to appear I'm rooting for DLS. Rooting against them in front of my friend would be downright rude, but rooting against them is part of my Grizzly DNA. I'm hoping my forest green Cal Poly shirt along with my arctic camo CP cap will help me blend in with the Spartan faithful

Have to agree those ‘stangers have naso-trumpian-tans. Took care of that, both sports.

Parking down the street at the strip mall about 1/4 mile is a short walk. That's usually where I like to park since it is easy to get and out.

Bring hat and sun screen if you come early. Sun and heat can be intense this time of year and on the home side you look directly into the sun before it sets. Got fried last year at Folsom game. They usually have hats at the bookstore.

Observer22 It's a Florida paper the South Florida Sun Sentinel

Thanks. I didn’t see a prediction in that article, but may have missed it. It sounds like they’re showing DLS some serious respect with a 4 point spread and their having been rated the team team in the country by at least one publication, but I’m sure they realize what they’re up against traveling to OO. Should be a good one.
