The team that plays the best defense will win. Folsom had a difficult time with St. Mary's running game last week. Elk Grove's run game is superior to St. Mary's (I have no idea what the stats are, nor do I really care. I've seen both Elk Grove (two weeks ago) and St. Mary's (last week) play live and the OL and RB's are better for Elk Grove. St. Mary's is good, make no mistake about it. Elk Grove is better, is the only point). With that said, when they had to, Folsom's defense got the stops they needed at the end of the game and got the job done.
Elk Grove's defense is good, no doubt about it. They have faced spread teams and done well. Merced is a spread team and Elk Grove won in dominating fashion in the second round of the playoffs. However, as we all know, Merced is not Folsom. The thing that would worry me regarding Elk Grove's defense is if they put in a "new defense" to try and stop Folsom, as they did a few years ago when these two teams met in the section finals for DII. Elk Grove needs to stick to their hard-hitting, aggressive, attack-style defense if they are going to win...that is the defense that they have created and excelled with and it would be incredibly difficult for the Elk Grove boys to perform in a defense that dropped 8 defenders into zone coverage every down.
This should be a great high school football game. Both offenses will be able to score points, in my opinion. The saying, "defense wins championships" always applies, but it is especially applicable in this game.
