February 21 Scoreboard

SJS D1: McClatchy tips past Lincoln-Stockton 68-66, in a nail-biter thriller game. HOWEVER, the referees were terribible in the last minute of the game. McClatchy fans went on the court twice in the 4th quarter, but the refs never called a technical foul on the McClatchy crowd. With McClatchy's Tamaria Rumpf go ahead layup with six seconds left in the game, McClatchy fans both adults and students were on the court celebrating, interfering with the last play and attempt by Lincoln. A Lincoln player had to dribble around many fans on the court. The referees blew it and did not call a technical foul on the crowd. There were also a couple very questionable fouls in the last two minutes going against Lincoln too. It was a great close game, but a bad way to end.

Lincoln still should end up advancing to the NorCal playoffs as the "at-large" selection, being the highest MaxPreps ranked team in the SJS to lose in the quarterfinals. They are ranked #8 in the SJS.

It is too bad the game ended that way. Crowd control can be an issue especially at smaller gyms.

Did Rumph play at Franklin earlier this season?

I really don't know. I noticed her name on the McClatchy roster starting when league play started--same time when Mary Carter of Antelope was eligible. Rumpf is a game changer. She breaks through any defense you throw at her and penetrates into the key. Outstanding dribbling skills. Her shots can be a little wild though. Rumpf played her freshman season at McClatchy. But when Covid-19 started, never knew where she went. She's only a junior.

Antelope beat Christian Brothers 56-36. Will take on Vista del Lago in the semis.

Wow…it looked to me like everyone in the gym heard the horn sound (shot clock) and mistook it for the game clock and presumed the game was over. That’s game awareness and something officials should be prepared for. It almost seemed like the ref from under the basket was heading towards the locker room rather than focusing on the game as the final seconds ticked down. At a minimum, time should have been put back on the clock and the team granted the ball out of bounds for the last 6 seconds.

I don’t know the rules so I’d love to hear how that was pulled off.

Also that is a technical for fans on the court. I don’t care what the score or scenario was. She had to maneuver through 3 or 4 different fans. Game probably ends with a Ckm win regardless but that is absolutely ridiculous.

The playoffs need 3 officials period. no reason to not have it.

It is not an automatic technical foul for fans coming onto the court. The rulebook does give the Referee the permission to penalize a team with a technical foul when its supporters act in such a way as to interfere with the administration of the game, but it is a judgment call for the official to make. The guidance is that a technical foul should be used with great caution. In this situation, the official had 3 choices: 1) determine that the situation did not interfere with the administration of the game and do nothing, 2) stop play and ask game management to remove spectators from the court prior to resuming play, or 3) stop play and issue a technical foul for fans interfering with the game. Having only seen this one clip I don't have knowledge of the factors throughout the rest of this contest that would inform my decision-making. Unless the team had previously been warned for unruly fan behavior, I probably would go with option 2 here and simply stop play and resume with the inbound and time back on the clock after the made basket.

And I wholeheartedly agree, section playoffs need 3 officials (where all 3 are trained in working 3-person high school mechanics...). If we had enough officials to support it, I would be in favor of 3 officials for all varsity contests throughout the season.

I was at the game. During a timeout with under 3 minutes remaining, one of the referees called the McClatchy Athletic Director to the floor and had him sit administrators in the area where fans were previously coming onto the court. Not sure if that constitutes an official warning but obviously the refs were concerned about it.

Another view from the other side of the court. Not a good way to end the game, but both teams put on a great show. Exactly what a 4th seed vs. 5th seed game should come down to--an exciting, competitive game.

Wow, that ref that was visible wasn’t even looking at the situation. He seemed to be running off the floor, possibly also thinking the game had ended. Had that last girl been fouled on her last second shot (or knocked over by a spectator), he was in no position to even see it. And yes, it certainly appeared to be a charge with 6 seconds left.

Every coach should show their team the clip of Jason Kidd running into the opposing head coach (who was on the court) on purpose to get a call.

If instead of dribbling around the spectators on the court, if the player simply crashed into one -- the refs have no choice but to call something. Especially if it had happened earlier.

The fans and coaches should remain OFF the court during play, *always*.

Sincerely, Coach Rapp, Serra HS. :)

Anyway, yeah, I'd say that was a charge before the shot... but that was very close, could have gone either (or neither) way.

Also, as said above, the Lincoln dribbler should have drawn that fan-interference call by running into the closest fan... But who other than Jason Kidd would ever think of that kind of thing immediately?
