After watching some game film on Fortuna, how does Newman's front line stack up against Fortuna's ground and pound offense?

Hudl or maxpreps? That's pretty much where I been digging up these teams films or snippets of it

Fortuna's had a great year. I really have to believe it ends very abruptly at Newman by a lopsided score.

I'm still sticking with Newman vs Marin Catholic in the finals. I really don't think Fortuna will have answers for a talent like Brookshire. His speed will be hard for them to overcome. It does sound like Moreau could present some serious problems with there speed so that might be an interesting game. Looks like weather is going to be dry but brutally cold for this weekend around the north bay. Santa Rosa could see some high 30's by halftime so dress warm.

what about other D4 semi, who is the real MC???

I think Moreau is going to give MC fits with their speed on offense, but MC I think is a bit more physical than Moreau even though Moreau carries like 4 or 5 guys near 300 pounds.........Issom is going to get his they just need to make sure they contain him and don't allow him to break off long TD runs but make them nickel and dime their way down field

MC415- I agree but I think MC is just too seasoned and well coached to lose to Moreau. I could be wrong. I'm going a high score.
49-35 Marin Catholic.

Newman 49
Fortuna 14
Newman has been super stingy on D lately. Only giving up about 7 pts a game the last 6.

I studied the Fortuna / Orland game being Fortuna has given Orland their only loss. In that game it was Veer vs Veer. Fortuna has a huge middle backer that they like to Flex over the center. Fortuna is formidable. If you do not know how to stop the veer correctly it can kill you regardless of how many points you have given up. I am guessing with all the shotgun spread the teams use the veer could give teams fits!!! I have not seen CN play since the playoffs last year vs Novato so I have no comment on them

I wasn't aware Justin ran the veer. I wasn't aware anybody ran into anymore with exception of DLS. Ha ha….
Not taking anything away from Fortuna because it sounds like they are for real , but they have the cards stacked against them. Long 3.5 hour drive to start things. Newman has been really clicking. Doing it with other guys like Ortola running the ball in addition to Brookshire hurting you from multiple avenues. Its HS football so stranger things have happened.

Actually, everyone runs it. It just looks different out of the pistol. But you're right, not many run it like they used to.

Slick- Good point. Its disguised.
NBGURU- I will probably go to Oak Ridge Vs Elk Grove. I will hit up Newman and MC (which one…) at the finals. Do you know where it would be played? Don't say a day game in kentfield.

My guess would be at the Ranch (nice facility) as first choice or Santa Rosa High as second.

not sure Marin can score 49 on Moreau, the most they have given up was 34 to a super motivated StMarys last week but average allowing about 7 a game, and yes Ison will get his which means some big plays. I think Marin traditionally struggles with athletic fast teams--Encinal,El cerritto in past few years. I am taking MC(moreau) in upset 42-21.

I don't think MC loses by 3 tds, but if they do lose I see 35-28 score and MC also beat those athletic teams for NCS titles too in the past.......on the flip side MC hasn't given up more than 20 points in a game this year and Moreau did lose to American high school team and gave up 27 to them......Moreau hasn't seen a complete team like MC all year.......but MC might get shell shocked by Issom should be a good one

If I'm not mistaken...doesn't Justin-siena run the veer also?

how much of an advantage to CN does the fact they just played a veer team last week represent?
IMO Justin is a better team than Fortuna. CN will have their way with them unless they are looking ahead to the finals vs MC.

The one thing I've noticed about CN is that the coaching staff ALWAYS has the team ready to play. Also MC for that matter. I'll be there to watch MC vs MC, should be a great game at the very least. MC-42 MC - 35!!

River boat gambler with that bold prediction!

Congratulations to Cardinal Newman for earning this year's Elmer Brown award in the NCS for athletic and academic achievement. They were the top school of the 176 NCS member schools, and the first recipient of the award in Sonoma County.

Pretty sweet award. Champs in the class and on the field. Great school.
Should be a perfect night for football. Cold temps throughout NorCal. No rain. Good luck to both teams. Not many kids are still playing.

Not streaming that I can find. Not sure about radio. I'll be at the game and will try to post updates, but last week my 3g was working so slowly there, I gave up. Putting on ski clothing now as it's already 42* and dropping.

43-42 Cardinal Newman with the winning score coming with 1:59 remaining.

Newman was down by 14 in the 4th Qtr at about the 6 minute mark.

Got to say... I thought it was over for Newman.

Just got back from the game. Let me say first, Fortuna is a very good football team. They're big and physical and came to play. They were not intimidated. Both defenses had trouble getting stops. CN hurt themselves badly with 2 early turnovers, one a pick returned to the one yard line, and then converted for the score. Changed all momentum. The other a fumble by wr after a big 3rd down conversion catch. CN didn't give up and kept themselves in the game. Fortuna was very well prepared, their OC was a great play caller, mixing it up a lot, double wing one play, veer the next, very timely passes...kept CN defense on their heels. Lots of big hits in this game from both teams. Fortuna RB's big and physical, tough to bring down before they gained 5 yards. I have to admit I was very surprised at the game they brought to Santa Rosa. CN down most of the game but refused to give up; became more physical, got some stops, and their offense put it in the endzone. Best call by Coach Cronin... When Newman scored to get to 42-34, Cronin called for 2 point conversion, caught Fortuna off guard, and converted it to bring score to 42-36, with 5 min left. Thought onside kick was coming but CN kicked deep. Defense came alive, got a sack, forcing Fortuna to throw, and the CN defense finally held. CN scored the go ahead TD with about 2 min remaining, got the PAT to make it 43-42. Fortuna got last chance with 2 min and 2 timeouts but CN defense was fired up. Wallace makes a pick to put it away. Great game and hats off to Fortuna. Congrats to CN for staying with it and making a Championship-style comeback in 4th. Crowd was going nuts. Off to the Finals next week for CN. This was a good preparation game for Newman for next week.

Damn heard it was a good game, had been planing on going, I missed out. Cardinal Newman vs. Moreau / MC winner next Saturday 7pm at the Ranch!

I was at the game and still don't know how CN pulled it out. Fortuna came ready to play and both teams were knocking the sh** out of each other. Fortuna was well prepared and played great. CN did not get a stop until that last fortuna drive when CN made them punt for the 1st time with about 3mins to go in the game. A key play that will go overlooked. When Fortuna scored to take the 14 pt lead mid 4th. Fortuna called for taunting penalty and had to kick off back 15 yds. Wallace returned to Fortuna side of field and CN scored in about 1 min to cut it to 6 (after the 2 pt). That allowed CN to FINALLY stop Fortuna and have enough time for the final TD drive.

MAJOR MAJOR PROPS TO FORTUNA..... you NEVER heard any bitching, complaining or gripes about having to play CN. They buckled up their chinstraps and came ready to play!!! Their kids, coaching staff and school have a lot to be proud of. They were an undefeated league champion and played like one!!!

Unbelievable game....

I had warned you all earlier about Fortuna. I would be lying if I said I was not pulling for them. That loss will sting for a while because in a 1 point game there is always a lot of shoulda, coulda, woulda!!! Congrats to CN for hanging in there.

That is extremely impressive. I love how a small school like Fortuna came down and nearly pulled off one of the bigger all time upsets. Like NBGuru said… No complaining, whining, excuses. Just really good football. Congrats on your season guys! Newman is a very good football team. Think of this… St Mary's of Stockton was an inch away from losing to Newman earlier in the year. A big power D1 program that lost to Folsom last night by a TD and was up most of the game. As everyone knows, Folsom is one of the top ranked teams in the state.

Don't get caught up in smaller vs bigger schools. Sometimes teams are just damn good. Fortuna went toe to toe with a great program.

You were right on in your assessment, if not a little understated. This Fortuna team changed my perception of the teams from the North. They could beat many teams in NCS down here and in East Bay. CN knows about the 1-point loss pain, having that experience with St. Mary's this year. Last night's game was one of those where it's a shame someone had to lose. Fans from both sides certainly got their $10 worth.

Fortuna's enrollment is over 200 students more than Cardinal Newman's... wouldn't call this small school vs big school.

I got Newman playing MC for the championship and I'm sticking to it. (hmmm…. which MC) Not looking ahead… Yes I am. If Newman wins the NCS champ what is the next stage? Is it the norcal bowl selection?

Sounded like a great game. I saw Fortuna vs Eureka online and thought Newman would handle them. Boy was I wrong. Sounds like Fortuna brought it to Newman. Newman historically is a school that you can't ever let hang around. If it's close late they very well can beat you. Lesson learned for Fortuna and nice season. 12-1 with Newman on the brink is a nice run.
