St. Francis/Peninsula Elite 2019 post Mia Grizelji has committed to St. Mary's.

A commitment to attend a college and, perhaps, play a sport there is one thing. Signing a scholarship agreement is quite another. The second circumstance is actually a commitment made by the school in addition to the student-athlete.

From what I know, it is a scholarship. Why else would she commit this early? I know she had 4 D1 visits set up and canceled them all for St. Mary's. She had a great July as I saw her play my daughter plays the Adidas circuit. She was beating other 4's and 5's down the court, hitting 3's, finishing at the basket, and defending 4's and 5's well and some on the wing. This girl is still 16. Lots of upside. Coach Thomas is a smart man, I wouldn't bet against him.

sounds good.. when I saw her in June she wasn't beating anyone down the court, and she did not look like a D1 player. She was playing with SF summer team though, and not her AAU team. Good for her

"hate" seems kind of strong. but often "observations" offered on this board say as much about the observer as about the observed.

Hate? Yes because that’s what this board loves to do. Congratulations Mia! Good fit and she is a D1 player from my observation.

absolutely no hate at all. and if I have to explain then I will...

I saw her on a couple weekends in June (as I said) and that was my observation. Her team (Saint Francis) got smashed by C-Let like 55-15.. no one on the SF team looked great. Obviously she is a D1 player, just based on size and skillset alone, she was going D1, thats obvious. But my original point made on this thread was just surprise based on SMC's recruiting history and the kids they have on their squad (see McKay, Raggio, Ferguson, etc). Simple observation, not hate, not bad talking.

sorry if my 3rd post on this thread (#8) sounded like hate. "Winning is fun" comes on and makes his/her first post ever about what he/she saw in July, so I posted about what I saw in June (I have also seen her play many times in the WCAL). Do I think one month is going to make a drastic change? No. Am I being too hard with my observations because she was against some other D1 players? Maybe. But maybe the truth is somewhere in the middle. Thats for you to decide, get out and watch some games this year and decide for yourself. And I'll say again, its not hate, its basketball.

For what it's worth, Mia's little sister is an incoming freshman and has the potential to better than her big sister. If she grows into a frame like Mia's there's no doubt she will be an impact player in the WCAL and a college prospect

Well said! If you explained a little to begin with, maybe you wouldn't be accused of hating! :) I think before critiquing players we should probably congratulate them on working their entire lives for getting the scholarship everyone is shooting for. Then, we can add some constructive criticism or questions.

But seriously, you are correct. When I saw her in April, she wasn't doing any of the things I previously stated (running the floor, hitting 3's, etc.). In July, the money month, she turned it on. Got herself prepared and played great at the right time. Like you said she was playing D1 regardless, just a matter of where. The SMC players you stated above, two are seniors. Maybe that's why they are looking for size. Looks like they will have 5 incoming Freshmen next year.

I agree with you about Mia's sister as well. Even if she doesn't grow to be 6 feet she will be a force in the WCAL and a prospect. Watch out for SFHS this year. They have a good Freshman class.

And yes, these are my first posts, but I've been a long time follower, first time blogger! Look for me more often! ;)

No doubt, but we will have to see how they develop. Most aren't varsity ready this year, and some are multi sport athletes with big interest in softball. With basketball season running into the beginning of softball season, you might see some kids having to choose by their sophomore or junior year.
