Geico Boys Side...Imagine if Miami Country Day starters decided not to play!!!

they already won their title... why go play and risk losing that undefeated season... for nothing... they are about to start getting exploited next year anyway

So Africentric did not go to the TOC...not playing in the Geico Nationals....
undefeated....are they the best team in the nation?
Clay what say you?

Africentric is not the best team in the nation -- because the coach wasn't that interested in national rankings, they played some good teams early and then relaxed their way (with overwhelming talent) to a Division III title (smaller schools) in Ohio.

They are very talented, but were not impressive late, beating mediocre teams by not that much, and simply didn't do enough (or try hard enough) to earn a national title.

This is crazy....
so the number two team in the nation 32-0 the starters ...say to the coach we are not interested!!!!!

There is nothing crazy about it. They won their state championship. They owe their school nothing beyond that.

This is a subjective 8 team tournament that honestly means nothing in the grand scheme of things, since you can't have a singular national champion when most states don't have a single champion. It's so irrelevant, that the marketing group running it invited a team that isn't even on the USA Today Top 25 list just to have an 8th team. And it's not just a joke on the boy's side. The 4 girls teams are #1, #2, #4, and #7 in the country. Seems more like a "best of those who want to come" instead of a "best of the best" tournament.

This is just a money grab and if these kids want to honor other commitments and avoid this blatant money grab, I'm all for it.

Actually the four girls teams are 1,2,3,and 5 according to Clay's book....
So the national championship will be decided in NY Friday and Saturday
The one thing is AC which is undefeated but did not go to the TOC and is not playing in this Geico Tournament...
So this is the best of the best....including the Gatorade National POY.... who is a Sophmore...can't wait to see how she does against the best comp in the nation

Actually the tournament is basing team and player rankings purely on ESPN player and team rankings. You can see the game program here: http://geicohoops.com/GEICONationals_GameProgram_FINAL.pdf

As such, it's #1, #2, #4, and #7, based on the rankings being used.

So it's not the best of the best, according to the rankings they're using. And again, with no state having an unquestioned single state champion and no defined national tournament among all of those unquestioned champions, this is a mythical national championship that doesn't mean anything.

One interesting note: California has never been officially approached about allowing its teams to participate, for reasons unclear to me.

So ESPN says it is 1,2,4,and 7 Clays says it is 1,2,3 and 5 either way 3 out of the top 4 teams in the nation...previous year this Geico tournament was not for the National Championship....
This year is different...they finally got it...seems Geico approached DC and Nevada and pressed them to allow some changes...
This a dream situation...most of the US who is interested in HS basketball will be watching...
California is nothing compared to this....
Friday Morning
8AM MCD vs New Hope
10AM St Johns vs Centennial
Clay why don't you break the games down for us?

SMS girls were invited the year they got upset, but CIF has a rule that California teams cannot play after state championships. I believe BOD boys were invited a few years earlier.

This is spot on. CIF has that rule, as do other states. There was speculation about inviting Chino Hills when they had all 3 Ball brothers playing, but there was no way to do it.

While I admire your enthusiasm, this tournament has about as much legitimacy in determining a national champion as the BCS or the current college football playoffs. This isn't a tournament ran by the NFHS or any combination of state athletic associations, rather, it's a tournament owned and operated by Paragon Marketing Group with Geico and several others as sponsors.

Will there be exciting games? Most likely. Will the national champion title awarded to the winner mean anything? Not in the slightest. But the trophy will be nice.

The CIF rule could be changed, but a process must be followed to do so. Paragon/ESPN has never initiated that process.
