Greg Barber, a key assistant football coach at San Mateo High School during a long period of Peninsula dominance, died this past week due to an illness. He was 84. Barber worked closely with the Bearcats' legendary head coach, Buz Williams (201 wins), beginning in the 1960s and lasting for many years. Barber was also a full-time teacher in the San Mateo Union High School District, mainly at San Mateo High. He was an outstanding prep football player at nearby Burlingame High School early in the 1950s. As an adult, his professional career was cut short in 2007 when he suffered a catastrophic medical event that resulted in multiple amputations, leaving him wheelchair-bound. In spite of his disabilities, he did some football coaching on the Peninsula at Gunn High School in Palo Alto and Sequoia High School in Redwood City in his 70's. Funeral services have not been announced.
